DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGG. GIST, PESHAWAR
Midterm examination, 8th semester Spring 2019 semester
Time allowed: 90 mins Total Marks: 90
I

(a) Discuss the criteria for differentiating between a static and dynamic force?

(b) Differentiate between center of mass and center of rigidity. What is their role in seismic
resistance of a structure?
(c) A single story, 2-bay R.C. frame (Figure 1) is required to be constructed in a hilly area.
The design engineer wants to equally distribute the seismic force in all columns. What
shall be the size of 15 ft column (having square shape) that fulfills this criterion if the
other 2 columns have a size of 12″x12″. Take Econcrete= 3000 ksi and assume that beam-
floor system is infinitely stiff in flexure. (CLO-1, PLO-1, C-2) (4+6+10)

II

(a) Define seismic hazard, seismic vulnerability and seismic risk

(b) Differentiate between: (i)) system’s natural time period and exciting time period, (ii)
periodic and harmonic vibrations.
(c) Determine the DOF of systems shown in Figure 2. Support you answer with
argument(s). (CLO-2, PLO-2, C-4). (5+5+10)
III

(a) Develop the equation of motion of the frame shown in Figure 3, under the action of a
lateral dynamic force p(t). Consider a distributed gravity load of 10 k/ft acting on the
beam. Neglect damping effect. Assume that the flexural stiffness of beam is too high as
compared to columns so that rotations of beam- column joints can be neglected and
axial deformations in beam is negligible. Take E = 29,000 ksi, I = 1200 in4.
(CLO-2, PLO-2, C-4) (30)

IV

(a) Which parts of Figure 4 indicates: (i) insignificant amplification of deformation

response factor (ii) significant amplification and de-amplification of deformation
response factor, (iii) dynamic displacements becomes equal to static displacements; (iv)
deformation response factor becomes almost constant after de-amplification, (v) in-
phase and out-of-motions. Discuss all the above in term of frequency ratio.
(CLO-2, PLO-2, C-4). (20)
