Introduction
The B.A. (Honours) Bengali programme has been designed adopting the latest Literature
and Language Teaching methodologies adopted across the world in order to enable
learners to attain the required language competency levels and the competency to
understand literature critically. Each module aims at imparting specific critical ability as
well as life skills that would help learners to develop their ability to use the language in
critical and domain specific modes, and use the critical approach adopted in literary
studies. The curriculum intends to integrate critical thinking and critical writing in the
class rooms with the help of concrete tasks and project based collaborative teaching-
learning.
Learning Outcome based approach to Curriculum Planning >> Nature and extent of the
B.Sc/B.A./B.Com Programme
The B.A. (Honours) Bengali program seeks to cover these key areas of study, i.e. historical
and descriptive Study of the language; study of the language for specific purposes, such
as Film Script, Advertisement, Official Writing, Creative Writing, Translation, Journalistic
Writing, Writing for New Media etc.; study of specific areas like Manuscriptology,
Teaching Methodology etc.; study of the theories of literature and criticism; and study of
the history and important literary texts of Bengali Literature.
The Programme seeks to develop both theoretical and practical knowledge in these fields
in an interdisciplinary manner so as to develop a comprehensive understanding of the

complexities of the language and literature in the context of socio-cultural, historical and
professional specificities.

The overall aims of B.A. (Hons.) Bengali are to:
• Enable learners to understand Bengali from historical and descriptive perspectives.
• Enable learners to understand the theories of literature and literary criticism and
understand literary production critically.
• Develop the ability to apply their knowledge and linguistic skills in varied range of
creative and domain specific writings.
• Equip learners with appropriate and adequate tools to understand and analyse
various issues related to socio-political, cultural, historical and literary movements
of Bengali Literature.
• Provide learners with the knowledge to undertake further studies in Bengali or to
develop required skill sets relevant to employment, self-employment and

Qualification Description
• Ability to produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a
viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various
alternatives.
• Demonstrate understanding about history, society, culture and literature of Bengal.
• Demonstrate understanding of various approaches to the study of language and
literature.

Teaching-Learning Process
The B.A. (Hons.) Bengali programme aims to make the student proficient in the
language and literature through the transfer of knowledge in the classroom in a
collaborative mode. In the classroom this will be done through blackboard and chalk
lectures, charts, power-point presentations, and the use of audio-visual resources
that are available on the internet. An interactive mode of teaching will be used.
The student will be encouraged to participate in discussions and deliver
seminars on some topics. A problem-solving approach will be adopted wherever
suitable. The student will participate in field trips that will facilitate his/her
understanding of the practical aspects of the programme and enable the
student to gain exposure to future places/areas of employment.
Assessment Methods
The student will be assessed over the duration of the programme through different
methods. These include short objectives-type quizzes, assignments, written and oral
examinations, group discussions and presentations, problem-solving exercises, case
study presentations, seminars, preparation of reports, and presentation of reports.

(Barnanatmak Bhasabigyan : Bangla Bhasha)
Course Objectives: Language is the basis of any existing literature. To study literature, one
must know the language well beforehand and then delve into its literature. Thus, our first
paper will be the descriptive linguistics of Bengali.
Course Learning Outcomes: To study the linguistics of any particular language is not
limited to knowing the language to be able to communicate but to have vivid knowledge
of its construction, its fundamental properties, its Phonology, Morphology and sentence
syntax etc. Students will be taught the science of Bengali language which is a branch of
the discipline, i.e. Linguistics.

(Bangla Kathasahitya)
Course Objectives: The world of Bengali Fiction is growing day by day with authors
experimenting the genre with various subjects and narrative styles. Bangla Kathasahitya
dates back to the later part of nineteenth century. This paper will focus the development
of this genre through reading of some Bengali Novels and Short stories.
Course Learning Outcomes: Students who have just passed the 12th standard examination
will be introduced to the abundance of their literature and they will be expected to know
after going through this paper that studying literature is not only to read some novels
and stories but they have to inculcate the habit of working and research of the given
literature. Students will be able to study the development of their society and culture
through literature.

