H64MOC (with project)

Your report should be around 20-25 pages and include diagrams and other
appropriate data.

Your report should be submitted Electronically via Moodle.

I will create links for coursework and project submissions or indicate
(via Moodle) an alternative way to submit the report. Make sure you
have access to the Moodle page of H64MOB/MOC.

•  you will need to cover material that has not yet been covered in lectures
•  you should try to cover some material outside the lectures
Virgin Island is a remote island, area 1000km2, with one major city, Media, in
the north. For the purpose of this design there are 3 areas:

1.  Media City, densely populated with an area of 100km2.

The density of users in the city centre is 500/km2

2.  The suburban area around Media City is 200km2.

The density of users in the suburban area is 100/km2

3.  The rest of the island is a sparsely populated rural area

The density of users in the rural area is 5/km2.

§  This information is useful in determining capacity and cell size

The Government of Virgin Island would like to set up a mobile
communications network, and asks you to write a proposal for the
structure of the network. There are competing bids to be a service
provider.

Two networks are envisaged:

1.  A voice network based on CDMA (code division multiple access)

technology.
2.  A data network based on 4G-LTE technology

You are free to propose any frequency bands for the voice uplink and
downlink and also for the 4G network.

This configuration provides a mature voice network with the option of a

solely 4G network at some future date.
The report should cover the main aspects of a mobile communication
system;

•  Bandwidth requirements of the system

•  Cell size and capacity in the different regions to cope with the demands
of users
•  Modulation technique on uplink and downlink
•  Error detection and correction methods
•  all these link together
You should justify your choices based on both a literature review and
calculations and graphs comparing the different design options. In some
instances you may need to do your own research about particular
parameters that have not been specified here e.g. ‘typical’ usage time of
voice and data services by users, acceptable bit error to interference ratios
for voice and other data, blocking probabilities. Where appropriate, you
could consider writing short pieces of MATLAB or C-code to generate the
data required to plot the graphs. You might also want to consider
implementing a link budget calculation and/or calculations of blocking
probabilities.

•  you need to do some market research

•  MATLAB or C not essential, you need to optimise parameters e.g. Cell
size. Graphs may be helpful
•  link budget calculations available in references
There is sufficient information available in the lecture notes for you to
obtain an adequate pass of this module. However to achieve a good mark
you will need to perform additional research. The main purpose of this
project is to assess your ability to make design choices for a mobile
communications system. As has been demonstrated in the development of
different systems in the US and Europe, there is no single correct solution.
Please justify your design choices and do not simply copy an existing
system.

•  if you want a good mark work hard!

•  don’t just copy UMTS or IS-95

•  Use more basic textbooks for understanding coding, multiple access etc.
Use these for putting it all together.
•  good starting points but don’t just work from these
CDMA capacity in a single cell – neglecting interference
from other cells (page 146, M. Schwartz):

K=
(W R ) +1
( Eb I 0 )
K- number of users
W- bandwidth [Hz] >> 1/R
K is number of users
R is the data rate for a single user (include any coding bits in here)
Eb/Io – signal to interference ratio (you should reference how you found
this value)

This is the simplest form of this equation.

There are slightly different versions of this
(including noise term, voice activity term, interference from outside cell)

You are trading off bandwidth and cell size

Finding out the cost of these would be helpful
