If you were to borrow my time machine from Back
To The Noughties and jump back a bit further to
meet me in my infant school years, there would be
four guaranteed ways to get my interest. Sonic The
Hedgehog is the obvious one, of course, and I’ve probably mentioned
my fondness for the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles (as I knew them) in
the magazine before. The ones you might not know about are Sooty and
Thomas The Tank Engine, the latter of which did actually factor into my
gaming habits as a kid.
I didn’t often dig through the local play scheme’s box of Speccy tapes
– most of the time, I was just content to play Video Poker. But one day,
probably after some concerned adult had taken the gambling-themed
game away, I did just that and struck gold with Thomas The Tank Engine.
I had no idea how such a game would play, but I was excited to load it up.
As a fairly faithful rendition of the theme tune played, I had high hopes for
what I was about to experience.
A piece of my innocence died that day. I’d picked normal mode and
was presented with a frustrating nightmare of a game. The simple goal of
getting to the end of the track within the time limit was made impossible
by oncoming trains, objects that would occasionally be placed on the only
viable tracks, and Thomas’ infuriating tendency to derail at high speeds.
Still, the play scheme staff were pleased, because I put down the joystick
for once and went outside.

Sega may have neglected Enduro Racer but
it did rekindle the spirit of the game for its 1992

for eight-player melees), but at its heart was a

you had to pull back on the bike when hitting the
ramps. This would send your rider soaring through
the air, evoking strong memories of the fun, if
flawed, Enduro Racer.

W
e’re suckers for a fighting game character with a
strong gimmick. Well, most of the team are, apart
from Nick who always picks the default. Who were the
most interesting characters in Street Fighter II? As far as
we’re concerned, the only correct answer is Vega, because he could
bounce off walls and lose his claw weapon.
So when Samurai Shodown came along and we first laid eyes on
Nakoruru, we were a little bit excited to say the least, and not just
because of Darran’s love of birds. Here’s a fighter who spends all of
her time accompanied by a hawk named Mamahaha, and it’s more
than just a cute quirk. At Nakoruru’s command, a flaming Mamahaha
will dive headfirst into an enemy at incredible speed, with the angle
of attack depending on which attack strength you use. Not only is
it a very early use of a satellite character, an innovative concept in
fighting games, but it’s incredibly useful. And – sorry, dog lovers –
Mamahaha is just cooler than Galford’s husky Poppy.
BIO
By the summer of 1993, SNK had started to
establish the fighting game specialism for which it
would become famous. Fatal Fury was already up
to its second game, with a revised special edition
in the works, and Art Of Fighting was also doing
good business. This was the background against
which Samurai Shodown emerged, and it quickly
found favour thanks to its tense, high-damage
bouts and historical theme. The game proved to
be a huge hit and was quickly ported to the major
home consoles and handhelds of the day, with
the first of many sequels following in 1994.

FROZEN STIFF EATEN ALIVE to Pilgrim, CRL had published adventure games from
Fergus McNeill’s Delta 4, most of them spoofs of
well-known novels. Mysterious all-female developer
St Brides had also sold games to Clem, including the
lagomorphic Bugsy and another spoof in The Very Big
Cave Adventure. St Brides would have a vital role to play
in this story, too, but more on that shortly.
Sufficiently impressed by Pilgrim (“A dark and moody
piece,” recalls Clem), CRL tasked its author with a
follow-up horror game of some description. Shortly

Skip forward five minutes and he’d started a new game on his
PlayStation and I’d started another new game on my PSP. We
were going to race to the finish. Screw the gig; the starting pistol
was about to fire for the most important contest of our lives. The
rest of the band was enthralled and ready to sub in if Tom or I
got too tired, it was on.
Hours rolled by, then we got to Slippery Climb – the game’s
infamously difficult level. We were neck and neck on that level
for what felt like days – palms sweaty, eyes itchy from not
blinking, and all of us forcing that feeling we should be finessing
our songs further and further back into our brains.
We never got past that level, though; we got too tired in the
early hours of the morning. And the next day we bum-noted our
way through our setlist as Crash-addled zombies. Do I regret
wasting that fertile practice time, though? Not a chance.
