say goodbye to one of the sweetest
companies around, R. Torre &
Company, Inc. , maker of Torani
Syrups.
Torani specializes in flavored syrups
ranging from the classic vanilla to
toasted sesame.
The company was founded in 1925 in
San Francisco’s North Beach by
Rinaldo and Ezilda Torre, who immi-
grated from Italy. The couple coined
the “world’s first flavored latte” and

Two major police organizations
won’t fight state use-of-force bill

SACRAMENTO — Major law enforcement organizations
dropped their opposition Thursday to California legisla-
tion that strengthens standards for when officers can use
deadly force, a shift that followed changes to the measure.
The measure would bar police from using lethal force
unless it is “necessary” to defend against an imminent
threat of death or serious bodily injury to officers or
bystanders. It was prompted by public outrage over fatal
police shootings, including the killing of unarmed vandal-
ism suspect Stephon Clark in Sacramento last year.
The current standard lets officers kill if they have “rea-
sonable” fear they or others are in imminent danger, a
threshold that makes it rare for officers to be charged fol-
lowing a shooting and rarer still for them to be convicted.

Two in custody after
separate crashes in San Bruno
Police in San Bruno were busy late
Wednesday night dealing with separate
crashes that both ended with people in cus-
tody.
The first crash was reported at 11:06 p.m.
on the 800 block of Hensley Avenue as a
hit-and-run. Police said a Scion tC sedan had
crashed into several parked vehicles and
witnesses saw several people flee from the
scene.
According to police, not long afterward, a
call came into dispatch reporting that a per-
son had been carjacked not far from the
scene of the crash. An investigation deter-
mined the caller had not been carjacked, but
rather was the Scion driver, 19-year-old
South San Francisco resident Carlos Enrique
Gomez Perez.

vative funding mechanisms in place to

exempt zero-emission transit buses, or
ZEBs, from the state portion of the sales

duced in response to a fire caused by a lithi-
um-ion battery ignition at the Sho reway
Faci l i ty in San Mateo County. The fire
resulted in $8.5 million in damages to the
facility, which had to be shut down for 90
days and took over a year to restore to full
service. While current law prohibits these
batteries from being thrown in the trash,
and requires large retailers to have a mecha-
nism to accept all rechargeable batteries
from consumers for recycling, batteries
that are embedded in devices are not subject
to the law, according to his office.
• A bill that would require community col-
leges to grant overnight access to campus
parking facilities for homeless students to
sleep in their vehicles passed out of the
Assembly Thursday with bipartisan sup-
port, according to the office of

community colleges to grant overnight
access to campus parking facilities to any
homeless student that is enrolled in course-
work, has paid enrollment fees if not

mentation plan that includes, in part, an
overnight parking form and liability waiv-
er, designation of a specific parking area or
areas, accessible bathroom facilities,
hours of operation and overnight parking
rules, according to Berman’s office.

Two to leave Belmont-Redwood

of the Belmont-Redwood Shores Elementary
School District Board of

announced their plans to
resign from their posts.

noting he had been thinking about leaving
the district when Tashjian declared his resig-
nation. As it is easier to hold group inter-
views for two vacant posts, Phan said he

Man arrested for
breaking into bakery
A Redwood City man was arrested
Wednesday for breaking into Emily’s Cakes
late Tuesday night and
stealing dough from the
cash register, according
to the San Mateo County
Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately
11:20 p. m. , the man,
identified later by the
Sheriff’s Office as
Manuel Magdaleno, 28,

by shattering a glass door. He broke open
two cash registers and stole money from
inside before leaving. The business had
high-quality video and deputies recognized
Magdaleno from a previous burglary he
committed in January, after which he was
placed on probation, according to the

The next day, at about 11:48 a. m. ,
deputies arrested him at his residence where
there was also evidence linking him to the
crime, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

New plans for South City Civic Center
Most recent design lauded for alignment with expectation for signature look

South San Francisco officials unveiled a
fresh, modern design for the new civic cen-
ter with hopes of establishing an iconic
facility which is both unique but utilitarian.
The city’s Design Review Board as well as
the Parks and Recreation Commission gave
initial favorable reviews to the new propos-
al during separate discussions Tuesday, May
21, said Assistant City Manager Marian
Lee.
The updated design was called for by offi-
cials hoping to construct a signature build-
ing after previous plans were deemed inade-
quate and uninspiring, sending planners
back to the drawing board for a more
intriguing proposal.
Lee said the most recent designs are much
more closely aligned with the expectations
of officials planning to finance much of the
construction cost with money generated by
a sales tax hike.
“This one really hits the signature mark
that the council wanted,” she said. “We
wanted a good functioning, efficient build-
ing, but also wanted something really sig-
nature to the city.”
The proposed three-story building will
house the Parks and Recreation Department,
with the library and shared community
space as well as City Council chambers at
the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and
Antoinette Lane. It will be adjacent to a
planned new police station, which is also
part of the Civic Center campus, plus a new
park.
The project is roughly the same size as the
previously planned facility, and Lee said
officials are hopeful it falls within the $210
million budget, though ultimately construc-

Joan Lee Anderson Shaughnessy, 86, passed away Friday, May
17, 2019 at her home in San Mateo, surrounded by her loving
family. Joan was born in 1932 to Andrew & Florence Anderson
in San Francisco, the youngest of 2 children. She graduated from
Presentation High School in 1950. Joan worked for the telephone
company and met her husband, Bill in 1956, and they married in
1957 in San Francisco. Joan lovingly raised 4 children with her
husband. She spent many hours volunteering in her community helping those in need.
Joan was a kind and spirited lady who brought joy to everyone.
Joan is preceded in death by her husband Bill and her son Danny. She is survived
by her 4 children: MaryAnn (Max), Dennis (Melinda), Pat (Jim) & Jeanne (Drew);
10 grandchildren: Alison (Timmy), Eileen, Heidi, Sean, Sarah (Ezra), Emily (Kara),
Megan, Kate, Danny & Lucy; 3 great- grandchildren: Ian, Nicki & Hannah; and many
loving nieces & nephews.
Memorial Mass will be held at 11am on Monday, May 27th at St. Bartholomew

