Dollar reaches
Rs151 in open
market
KARACHI (Online):  The US
dollar reached a  new  record
high  of  Rs151  in the  open
market on Monday morning,
as  the  rupee  continued its
downward spiral following an
agreement with  the  Interna­
tional Monetary Fund.
The dollar also saw an in­
crease  in the interbank of
Rs0.93  to  Rs148.80.
On Friday,  the d ollar
reached Rs150, was at Rs147
on Thursday  and Rs144  on
Wednesday.
The rup ee is  head in g
down a  steep  slope  and has
been termed Asia’s worst per­
forming  currency.  Analysts
predict  that  the  worst  is  not
yet  over.  The rupee  is  ex­
pected to go through another
bout of devaluation in the com­
ing  days  when  Pakistan  gets

$6 billion loan from the IMF.

International Monetary Fund
(IMF)  so that th e  “ public
would know the deal we have
made with the Fund”.
Talking to the media after
a party meeting at the Parlia­
ment  House, former  premier
Shahid Khaqan Abbasi  said
that there were “a lot of sus­
picions” regarding the condi­
tions that the government had
agreed to with the Fund.
Abbasi,  while  talking  to
reporters, said that  the  State
Bank  of  Pakistan  had  raised
the policy interest rate by 1.5
per cent all of a sudden which
would have an adverse affect
on the  business  community
and will also lead to an increase
in unemployment.

Monetary Fund (IMF) in the
parliament.
Speaking to  reporters  in
the federal capital Khursheed
Shah  criticized  the  PTI  gov­
ernment said that “in the past

IMF, now  the  IMF  will  pre­
pare  the  budget  for  Pakistan

ISLAMABAD  (APP):  Paki­
stan on Monday appointed its
ambassadors and counsel gen­
erals at 18 stations abroad, in­
cluding China and India.
Foreign Minister  Shah
Mehmood Qureshi made the
announcement in that regard
following  his  meeting  with
Prime  Minister  Imran  Khan
here  at  the PM  Office  in  the
afternoon, who gave approval
of the appointments.
Qureshi,  in a  televised
message,  said he  also held
wide­ranging  consultations
with Foreign Secretary Sohail
Mehmood  and his  predeces­
sor Tehmina  Janjua  over the

(BHC) against  declaration of
three districts of the province
including  Quetta,  Gawadar
and Lasbela as “A” areas.
The  petition has been
filed by an office bearer of the
Awami National Party (ANP)
Mahbat  Kaka  in the High
Court on Monday.
In the petition, it has been
pleaded  that  the  provincial
government’s decision to de­

to the Levies Force Act 2010.

Bank  of  Pakistan  (SBP)  on
Monday has  increased its
policy  rate  (interest)  by  150
bps  to  12.25 percent, which
will be effective from May 21,
2019.
SBP’s  Monetary  Policy
Committee,  taking  into ac­
count the macroeconomic situ­
ation, noted that more policy
measures are  required to  ad­
dress  underlying inflationary
pressures from : higher recent
month­on­month headline and
core inflation outturns; recent

potential adjustments  in util­

develop  a  Buddhist  trail  by
exploring  religious  sites  in
Khyber  Pakhtunkhwa  and

followers  of  Buddhism and
monks from across the globe.

Zulfikar Bukhari, who has re­
cently taken charge as Chair­

Bukhari,  who was  also

Development, said the initia­
tive  was  being  taken  by  the
government as part of its plan
to market religious tourism by
introducing  its rich  Buddhist
heritage  to  world.  The  trail
would start  from  Swabi  and
Swat, and culminate at Taxila,
which had numerous Buddhist
sites.

also scattered all over Pakistan

197,600  cusecs
water
ISLAMABAD  (APP):  The
Indus  River System  Author­
ity  (IRSA)  Monday  released
197,600  cusecs  water  from
various  rim  stations  with  in­
flow of 190,000 cusecs.
According to the data re­
leased by IRSA, water level in
the  Indus  River  at  Tarbela
Dam was 1407.36 feet, which
was 21.36 feet higher than its
dead level of 1,386 feet.
Water inflow in the dam
was recorded as 57,700 cusecs
while  outflo w  as 60,000
cusecs. The water level in the
Jhelum River at Mangla Dam
was 1155.30 feet,  which was
115.30  feet  higher  than its
dead level of 1,040 feet whereas
the inflow and outflow of wa­
ter  was  recorded  as  46,700
cusecs and 52,000 cusecs re­
spectively. The release of wa­
ter  at  Kalabagh,  Taunsa  and
Sukku r  was  reco rd ed as
110,900,  82,800  and 22,000
cusecs respectively. Similarly
from the Kabul River, 55,300
cusecs of water was released
at Nowshera and 7,000 cusecs
fro m the  Chenab River at
Marala.

issued show­cause notices to

Food imports drop
9.85% in 10 months
ISLAMABAD  (APP):  The
cou ntry ’s foo d im po rts
dropped by 9.85% to $4.7 bil­
lion in first 10 months of cur­
rent fiscal year against the im­
ports of  $5.216  billio n re­
corded during same period of
the year  2017­18.
The  detail  shows that
import of palm oil witnessed
a  sharp  decrease  of  10.99%
during July­April (2018­19) as
it went down to $1.54 billion
from  $1.73  billion in July­
April  (2017­18).
Sim ilarly,  im po rt o f
pulses  also fell  to $432.54
million in  the  corresponding
period  of current fiscal  year
against  the  import  worth  of
$442.7 million in same period
of  last  year thus  showing  a
decrease of 2.3%.
According  to trade  data
released by Pakistan Bureau
of Statistics (PBS) on Mon­
day, the tea import however
recorded a nominal increase
of 0.61% as the country im­
p o rted $49 5.9 57 m illion
worth of tea during first 10
m o n th s o f curren t fiscal
year while during same pe­
riod o f  last y ear, th e tea
import stood at $492.966 mil­

on the value of the dollar was
created  by  any  mafia  to  sell
their preserved dollars at high
rates.”
Sukhera said as there were no
proper safeguards for domes­
tic industry in FTA, hence, the
ministry concentrated to pro­
vide  maximum protection  to
local  industry  in  the  second
FTA which is a good sign for
industries in Pakistan.
He  urged  the  Pakistani
manufacturers and exporters to
avail this facility to strengthen
Pakistani economy  and  help
in bridging the import­export
gap.

textile exports from the coun­
try witnessed nominal  de­
crease of 0.02 percent during
the  first  ten  months  of  the
current  fiscal  year  compared

stan imported medicinal prod­
uct  worth $929.355  million
during the first ten months of
current  fiscal  year,  showing
positive  growth  of  3.54 per­

port of $897.564 million dur­

that Pakistan has huge poten­
tial of solar energy saying that
