Integrative critical analysis

The article is trying to demonstrate the interaction of work-family by using

Frone’s bidirectional model of work-family conflict and work-family facilitation. I

understand that this model is created to show how work can have a negative

influence on family and on the other hand how work-family facilitation is

positively related with mental and physical wellbeing. Hereby I agree that work

can have both positive and negative influence on a family, depending on the family

dynamics reigns, how important work is for them and how they deal with its

importance.

Connected with the purpose of this article the authors goal is to examine

recent model and viewpoint of vocational psychology and associate these with

current work-family literature. They are doing this with the purpose to create

interventions that will ultimately increase facilitation and decrease conflict. Hereby

I want to add that as professionals we must always be mindful and open to new

ways of intervention because of how things evolve, alongside allot of new factor

that might influence the work-family interaction.

Career counselor has found out that that there are clients that face conflicts

when trying to balance work and family. This make so much sense if we think

about the conflict in work that can generate stress on a client which can affect the
family but it’s also possible that problems in a family can cause poor functioning at

work depending on the situation.

Data has shown that 60% of working adults have a conflict while trying to

balance out family and work. Hereby researchers have shown that WFC has effect

on family dissatisfaction and at the same time a negative influence on job

satisfaction and work performance. Researcher has also discovered trough a meta-

analysis effect size of.31 and .41 between WFC and stress and depression. This

make so much sense when its expected from clients to put more psychological

effort in their family and at the same time have a high demand towards work.

Research also show that 25% of individual reported that their work is interfering

with their responsibility towards their family and adding to that 40% reported

moderate level. This research makers me understand that most working adults in

the United States are not truly satisfied in their work and this might cause stress

when dealing with family responsibility even though culture plays a role when it

comes to family for some individuals where family is supposed to have a higher

priority than work.

In order to find their data’s, many tests and research has been done including

meta-analysis from different professional scholars. These methods seem to be very

trusted and it’s not only about having these evidences. Based on personal and other
personal experiences I also agree to these evidences and data’s that have been

collected.

The authors believe that trough investigation and research they will show

and bring solutions for clients that are suffering work-family conflict. In their

perspective, balance has to be brought in this matter in order to bring satisfaction in

the work-family interface and prevent negative influence that can bring mental

health issues. Related to this I personally I prefer the author that thinks: work and

family because both are important and needed. On the other hand, as career

counselor we must be also open too other group of people or cultures that give

more importance to work or family by exploring these differences. Some family

altogether gives more worth to work. And some family altogether gives more

worth to family, then work based on their values and culture.

. The authors have justified their perspective based on the multiple research

and evidences they have brought into this article. Their perspective lay in

accordance with my perspective especially because of my personal values and

experiences. But at the same time, I would like to create space for people that

doesn’t have the same values and experiences especially from other cultures or

believe. I believe this because we will encounter people of all different places that

will come and seek for help in this area.


After all the authors have acknowledge some controversial statement and

research which make the readers more open about what to expect from them. They

also justified their work by giving importance to the individual health and

functioning in the work-family interface by enhancing the life quality of the

individual by encouraging them to bring more balance in their life.

In order to appreciate these perspectives, we have to be open to understand

but at the same time be critical with a valid motive in order to add more from our

viewpoint to these standpoints for the better purpose.