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump
rolled out another $16 billion in aid for
farmers hurt by his trade policies, and finan-
cial markets shook Thursday on the grow-
ing realization that the U.S. and China are
far from settling a bitter, yearlong trade dis-
pute.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue
said that the first of three payments is like-
ly to be made in July or August and suggest-
ed that the U.S. and China were unlikely to
have settled their differences by then.
“The package we’re announcing today
ensures that farmers do not bear the brunt of
unfair retaliatory tariffs imposed by China
and other trading partners,” Perdue said.

directed the U.S. intelligence community on
Thursday to “quickly and fully cooperate”
with Attorney General William Barr’s inves-
tigation of the origins of the multi-year
probe of whether his 2016 campaign collud-
ed with Russia.
The move marked an escalation in
Trump’s efforts to “investigate the investi-
gators,” as he continues to try to undermine
the findings of special counsel Robert
Mueller’s probe amid mounting Democratic
calls to bring impeachment proceedings
against Trump.
Press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a
statement that Trump is delegating to Barr
the “full and complete authority” to declas-
sify documents relating to the probe, which
would ease his efforts to review the sensi-
tive intelligence underpinnings of the
investigation. Such a move could create
fresh tensions within the FBI and other
intelligence agencies, which have histori-
cally resisted such demands.

Three dead, state capital battered as storms rake Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — An outbreak of
nasty storms spawned tornadoes that razed
homes, flattened trees and tossed cars across
a dealership lot, injuring about two dozen
people in Missouri’s capital city and
killing at least three others elsewhere in the
state.
The National Weather Service confirmed
that a large and destructive twister moved
over Jefferson City shortly before midnight
Wednesday.
The tornado cut a path about 3 miles long
and a mile wide from the south end of
Jefferson City north toward the Missouri
River, said police Lt. David Williams.

dozen injuries, Williams said, and around
100 of people went to shelters. Hospitals

30 specific ideas — that are readily achiev-
able.
“Surprise medical bills” are the shocking-
ly high charges insured patients can get hit
with when a hospital or doctor is not in
their insurers’ network.
Earlier this month, Trump held a White
House event to declare his eagerness to sign
a fix into law.

The effects of Airbnb in cities

hen legacy businesses are
threatened by new com-
petitors, too often they
respond by lobbying for regulation
to quash them. It’s notable, then,
that Marriott recently announced it is
starting a new home-rental business,
putting the world’s biggest hotel
operator in direct competition with
Airbnb, the world’s largest home-
rental business.
Many in the hotel industry have
dismissed Airbnb or attributed its
success to stealing business by run-
ning unregulated and untaxed illegal
hotels. There has been little hard
research on exactly how Airbnb
affects the hotel market. But now
three professors in hotel manage-
ment and marketing — Tarik Dogru
from Florida State, Makarand Mody
from Boston University, and
Courtney Suess from Texas A&M —
have analyzed Airbnb’s “disruptive
impact” in 10 key markets. Their
findings make a case for old-fash-
ioned competition.

after Airbnb was founded in 2008.
Over this period the available
accommodations in these cities dra-
matically increased, in good part
thanks to the entry of Airbnb. The
researchers weren’t surprised to find a
resulting loss in hotel revenue. For
each 1% increase in Airbnb supply in
a city, hotel revenue declined by
0.02%.
Given how much Airbnb supply is
coming online each year, that can be
a big hit to hotels. In New York City
in 2016, it could have meant a loss
of as much as $365 million depend-
ing on the price of the rooms that
went unrented because of Airbnb.
The news is brighter for con-
sumers. The arrival of Airbnb has

trust, but Airbnb appeals to people
seeking unique experiences that
reflect the place they’re visiting.
As with any disruptive new com-
petitor, companies such as Airbnb
bring out the regulators. And here the
authors have a warning. “The appli-
cation of excessive legislation driv-
en by the interests of incumbent
industries,” they note, “has the
potential to stifle innovation that
ultimately benefits the consumer”
and harms economic growth. Let the
competition continue.

The end of disruption
T
he term disruption has been a popular axiom of
the recent age with the idea that the old ways fall
apart to make room for a brave new future. What
was once a unifying startup statement is now a corporate
cliché, weary and worn and ready for its own crumbling
— both through its own weight of use and government
intervention as we begin to recognize the impact of such
disruptions.
With regard to monopolies, this new age will have its
reckoning as Standard Oil did in 1911, as AT&T did in
1984 and Microsoft did in 2001. With regard to privacy
and social responsibility, this will come in different
ways. Legislation is one way, particularly as people start
to see the impact of this recent action.
While there could be pages upon pages written about the
overall societal impact of the new economy both now and
into the future when it comes to quality of life and gentrifi-
cation, let’s focus on one
aspect.
One case in point is ride-
hailing services and the
impact on taxi service, traffic
congestion and workers.
Scroll back time to when there
were not ride-hailing services.
Taxis were few and far between
and successfully hailing one
was a work of art demanding
skill, gumption and a bit of
luck. Taxi drivers were heavily
regulated and obtaining a
much-sought medallion was
often a career goal. Drivers
could eke out a living, service
was overall professional with complaints focused on the
occasional long routes and chattiness.
With the advent of ride-hailing services, you are guaran-
teed a ride within minutes at the location of your choosing
for a relatively good price. But at what societal cost?
Traffic congestion is poor. Uber and Lyft drivers might
be overall professional and courteous, but the quality of
the driving has a wide range with most skewing to poor
with blocked traffic, last-minute maneuvers and overall
erraticism. A recent study indicated that traffic congestion
in San Francisco increased 62 percent because of ride-hail-
ing services. In addition, public transit is suffering as
more people gravitate toward these cars rather than buses
and light rail.
There is also concern that Uber and Lyft, despite raising
money through recent initial public offerings, do not
make money and drivers are starting to come around to the
idea that they aren’t realizing the same fortune as those
running the service. And a recent court case that saw a
decision that drivers are indeed contractors and not
employees was an indication that this issue might come
up again as more people settle into their roles as drivers.
This all adds up to the slow realization for many that per-
haps all these rides were simply too good to be true.
Because they were.
The taxi industry was ripe for change and both Uber and
Lyft exploited that for profit. However, it also appears
some drivers also feel exploited and government officials
are also concerned about impact on both traffic and public
transit. In San Francisco, there is movement toward estab-
lishing a tax on fares for transportation improvements.
This is one step, but it might be a step toward others that
include regulation of drivers for backgrounds, behavior
and skill. That oversight would take it closer to the prior
system we had, in which the taxi industry was regulated
for just these things. So we may be heading full circle to a
more regulated industry that performs the same services
but in different ways. Standard Oil grew to a monopoly,
was broken up, and the industry consolidated over time.
Same with AT&T. Microsoft revamped its services after
the antitrust case, suffered because of it, then grew again
into a value rather than growth company. Other disrupting
companies will have new oversight. Uber and Lyft will
have to accommodate government time and again as it
grows and settles into its industry — perhaps they might
even require medallions. New and emerging companies
will settle down and become old companies with more
government oversight. That’s the American way, at least
since the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 and Theodore
Roosevelt’s Square Deal of 1910.

