Connection to our book:
These children left behind their parents and
were forced to experience frightening situations
that led to them prematurely becoming adults
and having to support themselves physically
and emotionally.

Connection: The main character Ani, suffers

lots of loss including separation from her dad
and first best friend, death of her mom, and
overall trauma form explosions and the
massacre around her. She was a Basque
refugee and Spy for the Republican side.
Connection to our movie:
Lots of children also had to completely change
their lifestyles to stay alive during the war. It led
to so much fear just to stay alive.

Connection: There was a close relationship

between a student and a teacher and when the
teacher had to be taken away for being
“republican” the boy and his family cut off all
communication with the teacher and started to
act in a cowardly manner towards him by yelling
rude words when he was being taken to be
executed in order for the child family not being
taken for also being Republican.
Simulation
We will hand out pieces of paper and you will read the text and
decide which out of the 3 options your group wants to choose,
we will go over the decisions and what actually happened after
each question.
Event 1:
The Spanish civil war lasted from 1936 to 1939. Republicans loyal to the left-leaning Second Spanish
Republic, in alliance with the Anarchists and Communists, fought against the Nationalists, an alliance of
Falangists, Monarchists, and Catholics, led by General Francisco. The war caused many problems in
Spain and families were torn apart from the war.It is 1939 and the nationalists are winning the war and
you live in a small town in Spain and your family are republicans. Your family is conflicted on what to do
in because the nationalists are moving into your town and you don’t want to be in danger. Below is a list
of 3 options of what your family can do choose 1 and write why you choose it.

1: Your family can pack up everything that they own and leave during the night to migrate to a new
country such as France, Portugal, or Italy.

2: You can stay In your town and hide out in your home and try to avoid confrontation and not get into
fights with the nationalists.

3: The parents can choose to run away and let the kids fend for themselves. The parents would do this
because it is a better and safer option for them because they don’t have to deal with the kids.
Event 2:
The Spanish civil war lasted from 1936 to 1939. Republicans loyal to the left-leaning Second
Spanish Republic, in alliance with the Anarchists and Communists, fought against the
Nationalists, an alliance of Falangists, Monarchists, and Catholics, led by General Francisco.
The war caused many problems with Spain and families were torn apart from the war. You and
your friend are outside playing soccer in a field near your homes and you see many planes flying
above and your run to hide under a nearby tree then all you hear are loud crashes all around
you!!!!!! Your town is getting bombed by the germans you must decide what to do.

1: You run and hide at the barn that is half a mile away but have the risk of getting killed

2: You go and dive in the ditch that is only five feet away and hope that nothing bad happens.

3:You run back to your homes to be with your families but have the risk of getting killed.
Event 3:
The Spanish civil war lasted from 1936 to 1939. Republicans loyal to the left-leaning Second
Spanish Republic, in alliance with the Anarchists and Communists, fought against the
Nationalists, an alliance of Falangists, Monarchists, and Catholics, led by General Francisco.
The war caused many problems with Spain and families were torn apart from the war. You are
at home with your family one day then you get a knock on your door and it is the nationalists at
the door and they take your family and load them into the bus when you are driving down the
street you see your teacher who is a good friend of yours. Everyone on the bus starts yelling at
all of the republicans and saying mean things. What do you do?

1: yell with them and say rude things back at all of them and make the teacher feel bad

2: you yell back with them then you say a message to the teacher to make him feel good

3: say nothing so you don't get in trouble
