CHAPTER I
PRELIMINARY

A. Background
English is not rare that we listen to because it is an international language. In Indonesia,
the English language has been used by all the prop even children sajah ranging from childhood

into Mother. However, there are still many in Indonesia who have not mastered the English
language according to the English language proficiency index in 2017 decreased from rank 32
(intermediate proficiency level), being ranked 39 (low proficiency level). Even in the Asian
region alone average value of English language proficiency in Indonesia was 52.15 is below
the average number of English language proficiency asia region.

Vocabulary is one of the important components in learning the English language,


especially English fo business courses in addition to other components such as structure,
proununciation and intonation. Vocabulary asngat have an important role. Because if someone
is weak in the English language the vocabulary of things that are very helpful. The importance
of vocabulary learning assignment is that cukum taknik berhassil in helping someone.
However, there are still many in Indonesia who have not mastered the English language

THEORETICAL BASIS

Vocabulary can be defined a set of alphabet are arranged in a dictionary


consisting of the words that have meaning, or more than one word or a named
collection of words (phrase) which has its own meaning, for example: post = a place
in the last, office = Office, post office = post office, mother = mother, in = inside,
law = law, mother-in-law = mother-in-law, good = good, morning = morning, good
morning = good morning, and sebagainnya (Ur, 1998: 60 ).
Learning English as a foreign language requires a sufficient vocabulary to
play in the four language skills. Based on its use in language skills, vocabulary
English vocabulary divided into active (active vocabulary) and passive vocabulary
(passive vocabulary). Vocabulary active are the words that the speaker can
understand and pronounce correctly and use in construction in the skills of speaking
and writing, while the vocabulary passive are the words that the speaker recognize
and understand the context, but the speakers can not produce exactly the speaking
skills and write (Haycraft, 1978: 44).
Learning vocabulary can be divided into 2 of learning that are receiving
(receptive learning) and learning that are produce (productive learning). Vocabulary
that are receiving (receptive learning) the ability to recognize words and remember
the meaning of the word, while the vocabulary of its produce (productive learning)
the ability to recognize words and remember the meaning of the word, and is also
used in the ability to speak or write in the right time (Nation, 1990: 5).
There are 5 important steps in learning vocabulary, namely: 1) have the
resources to find new words, 2) obtain a clear picture both of which can be seen
(visual) or can be heard (auditory), or both, 3) learn the meaning said that, 4) create
a strong construction between form and meaning of the word, 5) using vocabulary
that (Brown & Payne, 1994 in Hatch & Brown, 1995: 373). This means that
vocabulary learning is the process of finding new words through listening and
reading and using or mengaplikasinya the new words in writing and reading.
Vocabulary in English skills is an important part in the teaching of English
as a foreign language. Vocabulary is an important part in all the languages in which
the learner or student must continually learn words when learners or students also
study grammar (grammar / structure) and pronunciation (pronunciation) (Allen &
Vallete, 1977: 149) , This means that the vocabulary is an early stage to be taught
before teaching aspects of another language (Subiyati, 1992: 18).
Many of the techniques of teaching vocabulary by many experts. Among the
many kinds of teaching techniques, techniques of teaching vocabulary can be divided
into four, namely 1) Media that can be seen (visual aids), 2) an explanation verbally
(verbal explanation), 3) the presentation by voice (audio), 4) contextually (running
context). Media that can be seen include: a) objects that are real (real things), namely
how to teach vocabulary to express or carry objects of the real as the object to be
learned into the classroom, b) a media image, and c) a demonstration that
menngunakan faces or facial expression, gesture, expression, and action.
The English language skills that are receiving meiiputi skills (receptive skills)
and skills that are produce (productive skills). Listening (listening) and reading
(reading) are skills that are receiving (receptive skills). English language skills in
listening and reading is a language user or learner receives the spoken language

(spoken language) or written language (written language), while speaking (speaking)
and writing (writing) is the skill of its produce (productive skills). The vocabulary
has an important role in English language skills, such as listening, reading, speaking,
and writing. Knowledge of vocabulary is very influential on their English skills.
Nation in Scmit and Mc Carthy (1993: 6) says that knowledge of vocabulary is one
component of language skills such as reading and speaking. This means that the
procurement vocabulary is closely connected with the ability to read and speak the
language skills.

RESEARCH METHODS

A. Data Retrieval Techniques


Data collection techniques that we use is through questionnaires and pfretest and then
examining the data and make the data into a report.
B. Instruments minirisert
Instrument or tool that we use in this study the data we get from the results of
questionnaires and fretest.
C. Data analysis technique
The data analysis technique we use is to use quantitative methods useful analysis.
Quantitative analysis of the type of research findings obtained through statistical procedures or
any other matter.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
A. Results Minirisert

From the results of our study are very helpful in teaching students English fo business.
And, it was sanggat importance of a healthy way of assignment, the students vocabulary
more easily in the conversation in the English language. And 90% of the students that we
risert strongly supports the assignment of 50 vocabulary regarding the material presented
by the lecturer every week is helping students in pemeblajaran English fo business.
And 85% that we risrt already agreed in the assignment of making vocabulary namunj
if more than 100 words still disagree.
In addition to using our questionnaire also use fretest to make the 15 words in the
English language and the task of our research are interpreted and the results 70% of the
students have been able to mengatikan the word. In the sense that already 70% of college
students are already capable of accounting education in the English language.
Discussion

From the results of data we collect from our pliers and fretest hassil questionnaire, we
find:
1. Accounting education students strongly agree with their English language learning
techniques using vocabulary
2. 75% of accounting education students still do not agree if the manufacture of
vocabulary was made more than 100 words.
3. Through hassil fretest we did 80% of accounting education students have been able
to conduct a conversation in English.

CLOSING

A. Conclusion
Based on these studies, it can be concluded that in learning English vocabulary sanggat
making techniques important for students and it would help in learning, especially if
associated with discussion material in learning so that students can understand and
follow the learning process.
B. Suggestion
In learning English should be the assignment method of making vocabulary related to
learning materials is done so that the student or students studying can follow pemebelajaran
process and the learning process was not passive.