An exhibit at the de Young Museum “From Gold Mining
to Data Mining” seeks to illustrate the tension created by
disruption outside of the corporate world parlance. In the
posted abstract on the exhibit, it describes how rapid
growth or decline has served to displace people over the
years. During the Gold Rush, it was the Ohlones. During
the tech boom, it is the lower and middle class. Put sim-
ply, the rush to riches comes at the expense of current
communities.
The concept is strong and certainly current.

Stocks skid on worries of trade standoff

Heightened worries that the U. S. and
China are headed for a long standoff in their
costly trade dispute put investors in a sell-
ing mood Thursday.
Stocks ended sharply lower on Wall Street
in a broad sell-off that left the benchmark
S&P 500 index on track for its third straight
weekly loss and had the Dow Jones
Industrial Average down more than 400
points until late afternoon.
Traders sought safety in the bond market,
driving bond prices higher, which pulled
the yield on the 10-year Treasury to 2.31%,
the lowest level in more than a year.
The stock market has been highly
volatile since Washington and Beijing
escalated their dispute over trade earlier this
month. Now, the two sides have broken off
negotiations and appear set for a long
standoff. Investors are concerned that a pro-
longed trade war could stunt economic
growth and hurt corporate profits.
“Markets are appreciating how far apart
the two sides are and how messy the grand
deal would be that both sides had led us to
believe was coming very quickly,” said
Sameer Samana, senior global market
strategist at Wells Fargo Investment
Institute.
The S&P 500 index fell 34.03 points, or
1.2%, to 2,822.24. The index was down
2.5% before the selling eased. The Dow lost
286.14 points, or 1.1%, to 25,490.47. At
its lowest, the Dow slid 448 points.
The Nasdaq composite dropped 122.56
points, or 1.6%, to 7,628.28. The Russell
200 index of small company stocks gave up

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook removed
more than 3 billion fake accounts from
October to March, twice as many as the pre-
vious six months, the company said
Thursday.
Nearly all of them were caught before they
had a chance to become “active” users of the
social network.
In a new report, Facebook said it saw a
“steep increase” in the creation of abusive,
fake accounts. While most of these fake
accounts were blocked “within minutes” of
their creation, the use of computers to gen-
erate millions of accounts at a time meant
not only that Facebook caught more of the
fake accounts, but that more of them slipped
through.
As a result, the company estimates that
5% of its 2.4 billion monthly active users
are fake accounts, or about 119 million.
This is up from an estimated 3% to 4% in the
previous six-month report.

removed 7.3 million posts, photos and
other material because it violated its rules
against hate speech. That’s up from 5.4 mil-
lion in the prior six months.
The company said it found more than 65
percent of hate speech on its own, before
people reported it, during the first three
months of 2019.
That’s an improvement from 52 percent in
the third quarter of 2018.

combat hate on its platform, as material
continues to slip through even with recent
bans of popular extremist figures such as

The Central Coast Section Division I soft-
ball semifinal between No. 2 San Mateo and
No. 3 Aragon was about what you would
expect from two good teams that know each
other very well.
The teams took turns grabbing momen-
tum, but it was the Dons who grabbed it last
as they rallied from a 5-3 deficit to beat the
Bearcats 7-5 at College of San Mateo and
advance to their first CCS softball champi-
onship game since 1986.
The Dons will face top-seeded Watsonville
(23-4) in the finals at 12:30 p.m. Saturday
at PAL Stadium in San Jose. Watsonville
beat No. 5 San Benito 5-4 in the other semi-
final.
And to think, four years ago Aragon fin-
ished the season 1-22.
“It’s amazing,” said Kayleigh Puchinelli,
a senior second baseman who was on that 1-
win team as a freshman. “I don’t know if I’m
going to play next year, so I want this sea-
son to last as long as possible.”
Not surprisingly, the long ball factored
into the game for Aragon (21-6), as the
Dons had hit 29 homers heading into the
game. Also not surprising, freshman Megan
Grant blasted one Thursday, her 13th on the
season.
But Puchinelli, the leadoff hitter, and No.
2 hitter Shannon Galliano had combined for
one home run this season. They doubled that
number Thursday as each went deep against
San Mateo (17-6).
“Our amazing offense has always kept us
in [games],” said Aragon head coach Roger
Miller “We just tell them to keep it close.”
Puchinelli’s three-run blast to left in the
top of the sixth proved to be the deciding hit
as it turned a 5-3 deficit into a 6-5 advan-
tage. Galliano gave the Dons an insurance
run as she followed with a solo shot to right
for a 7-5 lead.
“Sage [Hager, San Mateo pitcher] had one
bad inning and they took advantage,” said
San Mateo head coach Alyssa Jepsen.
Puchinelli’s homer was her only hit of the
day. She struck out in her first two at-bats,
but drew a walk in the fifth, giving her con-
fidence going into her sixth-inning at-bat.

