CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS

Introduction

Civil engineers are responsible for looking after the fire control systems and installing

quick fire exit points in the buildings they design. This will help in minimizing the loss of life

during fire accidents. Civil engineering is one of the oldest of the engineering professions. Ancient

feats such as the building of the Egyptian pyramids and Roman road systems are based on civil

engineering principles. In environmental engineering, the civil engineers are concerned with

applications of various methods to purify the contaminated air, water and soil. The polluted system

should be cleaned, the waste extracted and the purified constituent must be sent back to the natural

system. Civil engineers are also responsible for building good quality transportation systems like

highways, airports, rail lines, sea ports, etc. (WebTechTix, 2014).

North West Samar State University is one of universities holding a bachelor course for

civil engineering. In fact, it had a rate of board examiners reaching the average number of passers

of the course in the Philippines. (“Northwest Samar State University - Calbayog City”, 2016).

Though it may seem that this university would be a reliable place to study on, the learning process

in taking this course still considers various aspects before dwelling in to the actual workloads

which were mentioned previously.

An external locus of control state that the students perceive that events, environment or

others dictate the outcome of their learning; an internal locus of control state that the students

perceive that they are in control of their learning outcomes through effort and perseverance,

irrespective of external influences. The self-belief as to whether one’s intelligence is either an

2|Page
innate, fixed and a measurable entity (i.e. entity theorists), or a malleable quantity which can be

changed through work, effort and experience (i.e. incremental theorists). A student’s motivation

arises through a need to gain favorable judgments of their competences. A student is motivated by

situations which provide opportunities for increasing competences. There are much scope that

exists in improving the student experience of higher education through opportunities for

developing favorable attitudes towards the nature of one’s own intellectual ability. Currently, such

attitudinal changes are being evaluated through the implementation of a course entitled Psychology

for Engineers, in which much opportunity is given for the reflection on and reconsideration of

one’s self beliefs of ability (E. ALPAY and J. IRESON, 2005).

Family-oriented problems, underlying financial problems, would be one of the reasons why

such hindrance in learning is present in a student taking this course. If it takes a deep look, there

would be deeper factors relating to the much personal matter of the student which are far from the

common ones.

Civil engineering students could pass through various factors in their lives in order for them

to be reliable enough in the future to excel further in doing different projects that the people will

depend on. Though some are uncertain enough to proceed in this course because of factors that

would affect in specific aspects of their life. Yet there are still some who manage to deal with those

concerning factors.

In having various concerns about how a civil engineering student live in terms of unalike

features, the researchers will conduct a study about the lived-experience of civil engineering

students. This study will provide various data that will be gathered through a phenomenological

approach. It will focus more on the field of civil engineering for it is the most general course to be

taken by upcoming college students.

Theoretical Framework

This study was fortified by the following theories that were taken by the researchers. These

theories are very significant to this study because it focus majorly on cognitive development of

students especially civil engineering students.

According to Rogers’ Experiential Theory, one’s learning is equivalent to personal change

and growth. This theory suggests that all human beings have a natural propensity to learn. This

includes: (1) setting a positive climate for learning, (2) clarifying the purposes of the learner(s),

(3) organizing and making available learning resources, (4) balancing intellectual and emotional

components of learning, and (5) sharing feelings and thoughts with learners but not dominating.

This explains how a learner perceives a particular situation based on his interest. This theory

emphasize that learning is facilitated when: (1) the student participates completely in the learning

process and has control over its nature and direction, (2) it is primarily based upon direct

confrontation with practical, social, personal or research problems, and (3) self-evaluation is the

principal method of assessing progress or success. This theory originates from Roger’s view on

humanistic approach to psychology. It applies mainly on adult learners. This theory also highlights

the importance of learning to learn and an openness to change. This is an accumulation of Roger’s

studies on Freedom to Learn (1969) and Freedom to Learn (3rd Ed.) (1994).

Bruner’s Constructivist Theory has a major theme that includes the learner to construct

new concepts based upon his current/past knowledge. The learner selects and transforms

information, constructs hypotheses, and makes decisions, relying on a cognitive structure to do so.

Cognitive structure (i.e., schema, mental models) provides meaning and organization to

experiences and allows the individual to "go beyond the information given". This theory is based

4|Page
upon the study of cognition. The ideas in Bruner (1960) came from a conference focused mainly

on science and mathematics. This theory will explain on why students interact differently from

different environments and on how they counterfeit problems based on their knowledge.

Algo-Heuristic Theory suggests that all cognitive activities can be analyzed into operations

of an algorithmic, semi-algorithmic, heuristic, or semi-heuristic nature. Once discovered, these

operations and their systems can serve as the basis for instructional strategies and methods. The

theory specifies that students ought to be taught not only knowledge but the algorithms and

heuristics of experts as well. They also have to be taught how to discover algorithms and heuristics

on their own. Special emphasis is placed on teaching students cognitive operations, algorithms and

heuristics which make up general methods of thinking (i.e., intelligence). This theory is illustrated

mainly on the learning of mathematics and foreign language instructions. This will explain on why

students tend to solve complex problems by just teaching them a low-lying principle. This theory

is an accumulation of Landa’s studies which includes; Landamatics ten years later (1993),

Algorithmization in Learning and Instruction (1974) and Instructional Regulation and Control:

Cybernetics, Algorithmization, and Heuristics in Education (1976).

Attribution Theory concerns with how individuals interpret events and how this relates to

their thinking and behavior. This theory simply speaks about the relationship of actions and

knowledge. Before Weiner (1980), Heider (1958) was the first to propose a psychological theory

of attribution, but Weiner and colleagues (e.g., Jones et al, 1972; Weiner, 1974, 1986) developed

a theoretical framework that has become a major research paradigm of social psychology.

Attribution theory assumes that people try to determine why people do what they do, i.e., attribute

causes to behavior. This is closely related to the acts of student. A three-stage process underlies an

attribution: (1) the person must perceive or observe the behavior, (2) then the person must believe

5|Page
that the behavior was intentionally performed, and (3) then the person must determine if they

believe the other person was forced to perform the behavior (in which case the cause is attributed

to the situation) or not (in which case the cause is attributed to the other person).

aaral at guro.

Students sa Northwest Samar State University.
