CONTEXT:
The short video from Britain’s Got Talent features a disabled man whose only sole
purpose was to bring joy and happiness to all people. Not all disabled men are capable of doing
this. Most of them who has this kind of condition tends to make themselves feel that they are
useless and that they don’t contribute anything in the society. Luckily for this man, he has a
different perspective about how he viewed his condition. Although he doesn’t have a voice but
still, he was able to reproduce one with the use of technology. This man maximizes his overall
capacity in order for him to feel that in spite of what he have, he is still capable of doing what
other normal people can actually do.

According to some of my researches, Lee Ridley aka as the “Lost Voice Guy”, 37 years
old was diagnosed with a neurological form of cerebral palsy at the age of 6 months. This
condition had caused him to lose his ability to produce his own sound. Some people with this
kind of condition would lose hope on how will they function as a human being. For Mr. Ridley
this was not a problem at all, instead he viewed his condition as a challenge and he was able to
overcome it. Right now with his condition, he’s able to make other people laugh in which even
some normal people are not capable of doing.

EXPERIENCE:
Sometimes we may experience obstacles/problems that would actually stop us from
achieving our dreams in life. We just have to find the right timing and the perfect solution as to
how we can overcome those problems for us to be able to achieve our goals in life. Personally, I
also experienced a lot of problems that almost stopped me from achieving my dreams. One of
them is to how I am going to balance my academics and extracurricular activities. This past few
weeks have been a challenge for me. I have to excuse myself from class in order for me to be
able to attend the different competitions. At the end of two weeks, I find it a bit hard to comply
with the different requirements. I even came to a point wherein I thought of giving up my
extracurricular activities just for me to cope up well with my academics. They say that in every
problem there is a solution. With God’s guidance I was able to find the solution to my simple
problem. Time management helped me to balance my academics and extracurricular activities. In
life, there will really come a point wherein problems would arise and it’s up to us how we are
going to overcome it. God has never given us problems that we can never solve, it is only us
humans that doesn’t want to think of ways as to how we can fix our problems. Having
disabilities doesn’t mean that it would stop us from reaching our dreams, there are a lot of unique
ways that we can do for us to achieve our dreams in life and also to inspire other people.
REFLECTION:
While watching the clip I was really inspired as to how other people with disabilities are
able to live their everyday lives as if they don’t have any. For me, I should be really thankful that
God has given me a well-functioning body. I should be more careful to what I do with my body.
Later in life, some diseases would start to show up. Taking care of our body would help us to
prevent our self from developing the different disorders that may arise as we aged.

Giving joy to other person doesn’t mean that we have to be physically well. Some people
with disabilities just like Mr. Ridley was able to make other people happy. It would be hard to
crack jokes in front of a whole crowd without a voice, but Mr. Ridley’s condition did not stop
him from it instead he used his creative mind to produce a sound of his own so that he can share
his talent that would make other people happy.

Life is short, let’s not complain with what God has given us, instead we should be
thankful for it. I believe that God is fair and that everything that he does has a purpose. God
never created a perfect man or woman. God created us fairly. Some people may disagree that
God is fair because it is not evident, but for me God is really fair because He created uniquely
and with a purpose in life, it is up to us to find that purpose.

ACTION:
As a student of Ateneo de Zamboanga University and as future nursing student, what I
can do for now is to help the ones who are in need by encouraging them to use their inner
capabilities on how to solve problems that they may have. I can also use my voice and my
capabilities to uplift my classmates who are currently feeling down, feeling stressed, and feeling
tired this semester. I know that a simple smile coming from me and other people would help
those people who are feeling sad to also smile despite of the heaviness that they are feeling. We
should always put in mind that smiles are actually contagious and that one smile could spread to
everyone.

As a future nurse I should be able to advocate the ones with disabilities to use their
capabilities in making their lives more meaningful. I should be able to encourage them that
having certain disabilities must not stop them from achieving their dreams and goals in life. I
should be able to stress the importance of quality life to them. To my classmate, I must
encourage them to do their very best in order to make it through this semester. Simple actions
can already make a difference and I that action must start from me.
EVALUATION
The short clip serves as an eye opener to everyone especially to those who have
disabilities that they must keep on moving forward. Our disabilities should not stop us from
reaching what we want in life. The short clip also serves as an inspiration to everyone that no
matter how rough our life may be and no matter what problems we may get, we must always
learn to find the solutions to those obstacles/problems.

As an Atenean student, we must never get tired of making other people smile, helping the
ones who are in need, and also to uplift the ones who are feeling down. As an Atenean student, it
is also our duty to spread positivity among others and eliminate the negativities that surrounds
us. I’ll end this CERAE paper with a quote saying that “Today I choose life. Every morning
when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain… To feel the freedom that comes
from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices – today I choose to feel life, not to
deny my humanity but embrace it.” –Kevyn Aucoin
