prayer of blessing quietly at the altar. Sometimes these prayers are said aloud.
If the priest says the prayers aloud the assembly’s acclamation each time is

Blessed be God forever.

Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by
the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell;
on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into
heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe
in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of
Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life
everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary
Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy
womb Jesus.

was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

Morning Offering
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You my
prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day for all the intentions
of Your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
throughout the world, in reparation for my sins, for the intentions
of all our associates, and in particular for the intentions of our Holy
Father for this month.

Evening Offering
O eternal God and Ruler of all creation, You have allowed me to
reach this hour. Forgive the sins I have committed this day by

physical stain. Grant that I may rise from this sleep to glorify You
by my deeds throughout my entire lifetime, and that I be victorious

Season of Lent
Lent can be defined as a period of forty (40) days before Easter,
intended to be a time of intensive preparation for the celebration of
the Paschal Mystery.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (excluding Sundays) lasts up to the

Evening of Holy Thursday.

Three Pillars of Lent

 Prayer
 Fasting
 Almsgiving

All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat.

Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence.

Guide for a Good Confession

Before Confession
Be truly sorry for your sins. The essential act of Penance, on the part of the
penitent, is contrition, a clear and decisive rejection of the sin committed,
together with a resolution not to commit it again, out of the love one has for God
and which is reborn with repentance. The resolution to avoid committing these
sins in the future (amendment) is a sure sign that your sorrow is genuine and
authentic. This does not mean that a promise never to fall again into sin is
necessary. A resolution to try to avoid the near occasions of sin suffices for true
repentance. God's grace in cooperation with the intention to rectify your life will
give you the strength to resist and overcome temptation in the future.

Examination of Conscience
Before going to Confession you should make a review of mortal and venial sins
since your last sacramental confession, and should express sorrow for sins,
hatred for sins and a firm resolution not to sin again.

A helpful pattern for examination of conscience is to review the Commandments

of God and the Precepts of the Church:

 Have God and the pursuit of sanctity in Christ been the goal of my life?
Have I denied my faith? Have I placed my trust in false teachings or
substitutes for God? Did I despair of God's mercy?
10
 Have I avoided the profane use of God's name in my speech? Have I
broken a solemn vow or promise?
 Have I honored every Sunday by avoiding unnecessary work,
celebrating the Mass (also holydays)? Was I inattentive at, or
unnecessarily late for Mass, or did I leave early? Have I neglected
prayer for a long time?
 Have I shown Christlike respect to parents, spouse, and family
members, legitimate authorities? Have I been attentive to the religious
education and formation of my children?
 Have I cared for the bodily health and safety of myself and all others?
Did I abuse drugs or alcohol? Have I supported in any way abortion,
"mercy killing," or suicide?
 Was I impatient, angry, envious, proud, jealous, revengeful, lazy? Have
I forgiven others?
 Have I been just in my responsibilities to employer and employees?
Have I discriminated against others because of race or other reasons?
 Have I been chaste in thought and word? Have I used sex only within
marriage and while open to procreating life? Have I given myself
sexual gratification? Did I deliberately look at impure TV, pictures,
reading?
 Have I stolen anything from another, from my employer, from
government? If so, am I ready to repay it? Did I fulfill my contracts?
Did I rashly gamble, depriving my family of necessities?
 Have I spoken ill of any other person? Have I always told the truth?
Have I kept secrets and confidences?
 Have I permitted sexual thoughts about someone to whom I am not
married?
 Have I desired what belongs to other people? Have I wished ill on
another?
 Have I been faithful to sacramental living (Holy Communion and
Penance)?
 Have I helped make my parish community stronger and holier? Have I
contributed to the support of the Church?
 Have I done penance by abstaining and fasting on obligatory days?
Have I fasted before receiving communion?
 Have I been mindful of the poor? Do I accept God's will for me?

11
During Confession
After examining your conscience and telling God of your sorrow, go into the
confessional. You may kneel at the screen or sit to talk face-to-face with the
priest.

Begin your confession with the sign of the cross

"In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit. My last confession was _______ weeks (months, years)
ago."

Say the sins that you remember. Start with the one(s) that is most difficult to
say. (In order to make a good confession the faithful must confess all mortal
sins, according to kind and number.) After confessing all the sins you remember
since your last good confession, you may conclude by saying, "I am sorry for
these and all the sins of my past life."

Listen to the words of the priest. He will assign you some penance. Doing the
penance will diminish the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven.
When invited, express some prayer of sorrow or Act of Contrition such as:

An Act of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you and I
detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the
pains of hell. But most of all because I have offended you, my
God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly
resolve with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do
penance and to amend my life. Amen.