The Knights continued their assault on CCS
pitching as they moved into the Division II
championship by beating up the Mariners at
Los Gatos High School.
It was Hillsdale’s third straight mercy-rule
win in the playoffs.
Hillsdale (17-7) immediately put pressure on
Aptos (16-10) by scoring four times in the top
of the first inning. The Mariners scored their
only run in the bottom of the inning, but the
Knights answered with a two-run second for a 6-
1 lead. They then dropped the hammer, scoring
five runs in each of the third and fourth innings
to finish off a 15-run, mercy-rule win after four
inning.
Hillsdale was a hitting machine Thursday,
banging out 18 hits — half of which were dou-
bles. Sophomore Mika Chong had three two-
baggers on the day and joined with Kealani
Cardona to drive in five runs each. Chong was 4
for 4 on the day, Cardona went 3 for 3, with a
pair of doubles.
Addison Eftekhari went 3 for 3 with four runs
scored and three RBIs, Brianna Santos added a
pair of hits, both doubles, and drove in a run.
Hayley Ahlvin and Alex Bunton each drove in a
run as well for the Knights.
That was more than enough offense for
Cardona, who earned the win in the circle and
has allowed only two runs through three games.
The Knights will face fifth-seeded Pioneer at
10 a.m. Saturday at PAL Stadium in San Jose.
The Mustangs upset top-seeded Valley Christian
6-2.

The Mustangs scored three runs in the top of
the 11th to eliminate the Knights in the semifi-
nals of the CCS Division III bracket.
Menlo (17-10) scrapped and clawed to stay in
the game. Down 3-0, Menlo scored three times
in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. The
Knights then forced extra innings on a JC Ng
RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Menlo
had a chance to win it in the eighth, when it
loaded the bases with no outs, but could not
push a run across.
The Menlo defense then did its job when Ng
gunned done a runner at the plate in the top of
the ninth.
Ian Collins drove in a pair of runs for Menlo,
including a home run. Charlie Giesler also col-
lected an RBI.
The result of the other Division III semifinal
game, which pitted No. 5 and defending cham-
pion King’s Academy vs top-seeded Pacific
Grove, was not available at press time.

Sharks head into uncertain offseason

SAN JOSE — If Joe Thornton comes back for a 22nd season in
the NHL, it would only be with the San Jose Sharks. Captain Joe
Pavelski is confident he will get a deal done to stay with the fran-
chise he joined as a draft pick back in 2003.
The situation with the other major potential unrestricted free
agent is far less certain. After Erik Karlsson’s injury-plagued first
season in San Jose ended with him sitting at home with an injured
groin during a Game 6 loss at St. Louis in the
Western Conference final, the star defenseman
said he hasn’t thought yet about his plans for the
summer.
“I’ve been treated with nothing but class and
respect here,” Karlsson said Thursday. “I’ve seen
the best side of what this organization and this
city has and I like everything I’ve seen. Now I
have to kind of regroup and assess everything. A
lot of things can happen. It’s a weird business

pens is going to happen for a reason.”
Karlsson had a less-than-ideal season after being acquired as
potentially the final piece needed for a championship in a trade
from Ottawa on the eve of training camp. He struggled to adjust to
his new team early in the season before playing at an elite level for
about six weeks when the Sharks looked as good as any team in the
league.
Karlsson then injured his groin and missed 27 of the final 33 reg-
ular-season games before returning for the playoffs, lacking his
usual burst as a skater. Even at less than 100% in the postseason,
Karlsson showed flashes of his playmaking with 14 assists and two
goals, including the overtime winner in Game 3 against the Blues.
But he was unable to play for a long stretch late in a Game 4 loss
and was limited in a Game 5 loss before sitting out the third period.
He couldn’t go at all in Game 6.
In the final game, the Sharks were also without Pavelski, who re-

SANTA CLARA — Two key San Francisco 49ers defensive play-
ers are sidelined from injuries during the offseason program.
The 49ers said that safety Jimmie Ward broke
his collarbone at practice on Thursday and that
first-round defensive end Nick Bosa has been
diagnosed with a grade 1 hamstring strain.
Ward is expected to miss at least eight to 12
weeks but should be healed by the start of the sea-
son. Bosa will need a few weeks to recover and
will likely be out for the rest of the offseason
program that ends June 13 but ready for training

Pavelski and Thornton have been integral parts
of the Sharks for years. Pavelski was a seventh-
round draft pick in 2003 and has scored 355 goals

Thornton arrived in a franchise-altering trade from Boston on
Nov. 30, 2005, turning the Sharks into a perennial Cup contender
that can never quite win it all.

drive the messaging every day in here. From a coach’s perspective,
those guys are invaluable people for us.”
Whether they come back is not yet certain.
The Sharks opted not to extend Pavelski’s contract last summer
when he came off a 22-goal season hampered by injuries. But his
level of play rose this year with a team-leading 38 goals and he will
be eligible to hit the open market in July, shortly before his 35th
birthday.
“I know I’m going to be playing hockey next year. Hopefully it’s
going to be here,” he said. “We love it here. I think something will
happen, who really knows, but coming off a lot of emotions com-
ing through the playoffs and that round, we’ll sit down and take a
look at what will happen here.”

Bosa was picked second overall by the 49ers despite going down
with a season-ending core muscle injury in his third game last sea-
son for Ohio State. Bosa was part of a major upgrade this offseason
to San Francisco’s pass rush, along with defensive end Dee Ford.

