PUBLISHER gives you all the tools you need to create your own publications,
newsletters, advertising and promotional materials, greeting cards and many more. It allows the
user to integrate graphics into your text and text into your graphics. The user in effect can design
and create their own page according to what they want.
A publication can be many pages or simply one page, and usually contains text, graphics
and all the formatting a user have added.
The Publisher Window will look very familiar with any other application programs. The
most obvious difference is the Objects Toolbar down the left of the screen.
1. TITLE BAR – contains the application program’s name and the filename of the
document.
2. STANDARD TOOLBAR – buttons for common publisher actions.
3. FORMATTING TOOLBAR – buttons used for applying changes and used for editing of
the content.
4. BLANK PAGE – new blank page in a publication.
5. OBJECTS TOOLBAR – used for adding objects to your page.
6. RULER – used for measuring distances within the page.
7. SCROLL BARS – used for viewing portions of the publisher page.
PUBLISHER WIZARDS
A wizard is a tool that can take you step-by-step through the essential elements of
producing different types of publication.
Publication Type – allows you to select the type/kind of publication you desired to have
Ex: Newsletters, Brochures, Greeting Cards, Resume, etc.
Design Set – lists the different wizards according to their style
Ex: Layers, Level, Floating Oval, etc.
Blank Publication – used to create your own publications containing your own designs.
SAVING THE PUBLICATION
As with all computer applications, it’s important to save your work regularly. If you
decide to use an old publication and make changes to it, make sure to save the new changes that
you’ve made.
ADDING TEXT
Just like Microsoft Powerpoint, you cannot simply begin typing in Publisher. Text areas
have to be defined first, as does each element that you insert.
TEXT FRAME – it is an area on a page that contains only text. A user can type directly into a
text frame from the keyboard or insert text from existing files.
The text frame tool allows the user to place a text frame exactly where you need it to be
on the page. (similar to the text box in word and placeholder in powerpoint)
Click on the text frame tool, the cursor changes to a cross hair as you move it onto the
window.
To draw the Text Frame
TEXT FRAME
To Enter a Text, Resizing the Text Frame and Moving the Text Frame
Click on the text frame and start entering text on the area where the insertion point
appears.
To resize the text frame, click inside the text box and place the cursor over one of the
handles. The arrow cursor changes to the resize cursor.
Click and drag the frame to resize it.
To move the text frame, move the mouse over any of the lines marking out of the text
frame.
The move cursor appears and you can click and drag to move the frame.
ADDING GRAPHICS
Words on their own are only half the story. No publication is complete without graphics,
which are available for numerous sources.
The sources are as follows: clip art, images from the internet, own images.
If you need simple, striking and colorful images to illustrate the subject matter of your
publication and to make the appearance livelier, you may need to use clip art that comes bundled
with publisher.
In addition to the clip art provided, you can also insert other images into your publication.
Publisher allows a user to use their own image files.
