Exercise No.1 Familiarization with ECDIS Display


Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with ECDIS equipment regarding display’s settings that should
be checked by the deck officer.

11. Set the display to dual vertical view / horizontal view. What is the

12. Set ship’s vector length to 16 min. Move your vessel near displays’
limits so that the ship’s vector to cross the edge.
13. Choose one small area and zoom it so that to appear only that area
on the display. Note the warning displayed.
14. Bring the vessel in the middle of the display.

15. Set the Timer alarm to every 3 minutes.

16. Include in the Logbook “Pilot on board” as manual event.

17. Note the value of tide in area close to your vessel.

18. Enlarge the chart displayed to minimum.

Exercise No.2 Use of Basic ECDIS functions


Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with using the ERBL function. It allows the deck officer to take
measurements to lighthouses and between lighthouses.

Exercise No.3 Create ECDIS route


Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with ECDIS equipment regarding creating route and setting the
safety parameters.

6. Set XTD starboard to 0.3 for legs between WP5 and WP7.

7. Set ship’s turn radius of 0.50 NM for the route.

8. Check the route. How many alarms do you have? Adjust the route before
accept the route. Save the route.
9. Monitor the route. Get out of monitoring route.

10. Go to quick distance calculator and calculate the distance between WP4
and WP9

12. Place a North Cardinal buoy to 2 NM right ahead of your vessel.

Exercise No.4 Safety functions. Settings of the Displayed Electronic Navigational Chart
Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with the Electronic Navigational Chart appearance used with
ECDIS. The settings provide the deck officer with a sum of means intended to assure safety of navigation.

Exercise No.5 Add Info on Electronic Navigational Chart


Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with creating layers of info for the ENC. The function allows
the deck officer to group a sum of info and activate them as layers.

area _____________________. You are required to create several layers and then put them together. Note the steps that you have
followed.

1. Activate user Chart A by pressing ON.

2. Draw a square with an anchor-sign within it. All sides should be


approx. 2 M.
3. Write the name of your ship inside the square.

4. Save the add-info made under the name “Layer 1”.

5. Add a new object including the text “WRECK” and add a danger
depth of 8 m.
6. Move the object approx. 0.5 M west from its original position.

7. Save the changes into the current layer.

8. Unload the add-info layer.

9. So far you have worked in User Chart A. Now activate the User
Chart B.
10. Load “Layer 1” in user Chart A.

11. Activate User Chart B by pressing on the User Chart B sub-folder.

12. Add an object (any object).

13. Save the layer as “Layer 2”.

14. Make sure that both User Charts are activated and press Merge.
Enter “Layer 3” in the Save box.
15. Create No-Go Areas using the Add info tool.

17. Activate user Chart A. Load available the Layers. Unload them.

18. Activate user Chart B. Load available the Layers.

Exercise No.6 Advanced Route planning


Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with planning the route using the advanced tools available in
ECDIS. The functions allow the deck officer to create the route considering parameters such us distances, turning
radius from the route creation stage.

1. Create route 1 with 5 waypoints. Give name to route 1 and WPs.


Place the WP3 to 3 nautical miles N from the actual position.
2. Create a second route with 4 waypoints. Give them name.

3. Link the two routes. Give name and save the new route.

4. Reverse the new route.

5. Check the route. Monitor it.

6. Set the ship’s radius to 0.5 NM.

7. Make visible the distances and directions.

8. Set the XTE portside to 0.4 NM between WP2 and WP3.

9. Using the quick distances calculator, find the total distance. Find
the distance between WP3 and WP8.
10. Set advanced cursor with starboard Headmark to 90deg and fixed
range marker at 2 NM while editing a route with 4 WPs.
11. Edit a SAR Route. Give name to the route.

12. Position the datum of the SAR route (starting point) at exactly 1
NM ahead of your vessel.
13. Reposition the datum at 2.5 NM right astern of your vessel.

14. Set lighthouse visibility range to 4.5 NM while editing a route.

15. Create a Gr. Circle route from North America to UK. Monitor it.

16. Modify the GC route by placing WPs to every 5 deg. Check the
route and monitor it.
17. On the GC route create an alternative passage plan, passing by
south from WP5 to WP8.
18. Calculate the difference between the distances of the RL route and
the GC route.

Exercise No.7 Route monitoring


Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with monitoring tools on the ENC. These allow the deck officer
to set alarms and parameters, and estimate the position of the vessel during the voyage.

10. Set WP approach to 20 min.

11. Set Next Waypoint to Auto selection.

12. Set primary/secondary divergence to 0.8 NM.

13. Set End of Route alarm.

14. Align ship’s body by heading.

15. Activate off chart alarm.

16. Change the primary source of positioning to DR.

17. Use the manually fix position to determine the ship’s position with
Bearing and Distance.
18. Use the manually fix position to determine the ship’s position with
two bearings.

Exercise No.8 Voyage plan. Schedule


Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with planning and scheduling the voyage on ENC. These
abilities allow the deck officer to make a plan for the voyage and adjust if case.
Time 90 min

area _____________________. You are required to plan the voyage. Note the steps that you have followed.

1. Create a route with 10 WPs. Give name. Save.

2. Go to schedule calculation.

3. Insert the speed of 12 Knots for all WPs and set the ETD current
date and time.
4. Select tide surface and press calculate. Name the schedule.

5. What is your ETA (date and time) at WP 10?

6. In WP 4 you have to stay for 30 min. Insert it in your schedule.

7. Then re-calculate the ETA (date and time) at WP 10.

8. By making the difference between the two ETA, can you find the
30min delay?
9. Let’s consider that we have to reach the destination at a certain
time for the same route. Clear the schedule.
10. Set for the first WP the current date and time. Set for the last WP
the ETA.
11. Press calculate. What speed should be kept?

12. Calculate the ETA for the situation the vessel is steering with 20
Knots.
13. At WP 3 make a stop of 1 hour. Re-calculate the time of arrival.

14. Set the XTE between WP3 and WP5 to 0.3 NM and the turn radius
to 0.8.
15. Check the route and note the alarms.

16. Use the add-info function to insert by cursor a NoGo area. Make
the area orange. Note the limits (Lat and Long).
17. Calculate new limits for an area by adding 0.5’ to each lat and 0.6’
to each long. Note the new limits.
18. Use the same add-info function to insert numerically the new
NoGo area.

Exercise No.9 Manual chart corrections


Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be able to apply manual corrections to the ENC. The ability of correcting
the ENC allows the deck officer to keep the charts updated even if the Update CD is not available.

2. Add 5’ to each long. Note the WPs of the new route.

3. Introduce the new route manually. Give name. Save the route.

4. Could you have introduced this new route by a different method?

5. Make the directions and distances to appear.

6. Insert at 1 NM right ahead of your vessel an Isolated danger buoy.

7. Insert a wreak symbol 2 NM north of your vessel.

8. Move both inserted dangers 0.5 NM toward west from the original
positions.
9. Insert on chart a West cardinal Buoy with attachment “caution” at
0.8 NM on your starboard beam.
10. Draw a square in full red colour with 0.5 NM each side,
starting 2 NM on your port beam.
11. Place an anchor inside. Make the depth to appear next to the
anchor sign.
12. Modify the WP3. Save the route

13. Send the ECDIS route to Radar.

14. Check the tide in the navigational area. Note the value.

15. Remove all inserted symbols.