Boston’s Backes to F1: Racing at Indy 500 is
face former team in harder than we thought

BOSTON — David Backes waited
his entire career to play for the
Stanley Cup, and now he’s going to
have to do it against some of his
best friends in hockey.
The former St. Louis captain will
face his old team with the NHL title
on the line, starting Monday night
when the Blues
and Bruins open
the final in
Boston. It’s not
the ideal situa-
tion for the 35-
year-old Backes,
but after waiting
13 seasons to
get to this
David Backes point, he’ll take
it.
“It’s a binary decision now. It’s us
or them. One of us is going to win
the Cup,” he said this week after the
Blues beat San Jose in the West
final.
“That’s the position you’d want to
be in at the beginning of the year,”
Backes said. “I wish those guys well
up until this point, but now it’s all
about us and winning this thing. All
our thoughts and all our efforts are in
this room.”
Backes was an all-star in 2011 and
a leader on the Blues who finished in
the top seven of the Selke Award
voting for five straight seasons
before signing a five-year, $30 mil-
lion contract with Boston in 2016.
St. Louis feared Backes would be a
financial burden by the end of the
deal.
Backes has indeed slowed, and
coach Bruce Cassidy scratched him
for three games against Toronto in
the first round and twice more
against Columbus.
But since he returned to the line-
up, the Bruins have won seven in a
row to reach the final for the third
time since 2011.
Cassidy said Backes’ leadership
and experience were factors in get-
ting back in the lineup. And now
that the team has advanced, winning
a Cup for Backes has become a moti-
vational cause in the locker room.
“He’s a very popular guy on the
team,” Cassidy said. “So the guys
that won one want to win again,
obviously, but there’s a little extra
pull for sure for a guy like David.
He’s been a captain in this league,
he came to the Bruins with the feel-
ing he’ll have an opportunity to win
a Cup, and here we are.”
And the Blues will be trying just
as hard to prevent it.
“I don’t think anybody thinks
about personalities,” St. Louis for-
ward Vladimir Tarasenko said.
“Yeah, we spent a lot of time togeth-
er, but on the ice there is no friends.
We are not friends. It’s just going to
be a hard final.”
Blues defenseman and team cap-
tain Alex Pietrangelo said he learned
a lot from Backes during their six-
plus seasons together. Their fami-
lies have also become close.
But he has played against Backes
in the Olympics and the NHL regular
season, so it’s not unfamiliar terri-
tory.
“I don’t want to dwell on this too
much. We’ve got a bigger thing to
deal with,” he said. “I sent him a text
yesterday to say, ‘Thanks, and we’ll
be friends again in two weeks.’ And I
never got a message back. I guess
they already started.”
Backes said Pietrangelo is one of
his best friends. Or at least he will
be again when this is all over.
“I told him I’m going to love him
now, I’m going to love him after-
ward, but I’m going to hate him for
the next three weeks. That’s a mutu-
al decision,” Backes said. “We’ll
patch up whatever we need to patch
up afterward, but it’s all about what’s
in this room, what our goal is and
what we need to do to win these
games.”

for the Indianapolis 500 last
weekend — getting around
Indianapolis Motor Speedway at
speeds eclipsing 230 mph is a lot
tougher than it looks.
“I didn’t understand what oval
racing was. I didn’t understand
what IndyCar racing was, because
there is no exposure to it in
Europe,” said Rossi, an American
who moved to Europe as a teenager
and made his F1 dreams come true
with seven starts during the 2014
and ’15 seasons.
Edelman is still hungry at 33

day after his 33rd birthday, a newly
enriched Julian Edelman was doing
what he loves best: practicing with
his fellow New England Patriots.
“We got something done,” the
veteran wide receiver said Thursday
after the Patriots concluded an
organized team activity on the
practice field behind Gillette
Stadium. “Business is business,
and we’re done with that, and all I
know is that we’re here and I’m
going to be here for a few more
years. I couldn’t be any more

Nadal opens bid for 12th French
Open title against qualifier
PARIS — Rafael Nadal will start his cam-
paign for a record-extending 12th title at the
French Open against a qualifier. And if he
makes it to the second round of the clay-
court Grand Slam, another qualifier will be
waiting.

No-brainers, snubs for All-NBA teams

NEW YORK — Giannis Antetokounmpo and James
Harden got the most votes, and Damian Lillard and Kemba
Walker were also big winners when the All-NBA teams were
announced.
Those guards can cash in with supermax contracts based
on their selections to one of the three All-NBA teams that
were announced Thursday.
LeBron James also was voted to the third team, tying the
NBA record with his 15th All-NBA selection.
Rounding out the first team were Stephen Curry, Paul
George and Nikola Jokic, who was Denver’s first All-NBA
selection since Carmelo Anthony in 2010.
Antetokounmpo and Harden were unanimous selections,
receiving all 100 votes from a panel of sports writers and
broadcasters who had to choose two guards, two forwards for
each of the three teams.
Walker was the final selection but all that matters is that
he made it. By doing so, he became eligible to receive a
five-year contract extension worth about $221 million
from the Hornets if he opts to stay in Charlotte, a reward the
NBA put in recently as further incentive to keep players
with their current teams.
The Hornets could have offered him about $30 million
less if he wasn’t selected and failed to earn the criteria for
the largest possible contract.
Lillard, a second-team selection, can get more than $190
million over four years with a new contract in Portland.
Golden State’s Klay Thompson, Washington’s Bradley
Beal and Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns were also in
position to cash in with those lucrative extensions, but
none was an All-NBA selection.
James has been a lock for most of his career, but was no
sure thing after an injury-shortened first season in Los

Thursday outlined proposals to the White
House that would send military reinforce-
ments to the Middle East to beef up defenses
against Iran amid heightened tensions in

Having known Kelly for some 42 years,
longtime friend and former Foster City
mayor Pam Frisella remembered well his
ability to cultivate relationships in the
community and his focus on ensuring every-
one has an equal chance to live in San Mateo
County. Starting with a vow of poverty
when he joined the priesthood at age 13 and
extending into his later years well after he
left the priesthood in 1979, Kelly’s simple,
no-frills life set an example for many and
attracted others to join him in his work at
Samaritan House, said Frisella.
“He just was very, very respected and
loved by everybody because he never had an
agenda to help anybody except those in
need,” she said.
Frisella said she met Kelly in 1977 when
he presided over the funeral of her late hus-
band, who Kelly had taught when her hus-
band was a student at Serra. She said she
bonded with Kelly, who was then a pastor at
St. Mark’s Church in Belmont, over the
tragedy, and Kelly baptized her second son
two months after her husband’s death, even-
tually becoming a fixture in the family.
Some two years after they met, Kelly left
the priesthood out of frustrations with the
bureaucracy of the Catholic Church, said
Frisella, who noted he spent a few years
doing part-time work before he and a few
others in the community started Samaritan
House. Frisella said she joined Kelly in
many of his endeavors, including working
at Samaritan House for five years, and saw
him engage with the community to raise
funds for the nonprofit as well as recruit

volunteers to carry out its food, clothing
and medical programs.