At the End of Confession

Listen to the words of absolution, the sacramental forgiveness of the Church
through the ordained priest.

After Confession
Give thanks to God for forgiving you again. If you recall some serious sin you
forgot to tell, rest assured that it has been forgiven with the others, but be sure to
confess it in your next Confession.

Do your assigned Penance. (Source: Catholic.Org)

Leader: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the

Holy Spirit.
Response: As it was in the beginning, is now and will be for

Leader: Let us pray.

O Jesus, our adorable Saviour, behold us prostrate
at your feet, imploring your mercy for ourselves,
and for the souls of all the faithful departed. Bestow
on us the infinite merits of your passion, on which
we are now about to meditate. Grant that while we
trace this path of sights and tears, our hearts may be
so touched with contrition and repentance, that we
may be ready to embrace with joy all the crosses,
sufferings, and humiliations of our life and
pilgrimage.

Leader: 1st Station: The Lord’s Supper

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
(Genuflect)
Response: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the
world.

Leader: While they were eating, Jesus took a piece of bread,

gave a prayer of thanks, broke it, and gave it to his
disciples. “Take and eat it,” he said; “this is my
body.” Then he took a cup, gave thanks to God, and
gave it to them. “Drink it, all of you,” he said; “this
is my blood, which seals God’s covenant, my blood
13
poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I
tell you, I will never again drink this wine until the
day I drink the new wine with you in my Father’s
Kingdom.” (Matthew 26:26-29)

Our Father.., Hail Mary.., Glory Be..

Leader: Have mercy on us, O Lord.

Response: Have mercy on us.

Leader: 2nd Station: Jesus’ Agony at Gethsemani

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
(Genuflect)
Response: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the
world.

Leader: Jesus left the city and went, as he usually did, to the
Mount of Olives; and the disciples went with him.
When he arrived at the place, he said to them, “Pray
that you will not fall into temptation.” Then he went
off from them about the distance of a stone’s throw
and knelt down and prayed. “Father,” he said, “if
you will, take this cup of suffering away from me.
Not my will, however, but your will be done.” An
angel from heaven appeared to him and
strengthened him. (Luke 22:39-43)

Our Father.., Hail Mary.., Glory Be..

Leader: Have mercy on us, O Lord.

Response: Have mercy on us.

Leader: 3rd Station: Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
(Genuflect)
Response: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the
world.

14
Leader: The High Priest stood up in front of them all and
questioned Jesus, “Have you no answer to the
accusation they bring against you?” But Jesus kept
quiet and would not say a word. Again the High
Priest questioned him, “Are you the Messiah, the
Son of the Blessed God?” Jesus answered: “I am,
and you will all see the Son of Man seated on the
right of the Almighty and coming with the clouds of
heaven!” The High Priest tore his robes and said,
“We don’t need any more witnesses! You heard his
blasphemy. What is your decision?” They all voted
against him: he was guilty and should be put to
death. (Mark 14:55-64)

Our Father.., Hail Mary.., Glory Be..

Leader: Have mercy on us, O Lord.

Response: Have mercy on us.

Leader: 4th Station: The Crowning with Thorns

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
(Genuflect)
Response: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the
world.

Leader: Then Pilate’s soldiers took Jesus into the governor’s

palace, and the whole company gathered round him.
They stripped off his clothes and put a scarlet robe
on him. Then they made a crown out of thorny
branches and placed it on his head, and put a stick
in his right hand; then they knelt before him and
mocked him. “Long live the King of the Jews!” they
said. They spat on him, and took the stick and hit
him over the head. When they had finished mocking
him, they took the robe off and put his own clothes
back on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
(Matthew 27:27-31)

Response: Have mercy on us.

Leader: 6th Station: The Falling of Jesus

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
(Genuflect)
Response: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the
world.

Leader: He was pierced for our offences, crushed for our

sins. Upon him was the chastisement that makes us
whole, by his stripes we were healed. We had all
gone astray like sheep, each following his own way.
But the Lord laid upon him the guilt of us all.
Though he was harshly treated, he submitted, and
opened not his mouth. Like a lamb led to the
slaughter or a sheep before the shearers, he was
silent and opened not his mouth. (Isaiah 52:5-7)

Our Father.., Hail Mary.., Glory Be..

16
Leader: Have mercy on us, O Lord.

Cyrene named Simon, and the soldiers forced him
to carry Jesus’ cross. (Matthew 27:32)

Our Father.., Hail Mary.., Glory Be..

Leader: Have mercy on us, O Lord.

Response: Have mercy on us.

Leader: 8th Station: The Women of Jerusalem

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
(Genuflect)
Response: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the
world.

