Course Objective
To learn classification of turbo machines and calculate energy transfer through a turbo
machine.
To understand energy transfer and losses in centrifugal compressors, axial fans and steam
turbines.
To understand the steam and gas turbine.
Objectives:
1. To learn classification of UAVs, its operation and requirement.
2. To make student understand the basic concept of UAV system design
3. To understand UAV sub-systems, communication systems and mission planning.
UNIT-I
Introduction to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
History Of UAV, Classification, Introduction To Unmanned Aircraft Systems, System Composition-
Applications of UAVs- military and civilian use
Overview of UAV Systems- Air vehicle, Mission Planning and Control Station, Launch and
Recovery Equipment, Payloads, Data Links, Ground Support Equipments, Introduction to Multi-
Rotor UAVs.
UNIT–II
The Design of UAV Systems
Introduction to design and system selection- Basic UAV Aerodynamics, Performance- Range,
Endurance, Gliding Flight, Climbing Flight; Stability.
Initial Unmanned Aircraft sizing and geometry- initial weight estimation, wing planform
geometry, tail sizing.

UNIT-III
UAS Sub-Systems and Mission Planning
UAV Propulsion- Classification of various propulsion systems: Two cycle engine, The Rotary
Engine, Gas Turbine and Electric Motors. Sources of electric power. Payloads -
Reconnaissance/Surveillance payload, Lethal/Weapon payload. Other payloads.
Launch and Recovery, Communication systems- Data link functions and Attributes. Mission
Planning- Command, Control, Tasking, Processing, Exploitation and Dissemination. MPCS
Architecture, Navigation and Target Location.