Bart Charlow, Samaritan House’s CEO,
said Kelly served as executive director for
Samaritan House from 1985 to 1999 and
expanded the number of services the non-
profit offers to include an emergency shelter
for the homeless, a kids’ clothing drive and
a series of programs during the holidays,
among others. Charlow described Kelly as a
magnet for those who wanted to help others
and as someone who showed people who
didn’t think they knew how to help how to
do good things in the community, noting
almost every individual and agency John
interacted with remembered him.
Charlow credited Kelly with instilling in
the Samaritan House culture a sense that
people are at the center of the nonprofit’s
work, adding the nonprofit’s employees
strive to ensure their services involve face-
to-face interactions and a tailored approach.
“He was an incredibly dedicated and giv-
ing person,” he said. “He had a very strong
feeling for the value of people, no matter
where you found them.”
Kitty Lopez, who served as the nonprof-
it’s executive director from 2002 to 2013,
said Kelly’s commitment to sharing what
you have with others sent a simple message
to the community, one she felt seemed more
important today than it ever has. She noted
Kelly was well-known by so many in the
community as an educator and leader of
Samaritan House, and said Kelly always
impressed upon her the importance of
engaging people in helping each other.
“John always just had a belief of going to
the community and asking for help and ask-
ing to get people involved,” she said. “I
think through that act, it widens the mes-
sage.”
Frisella believed Kelly’s experience with
leading retreats as a priest may have played
a role in his decision to mentor prison
inmates at San Quentin State Prison after he
finished his work at Samaritan House. In the
hopes of connecting with some of the most
marginalized members of society, Kelly
traveled to the prison two or three times a
week to spend time with the inmates, many
of whom he stayed in touch with after their
release, she said.
Kelly’s nephew Patrick Kelly said he
joined his uncle on trips to the prison and
saw him listen to, challenge and engage
with people on their most human level. He
said his uncle never gave up on people, no
matter what their circumstances were or
what they did previously in their lives.
Patrick Kelly remembered his uncle relished
taking him and his siblings to do fun activ-
ities when he was young, and said his
uncle’s dedication to issues of social justice
— such as voting and labor rights in the
midst of the civil rights movement — was
also apparent to him at an early age.
Patrick Kelly said his uncle’s commit-
ment to others was also evident in the many
acts of kindness supporting him in his last
few months of life, when friends, former
coworkers and those whose lives were
affected by his work came together to care

for him and visit.
“To us, he’s our uncle,” he said. “To oth-
ers, you could just really see how he’s made
a difference in their lives.”
Kelly’s teaching
For Father Joe Bradley, a 1973 Serra grad-
uate, it was Kelly’s teaching that made the
biggest impression. Having had Kelly as a
teacher for two classes and as a counselor
for his four years in high school, Bradley
had several opportunities to observe
Kelly’s unique teaching approach. He
remembered times when Kelly would walk
into a classroom with no book or notes and
ask his students what Jesus might think of
any number of current events, whether it
was an execution in another state or the
Vietnam War.
Bradley believed Kelly played a role in
his decision to become a priest, noting he
made religion class feel true to life and
found a way to bring his students into an
awareness of those less fortunate than them.
Now a chaplain for the Serra football pro-
gram, Bradley said he often thinks about
Kelly’s example when he gives homilies or
engages with students at football games,
noting Kelly was ever-present at Serra
sports games.
“The person you saw in the classroom was
the same person on the sidelines, was the
same person walking around school,” he
said. “He was just very real and very humble
and he made us think … I always respected
him for that.”
Frisella said many individuals who felt
Kelly’s generosity supported him in his
later years, which allowed him to continue
living in San Mateo, near his birthplace of
San Francisco. She said he was forever
proud he walked across the Golden Gate
Bridge the day it opened to the public, and
was an avid sports and Jeopardy fan
throughout his life.
“He’s just one of the very few people that
I’ve known in my life that I would have fol-
lowed anywhere,” she said.

Get your grill ready for summer By Katie Workman

There are die-hard grillers who don’t see
why a little cold or sleet should stand
between them and a juicy grilled steak. The
rest of us in colder climes throw a cover over
our grills for the winter and wheel them into
a garage or storage spot, wheeling them out
months later as the mercury climbs back up.
None of us, however, can assume that last
year’s grill is ready to roll as soon as we fire
it up.
What to do to get your grill ready for serv-
ice again:
A THOROUGH ONCE OVER
Look for signs of rust or cracks in the
metal or grill lines. It’s also possible that
little critters may have found their way into
the grill, and need removing. Get the least
squeamish person in the family to do that.
WIPE DOWN THE OUTSIDE
Amanda Haas, a cookbook author who
works with Traeger Grills, says: “Lots of
grills are covered in grease, dust, and pollen
when you lift that cover after a long winter
of hibernation, so give the outside a thor-
ough scrub down. Keeping it clean will
extend the life of the grill and help prevent
accidents due to sticky or greasy surfaces.”
You probably can get away with warm
soapy water, but there are also products for
cleaning specific kinds of grills.
DON’T FORGET THE INSIDE OF THE LID
None of us can assume that last year’s grill is ready to roll as soon as we fire it up.
Whether you use gas or another type of
grill, the inside of the lid will likely have
buildup from the previous year. Not only
does it look gross, it also can be a fire haz-
ard. Use a strong brush, possibly the same
kind you use to clean the grill grates, or