Course Objectives: The whole range of literary creations in Bangla cannot be searched and
studied in detail by any student of Bengali Literature in 3-years of UG course. A history
of Literature, thus, is a holistic approach towards the development of the literature. This
paper will discuss the old (ancient) and medieval period literature.
Course Learning Outcomes: It is impossible for a student of literature to know the vast
number of written-literature intricately in a particular language. History of Literature will
let the students know and study about the outline of Bengali literature and its
development time to time with special reference to its background.

Course Objectives: Bengali language, in Indian literature, can be traced back in the 8th–
10th century AD. Charyapada, which is a collection of a bunch of mystical poems written
by some Buddhist monks of Mahayana Buddhism, where Bengali can be traced with some

other languages (Purvi-Magdhi group) in that period. There are other instances of Bengali
too during this period. Starting a thousand of years ago, Bengali has been grown into a
modern Indian language of today. A student of Bengali must know that the language has
changed time to time to become today’s Bangla.
Course Learning Outcomes: After studying this paper students will know the historical
development of the Indo-European Group of Languages. Students will be able to
understand the development of Bengali language through various phases, development of

Course Objectives: Bengali Literature in the 19th Century had seen a scintillating outburst

Course Objectives: This paper is a special one which must be studied by every student of
Indian Literature because this paper talks about the Indian theory of Literature based on
early Indian Poetry. The principles and methods we use in literature, are told by theorists
of literature. Theories like Alamkara, Riti, Dhvani, Rasa etc. can guide one towards what
is literature and what is not. Also, a knowledge of Bengali Prosody and Rhetoric will add
to the learning.
Course Learning Outcomes: After studying this paper, students will be equipped with the
theories of Literature that grew in India in ancient times. They will learn about the

Course Objectives: Bengali stage came into being much before British came to India but
the 19th century saw an all-round development of Bengali Theatre. 19th century Bengal
had seen great social changes due to the change in political scenario which led to the
evolution of a very big number of farces based on social issues and a number of Plays.
This continued in the following centuries too. Plays had a great influence in the Bengali
society and culture. In the following paper we would let the students know about some of
the masterpieces of Plays and Farces, starting from the 19th century.
Course Learning Outcomes: After going through this paper, the students will be knowing
the evolution of Bengali Stage, its development, the people who were related in the
progress and expansion of Bengali Theatre. They will be familiar with some of the

Course Objectives: Bengali folk Literature is an important component of Bengali Literature.

ages. Folk literature has been collected in Bengal since 19th century and now it is being
studied as a genre. In the following paper we would like our students to study this
literature and know the richness of our culture.

Course Objectives: Literature written by women in Bengali (like other languages in and
outside India) has not been treated as equal to the Literature written by their male-
counterparts since long but the feminist movements all over the world demanded the
literature written by women to be studied with care to discover issues very different from
other texts. There is a new trend (particularly after 60-s) to study these texts intensely
and work upon the language used, the issues discussed, the fear of male gaze in them etc.
Our main objective is to make the students study these kinds of Texts.
Course Learning Outcomes: While reading these Texts the students will find the arguments
interesting, substantial and strong which will lead them to understand the issues of

Course Objectives: In this paper a comparative approach is taken towards reading of texts
across languages and cultures in and outside India. In Bengali, works of Bankim Chandra
and Rabindranath can be seen holding cross-lingual and cross-cultural approach in some
of their critical essays on Literature. Later on, many critics made a comparative study of
Bengali with other Indian literatures (written in other languages) or with other Texts

which have been created in a similar context outside India. It is a very rich and popular
discipline these days.
Course Learning Outcomes: After completion of this paper, students would get a basic
knowledge of what comparative Literature is about and how it can be studied. We hope to

Course Objectives: This Course aspires to develop the students’ language skills through
Bengali popular texts enabling them to have a better grip over its nuances and helping
