CANDIDATE SECTION
Candidate responses on this document must be typed and limited to a maximum of 500 words for the whole of the Candidate
section (not per field). It is not permitted to exceed the two sides of the candidate section.

Describe your real-life situation:

In 1974, Marina Abramovic, performed a 6-hour performance art where she allowed an audience to do whatever they wished to
her, as she stood still. She provided them with 72 objects, such as roses, knives, scissors, perfume and even a gun with a bullet.
She was standing there for 6 hours and was done when the museum closed at 2 am in the morning. People started off by giving
her kisses and roses and ended up cutting her neck with razors, sticking thorns of roses into her body, drinking her blood,
harassing her by taking her clothes off and pointing a gun with one bullet at her asking her to pull the trigger.

State your central knowledge question (this must be expressed as a question):

To what extent do ethical considerations limit the acquisition of knowledge in the arts?

Explain the connection between your real-life situation and your knowledge question:
This RLS allows us to question the ethical considerations associated with the arts, specifically performance arts. In this piece,
Abramovic claimed responsibility for whatever happened to her, which removed any legal considerations, showing true motives of
these humans due to the absence of ethical obligations.

Outline how you intend to develop your TOK presentation in the context of your real-life situation. Include analysis
of your main knowledge question and related knowledge questions as well as arguments and perspectives.
Responses can be presented in continuous prose or as a list of points:
• Presentation of RLS of Rhythm O:
•Perspective One: Ethical Considerations help immensely to gather human knowledge
• What is understood by gathering human knowledge– emotional knowledge.
• This question will be addressed by analysing how art communicates with people and is altered by ethical considerations; – legal
obligations
• Humans tend to present themselves how society wants them to be– miss America; Lil Tay
• Focus on difference, out of the ordinary: What catches the eye of a bypasser?
• Art is shocking, but morally correct?
• Subquestion: Should we judge artists by their work or their ethical positions?
• Subquestion: Is art above the law?
• Ethics as our dominant decisionmaker – the main influence on our actions
• Perspective Two: Ethical considerations are of more importance to famous artists
• Ethics acting as role models – social media
• Reason as a WOK -kids are easily influenced?
• Future Generation – what is best according to society’s needs: Reason as a discipline
• Media is an essential communication skill, affects how young minds are shaped
• Utilitarianism: Greatest result for greatest amount of people (Artists should be role models)
• Often media can wrongly display the truth – bases of reasoning are needed (for art pieces)
• Disallowing artists to be role models limits acquisition of knowledge (Lady Gaga; Meat Dress)
• Conclusion; Ethics in the arts generally allows for the acquisition of (emotional) knowledge , however when being known artists,
due to emotion, ethics limits knowledge to certain extent, led by social media and societal pressure to be a role model.

Show the significance of your conclusions with particular reference to your real-life situation and indicate how those
conclusions might be relevant to other real-life situations:
Our conclusion states that arts generally allows for the acquisition of ( emotional ) knowledge however when artists are well-
known ethics limit knowledge to a certain extend, led by social media and societal pressure to be a role model. This relates back
to our real life-situation because due to Marina Abramovic removing any legal consideration, the theory of the “role model” was
removed allowing people to show their true motives and therefore Marina gaining truthful emotional knowledge. Therefore artists
like Marina gain most knowledge due to how she removed the ethical obligations which could benefit other artists and real-life
situations in order to gain effective acquisition of knowledge in the arts.