maybe a nylon brush, depending on the grill
material. Personally, I don’t care about
scratches inside the lid of my grill — I’m
just happy when it’s clean.
A paint scraper is also handy for cleaning
out built-up gunk.
CLEAN THE INSIDE
Do all of the following with the gas off, if
applicable.
Clean the “flame tamers,” right over the
gas burners underneath the metal grilling
grates. A skewer, toothpick or paper clip are
good for making sure all the little holes in
the burners are open and unclogged. There
are also tiny wire brushes made for this pur-
pose. Later, when you test the grill, peek to
see if any holes are still clogged. Then,
once the gas is off again, give those open-
ings an extra go-over.
Empty the grill of all ash and debris from
the previous year (remove the grate to do
this).
Make sure that grease pan is empty!
Ideally, you would have emptied it at the end
of last season, but in case you forgot, this is
a big one, as grease fires are a hazard. Check
this about once a week if you grill regularly.
CHECK THE FUEL LINE
One insider tip for making sure your gas
line is uncompromised is to brush the out-
side of the gas tubes with soapy water and
then run the gas. If you see any bubbles
along the tubes, there are leaks and the tubes
need to be replaced. If you see bubbles where
the tubes connect into the grill or gas tank,
these might just need tightening.

Ritchie, who directs and is a co-screen-
writer alongside John August, has basically
taken the 1992 film’s structure, added ele-
ments from the Broadway musical and made
some nice script tweaks, most impressive-
ly by adding a second love story and updat-
ing Princess Jasmine from pretty eyewit-
ness to fierce participant. The script also
doubles down on the notion that everyone
seems trapped in roles they are born into.
Mena Massoud gamely plays the title
character, a street urchin with good hair
who falls for the free-spirited princess
and has his life changed with one rub of a
magic lamp. Naomi Scott is the princess
and she is a worthy Disney heroine for
2019 — funny, strong, brave and with a

kick off your grilling with a beautiful clean
grill and beautiful clean grill marks on your
food. For a gas grill, turn all the burners to
high, shut the lid and let the grill heat for 15
minutes. Open the lid and hopefully every-
thing stuck to the grill will have burned off.
Then, just give it a good scrub with a grill
brush or grill scraper. Make sure no bristles
get stuck on the grill rack. A wadded-up
piece of foil held with tongs also does a
good job. You can give the clean grate a
light brush with oil while it awaits your
next grilling session.
Haas advises, “If it’s been awhile since
you’ve cleaned your grill grates, remove

prince. Choreographer Jamal Sims com-
bines hip-hop and Bollywood in glorious
mashups.
But the production design by Gemma
Jackson is pure Middle Eastern-South Asian
kitsch — complete with the expected food
stalls, crumbling walls and constant bustle.
(Let’s face it, all vaguely Middle Eastern

STOCK UP ON FUEL
If you need a new tank of fuel, go grab it
before you marinate those chops (and con-
sider a backup tank so you never get caught
short in the middle of a fleet of sausages.)
If briquets, wood or pellets are your fuel of
choice, lay in a supply of those. Jay Buzaid,
owner of Powerhouse Appliances in New
Milford, Connecticut, says that if you use
hardwood charcoal or pellets, then take a
close look at any unused fuel from the pre-
vious year. If there’s any mold, it all needs
to be tossed. If it’s clean and dry, use it.
“In the summer, extreme temperature fluc-
tuations from hot to cold cause moisture to
build up, and sometimes the hardwood pel-
urban scenes haven’t changed much since
“Raiders of the Lost Ark.”) And a real stum-
ble is made in the Cave of Wonders, which
is horribly under-realized — it looks like a
cat threw up gold coins and rubies.
Marwan Kenzari is a younger Jafar than
we are used to but he’s evidently been told
to go full-psychotic by the end, including
screaming like he’s in “The Wrath of Khan”
as thunder roars and his eyes bulge. Even
so, he now has a backstory and some nice
lines, including “Steal an apple, you’re a
thief. Steal a kingdom, you’re a states-
man.”
Smith’s Genie is a martini-drinking,
yoga-posing, needy showoff with a top
knot and an armful of popular culture refer-
ences (“The crowd goes wild!” he says).
When he’s blue, he’s purely a visual effect
and trying too hard to be the late Robin
Williams. When he’s normal, he’s Smith —
and better. A scene in which the Genie tries
to help the tongue-tied Aladdin at court is
Smith at his funniest in years.
But everywhere else you feel a restless
Ritchie. He has fallen in love with making
lets and charcoal get wet from condensation
— especially if the grill is in the sun,” he
says.
He tells customers that wet hardwood
charcoal can be dried out, but he recom-
mends tossing wet pellets. Regular grill use
can help prevent this problem, and he also
suggests storing pellets in the manufactur-
er’s bag, which is designed to help them
stay dry.
FIND A SAFE PLACE
If possible, your grill should be at least
10 feet from your house, and not near an
open window. It should be situated on a fire-
proof and stable surface like concrete or
brick, if possible. Make sure it’s some-
where you can monitor at all times when the
grill is going. And make sure there isn’t an
overhang, to prevent fire or carbon monox-
ide buildup.

things explode in a burst of sand. He breaks
the fourth wall in one moment and never
returns. He creates an abrupt, out-of-left-
field fantasy sequence for “Speechless” and
never repeats it. He is very good at action
— and even mocks the art form when he
makes a pile of spice shudder as something
massive approaches, like in “Jurassic Park”
— but can’t decide on a consistent visual
style. He seems bored by quiet moments.
Even his romantic “A Whole New World”
carpet ride — a slam dunk for any filmmak-
er — is made somehow harrowing.
The film’s lurch from one direction to the
next is capped off by a disastrous remix of
“Friend Like Me” that plays over the end
credits, with Smith resurrecting his ’90s
friendly rapper while DJ Khaled keeps
screaming “Another one!” Again, Menken,
Pasek and Paul — some of our greatest the-
atrical songwriters — are on deck here. It’s
the last of many clumsy touches, but not in
a charming way.
“Aladdin,” a Disney release, is rated PG
for “some action/peril.” Running time: 128
minutes. Two stars out of four.

