STORAGE TANK INTRODUCCION
There are five basic types of tanks used to store petroleum products :
Fixed roof tanks : high speed diésel (HSD) and slop
Horizontal mounted bullet tanks and spherical tanks : liquid petroleum gas (LPG)
Floating roof tanks :
 Internal floating roof tanks : aviation turbine fuel (ATF)
 External floating roof tanks : motor spirit (MS) , naphtha , superior kerosene oil (SKO)
Underground tanks : all White oil products(HSD/MS /SKO/naphtha/ethanol)

FLOATING ROOF TANKS INTRODUCTION

Fixed roof tanks have higher vapor space
Initial Product Level
Product after vaporization

FLOATING ROOF TANKS INTRODUCTION

Fixed roof tanks have higher vapor space
Floating roof tank is the type of tank where the roof floats directly on top of the product
This aids in minimiszing the vapor space and eliminating the possibility of flammable atmosphere.
MINIMAL VAPORIZATION
FLOATING ROOF TANKS COMPONENTS
The drain plug is fitted onto the swing check valve and is ideally placed inside the central drain
The drain plug helps in filtering any solid debris that get washed down from the roof top
The filtered wáter is drained down the drain pipe to the drain sump

FLOATING ROOF TANKS COMPONENTS

Bleeder vents are used for venting the air to or from the underside of the deck when filling and
emptying the tank
This is to prevent overstress of the roof deck or seal membrane

FLOATING ROOF TANKS OPERATION

The functions of the primary sea lis to minimize vapour loss, centralize the floating roof and exclude
snow and rain form the rim gap
Scissor shoe primary seal will perform well through heavy usage and adapt to tank roundness
abnormalities, manage a good deal of rim spaces , and most importantly maintain tank – Shell
contact resulting in no gaps

FLOATING ROOF TANKS OPERATION

Rolling ladder is the mean of access on to the floating roof
The upper end of the ladder is attached to the gauger platform and the lower end is provided with
an axle with a Wheel on side of ladder which run son a Steel track mounted on a runway structure
supported off the roof
This is so that as the roof moves up and down , the ladder can slide along and take up varying angles
as required

SAMPLING AND GAUGING

1. Keep the dip hatch lid open , before lowering the flask into the tank!
2. Lower the flask and its cork together until the desired height is reached!
3. Fasten the string to which the flask is attached to the dip hatch . with a form tugging motion
pull out the string to which the cork is attached
TANK SAFETY FEATURES
Let us zoom up the rim seal fire protection system to have a better understanding

TANK SAFETY FEATURES

1. Support legs
2. Foam extinguisher cylinder
3. Isolation valve
4. Automatic actuated valve
5. Detection sensor
6. Foam discharge nozzles
TANK SAFETY FEATURES – TOP FOAM PORING SYSTEM
Firefighting foam is an essential component of all types of tank protection systems
Top pouring systems are designed to apply foam gently through the tank inner Wall onto the burning
Surface of the fuel
Gentle application is preferred to maximize the efficiency of the finished foam.
TANK FIRE SCENARIO
The fire is sensed by rim seal apparatus, which triggers the dispatch of foam between the two seals
The fire being big in size does not cease , and continues to burn

TANK FIRE SCENARIO

Foam tender assists in foam pourer , there by extinguishing the fire

TANK FIRE SCENARIO

Fire tender comes to deliver wáter to the fire monitors and simultaneously the wáter sprinklers
opens , this helps in cooling the tank