Leader: A large crowd of people followed him; among them

were some women who were weeping and wailing
for him. Jesus turned to them and said, “Women of
Jerusalem! Don’t cry for me, but for yourselves and
your children. For the days are coming when people
will say, ‘How lucky are the women who never had
children, who never bore babies, who never nursed
them!’ That will be the time when people will say to
the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’ and to the hills, ‘Hide
us!’ For if such things as these are done when the
wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
(Luke 23:27-31)
Our Father.., Hail Mary.., Glory Be..

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
(Genuflect)
Response: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the
world.

Leader: When they came to the place called “The Skull,”

they crucified Jesus there, and the two criminals,
one on his right and the other on his left. Jesus said,
“Forgive them, Father! They don’t know what they
are doing.” (Luke 23:32-34)

Our Father.., Hail Mary.., Glory Be..

Response: Have mercy on us.

Leader: 10th Station: The Good Criminal

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
(Genuflect)
Response: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the
world.

Leader: One of the criminals hanging there hurled insults at

him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and
us!” The other one, however, rebuked him, saying,
“Don’t you fear God? You received the same
sentence he did. Ours, however, is only right,
because we are getting what we deserve for what
we did; but he has done no wrong.” And he said to
Jesus, “Remember me, Jesus, when you come as
King!” Jesus said to him, “I promise you that today
you will be in Paradise with me.” (Luke 23:39-43)
Our Father.., Hail Mary.., Glory Be..
18
Leader: Have mercy on us, O Lord.
Response: Have mercy on us.

Leader: 11th Station: Mary and John

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
(Genuflect)
Response: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the
world.

Leader: Standing close to Jesus’ cross were his mother, his

mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary
Magdalene. Jesus saw his mother and the disciple
he loved standing there; so he said to his mother,
“He is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “She
is your mother.” From that time the disciple took
her to live in his home. (John 19:25-27)

Our Father.., Hail Mary.., Glory Be..

Leader: 12th Station: Jesus Dies on the Cross

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
(Genuflect)
Response: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the
world.

Leader: Jesus knew that by now everything had been

completed; and in order to make the scripture come
true, he said, “I am thirsty.” A bowl was there, full
of cheap wine; so a sponge was soaked in the wine,
put on a stalk of hyssop, and lifted up to his lips.
Jesus drank the wine and said, “It is finished!” Then
he bowed his head and died. (John 19:28-30)

Our Father.., Hail Mary.., Glory Be..

19
Leader: Have mercy on us, O Lord.
Response: Have mercy on us.

Leader: 13th Station: Jesus is Laid in the Tomb

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
(Genuflect)
Response: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the
world.

Leader: When it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea

arrived; his name was Joseph, and he also was a
disciple of Jesus. He went into the presence of
Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate gave
orders for the body to be given to Joseph. So Joseph
took it, wrapped it in a new linen sheet, and placed
it in his own tomb, which he had just recently dug
out of solid rock. Then he rolled a large stone across
the entrance to the tomb and went away. (Matthew
27:57-60)

Our Father.., Hail Mary.., Glory Be..

Leader: Have mercy on us, O Lord.

Response: Have mercy on us.

Leader: 14th Station: The Resurrection

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
(Genuflect)
Response: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the
world.

Leader: Very early on Sunday morning the women went to

the tomb, carrying the spices they had prepared.
They found the stone rolled away from the entrance
to the tomb, so they went in; but they did not find
the body of the Lord Jesus. They stood there
puzzled about this, when suddenly two men in
20
bright shining clothes stood by them. Full of fear,
the women bowed down to the ground, as the men
said to them, “Why are you looking among the dead
for one who is alive? He is not here; he has been
raised. Remember what he said to you while he was
in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be handed over to
sinners, be crucified, and three days later rise to
life.'” (Luke 24:1-6)

Our Father.., Hail Mary.., Glory Be..

Leader: Have mercy on us, O Lord.

Response: Have mercy on us.

Final Prayer
Leader: Let us pray.
O Lord Jesus Christ, help me to see in the cross the
lengths to which man’s sin will go. Help me to see
in the cross that sin is enmity to you, that sin is the
destroyer of all beauty, and the enemy of all
loveliness. Help me to see in the cross the lengths to
which your love will go, that you did love us so
much that you kept nothing back. Help me to see in
the cross the horror of sin, and to depart for ever
from it. Help me to see in the cross the wonder of
your love and to surrender forever to it. I ask you
this through your sorrowful mother.
Respose: Amen.

Priest: The Lord be with you.

Response: And with your spirit.

Priest: May the Almighty God bless you, the Father and
the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Response: Amen.

Priest: Go and carry the cross of Christ.

Response: Thanks be to God!