The issue has spawned emotional

Law enforcement officials did not
explain their decision. But a revised
version of the bill filed Thursday drops
an explicit definition of “necessary”
that was in the original. The deleted
language said officers could open fire
when there is “no reasonable alterna-
tive.”
The amended measure also makes
clear that officers are not required to
retreat or back down in the face of a
suspect’s resistance and officers don’t
lose their right to self-defense if they
use “objectively reasonable force.”
Amendments also strip out a specific
requirement that officers try to de-esca-
late confrontations before using dead-
ly force but allow the courts to consid-

Florida, police officer Seth Stoughton
called it a significant change to current
state law.
The revised bill “does a better job
than any law that I’m aware of in defin-
ing what is an imminent threat,” he
said.
“It doesn’t do everything the origi-
nal bill had in it, but it brings
the flavor just right.
“We have 16 Puremade flavors so far
and people really enjoy them,” said
Romina Cimet, senior food scientist.
“Sometimes we develop a flavor that
is ahead of its time, like the balsamic
fig, and it doesn’t do as well in the
market until much later,” she said.
One example of this initiative fla-
voring that was ahead of its time is the
Torani Chicken ’n’ Waffles syrup
which debuted in 2012. “For the
Chicken ’n’ Waffles syrup we visited
four or five places in the city that
serve chicken and waffles, then we
measure which one we thought was the
best, how cakey the waffle is, how
sugary the maple syrup tastes, and go
from there, ” Cooper-Dent said,
although she admits it was one of her
least favorites after the development
began.
This process of testing flavors is
dubbed the “Gold Standard of Tasting
Profiles” where a team of Torani scien-
tists and flavor masters taste a variety
of a flavor to master the perfect syrup
imitation. This process also explores
how one flavor may taste differently
based on location.

ment officers and the California
Statewide Law Enforcement
Association all also withdrew their
opposition.
Law enforcement organizations are
backing a related Senate measure that
would require that every officer be
trained in ways to avoid opening fire.

research involved in food and flavor

We have a lot of awesome opportu-
nities involving the staff and their
families where we take them on trips,
most recently we took them to our new
location in San Leandro so they can be
involved every step of the way,” said
Cooper-Dent.

from family-oriented ones such as its annu-
al Eggstravaganza to cultural events like the
Autumn Moon Festival, among others, said
Deputy City Manager Kathy Kleinbaum. In
addition to music concerts and movie nights
in Central Park, the city has also taken on
volunteer-driven events such as the annual
Bayfront Cleanup, which Kleinbaum said
has drawn up to 1,000 participants in the
past.
Up for review at a City Council study ses-
sion Monday was a proposal to offer four
evening events on a block of South B Street
in September, a plan crafted in response to
the council’s interest in hosting more
events downtown. Though councilmembers
voiced concerns about attendance at the
events if they are held on Thursday nights as
proposed, they largely welcomed the idea of
bringing the community together at a time
when the city will be celebrating its 125th
anniversary.
Aimed at attracting families and down-
town workers, staff proposed the four

events be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on
Thursdays on South B Street between
Second and Third avenues. Live performanc-
es, such as dance, trivia or comedy sets,
could be held on a stage set up on the north
side of the street, while a children’s play
area with face painting, a bouncy house and
climbing wall would be positioned on the
north end of the street, according to a staff
report.
In considering the events the city has
hosted and could accommodate in the future,
Councilman Eric Rodriguez wondered
whether the city could include councilmem-
bers and residents in the process of review-
ing proposals for large-scale ones.
Rodriguez hoped input from a group of city
officials, residents and members of the
city’s business community could help shape
a vision for the slate of events the city
hosts throughout the year and evaluate
whether they are a success.
“One of our biggest goals is to build com-
munity and there’s different components of
the community … there’s families, there’s
seniors, there’s the tech workers in down-
town,” said Rodriguez, according to a video
of the meeting. “I would really like to see a
vision … where we’re trying to check all
those boxes at least once, maybe twice …

so when we’re looking at our events we are
comprehensive.”
Kleinbaum explained an interdepartmen-
tal team of staff members from the city’s
Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Fire
and Police departments as well as staff from
the City Manager’s Office currently reviews
applications for events proposed in the
city. Though Rodriguez acknowledged the
current committee focuses on event logis-
tics, he and other councilmembers voiced
support for exploring how councilmembers
and community members can be included in
the process, which Rodriguez thought could
also help with spreading the word.
Rodriguez also wondered whether the city
could explore partnerships with community
organizations to host events, noting he’s
felt some could be improved in partnership
with community-based or cultural groups.

attract residents of all ages. Acknowledging
the Thursday night events would be a school
night for students and could also be tough
for residents to get to after a long day of
work, Councilman Rick Bonilla advocated
for officials to focus in on what types of
activities would draw the biggest crowd.
“It has to be something that really catch-
es the modern interest of people,” he said.
Mayor Diane Papan supported engaging
downtown restaurants in the plans, which
could entail restaurants providing a special
take-out menu for the evening, and also felt
interactive activities like a dance lesson or
trivia night could be successful. At
Rodriguez’s suggestion, councilmembers
also agreed an featuring San Mateo’s 125-
year history would be fitting as a theme for
one of the fall events.
Kleinbaum also noted that while the city
budgets $50,000 annually to support com-
munity events, their costs can add up quick-
ly, which will also be a factor as officials
consider whether they are viable. Exploring
whether the city can secure sponsorships
and documenting how much staff time is
spent working on the events already on the
city’s schedule were among the ideas coun-
cilmembers supported in an effort to moni-
tor costs.
