Pre-construction soil treatment implies laying down a chemical barrier to prevent termites from
getting back and forth between wood and soil. Termites need wood for food and soil for
moisture, so they constantly travel back and forth between wood and soil. Where this situation
does not exist, termites build the “shelter tubes” (Mud tubes) to span foundation walls and other
parts of the building that separate wood from the soil. In the case of the ground slab of a building,
the termites are entered through expansion joints, cracks, opening for utility and service
connections.
Anti-termite treatment should be carried out in all the building area prior to complete the ground
floor construction works. The materials used for this activity is harmful poisons to animals and
humans. So it is prohibited to precede this activity by the ordinary workers. Therefore it has been
decided to get the service and materials for this activity by local specialist company. The material
and source approval were obtained by CMS/CMC/B/S/05 (Rev 0).
This method statement is explained and confirmed the procedures and materials which are used
for anti-termite treatment in railway station building.

2.1 Material
2.2 Equipments
Well experienced staff is allocated to carry out the railway station building and platform
construction activity as per this method statement. The organization chart for this activity is
described in the following figure.

the ground surface where the termite treatment to be carried out should be free from any
items containing cellulose such as tree stumps, roots, logs, waste wood, etc. In case the
termite mounds are discovered within the plinth area of the building they should be
destroyed and removed from the building area. The soil should be free from large crumbs
of gravel.
Before to start the anti-termite treatment all underground service lines should be placed,
identified and protected (if required) in treating area.
All the buildings in this project are new constructions and there are no any renovated buildings.
Therefore the pre-construction termite treatment methods shall be applied. The termite treatments
in building area are described below under two parts in the view of the explanations convenience.

The chemicals are spraying to the whole building area except the area described under chapter
4.2.1.(below the ground floor beams) The screed concrete layer should be placed within 48 hours
of termite treatments are completed. Please note that the termite treatments are done by specialist
contractor as proposed by CMS/CMC/B/S/005 document. However the screed concrete layer
placement is not included to the above contractor’s scope. This screed concrete layer placement
methodology is described in MS-156 (Method statement for ground floor construction in
kekanadura railway station building). The treated area should be covered until placed the screed
layer if it is unable to lay screed concrete within specified period.
The chemical dilution rate and chemical coverage data are 1:200 and 5 L/ m2 respectively.
5 Risk assessment
The materials used for anti-termite treatments are harmful toxic to the humans and animals. So
there is a hazard to the environment due to use of those types of chemicals. But that hazard
should be minimized by proper application. This chemical should not be sprayed to any free
water flow or should not move with ground water table. Also this chemical should not be sprayed
to the atmosphere.
No person should enter the uncovered treated area until the spray has dried. However if prior
entry is necessary, the personal protective equipment should wear well. If this poisonous is
swallowed, then eyes will damage and will irritate the skin as per the detail given in material
safety data sheet. If spray is contact the skin, then immediately should wash the area with soap
and water.
A risk assessment check list is attached in annexure. Also please refer the material safety data
sheets that submitted with CMS/CMC/B/S/005

6 QA/QC Measures
7 HSE Measure
1. Chemicals used for anti-termite treatment shall be handled (mixing & application) by skill
workmen who have gained experience in this type of work
2. Use protective equipment when mixing & handling chemicals ( respirators , rubber
gloves , full protective clothing including long sleeved shirt , and safety shoes)
3. Minimize as far as possible the exposure of other workers to the chemical treatment
4. Handle chemicals in such a manner as to avoid contamination of the site
5. Staff and workers have not permission to enter the construction site without wearing
personnel protective equipment such as safety helmet, safety shoes/boots and etc.
6. Plan, manage and monitor construction work under fully control and it is carried out
without risks to health and safety of the workers as well as public.
7. Sufficient safety measure with barricade tapes and other relevant materials are arranged
for ensuring the safety of workers and public.
