Written Statement: Raleigh Bray

Enhanced interrogation is a way to get information from someone who doesn’t deserve

equal treatment. Everyone says that every person deserves the same treatment, but

would you treat someone the same who is trying to kill everyone, including your family,

in the United States? The United States has done some really bad things, but so has

every other country and that doesn’t mean we need to be destroyed. We gave these

people weapons, we trained them, we gave them education and in repayment they try

to destroy our country. No, these type of people don’t deserve “Humane” ways of

treatment, and if the only way we can get information on terrorists, then it’s the best

solution. With enhanced interrogation you get quicker results then allowing them to just

sit there and rot in jail. Osama Bin Laden was the biggest terrorist to target America and

we caught and killed him by the use of enhanced interrogation. People won’t openly

agree to this method of getting information, but no one is freaking out over a terrorist

getting put through enhanced interrogation. This people were willing to kill themselves

to kill us, and you still think they are sane? No human who would want to destroy a

bunch of people, who had no idea what the government was doing, is sane. In order to

protect the United States we use this tactic, because it is fast and efficient. Every

President had a struggle in making it illegal because it is the easiest and fastest way to
get information. This people are not donating to hospitals and hugging babies, they are

full on blowing themselves up just in spite of us. Think about it this way, if people are

willing to kill themselves, then why can’t they handle a little interrogation? These

terrorists are doing unspeakable things and people are still fighting to protect them.

These people are out to kill your friends and family and we are trying to protect them.

Dogs don’t deserve to poop in the house, don’t let these terrorists poop in our house.

interrogation-techniques

http://www.bbc.co.uk/ethics/torture/ethics/tickingbomb_1.shtml

● Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (EIT) is a form of extracting information that

is used on detainees by the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency, the

Defense of Intelligence Agency, and other various fragments of the United

States’ Armed Forces at undisclosed military defense locations around the world,

which include Bagram, Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib.

I would like to impose a hypothetical idea into your mind

● It's often illustrated by a version of the 'ticking bomb problem', which asks us to

put ourselves in the position of a senior law officer facing a situation like this:

● A terrorist group states that it has concealed a nuclear bomb in London

● The authorities have captured the leader of the group

● He says that he knows where the bomb is

● He refuses to reveal the location

● Enhanced Interrogation is guaranteed to produce the information needed to

ensure the authorities find the bomb safe

● Even the most virtuous of people are faced with this question and most of them

need to know more information in order to weigh the odds, to see if the enhanced

interrogation justifies the amount of people that it saves.

● Ask yourself, would you rather have one person who is related to a terrorist

organization, have pain inflicted on them, or have multiple people be badly

injured or possible die for an attack that you could have prevented.

Worldwide opinion

Testing the 'ticking bomb' argument

● 43% of those questioned in Israel; 42% in Iraq; 36% of Americans; and 32% in

India believe that some degree of enhanced interrogation should be allowed

because it provides information that saves innocent lives.

● In China too there is significant support - 37% for

● There are many cases where torture was very successful, including the mission

to raid Osama BIn Laden’s compound and the Lyman Ferris case. In both of

these cases, future injuries to civilians were minimized. Following both of these
enhanced interrogations we caught and neutralize the terrorist target, and fulfilled

our mission.

● There are many terrorist attacks that were fatal and if we would have found

someone who was related to these attacks prior to them, we would have been

able to use these tactics which would significantly reduce the death toll.

- Bombing at a restaurant frequented by U.S. soldiers, killed 18 Spaniards and

injured 82 people.

- bomb exploded in basement garage of World Trade Center, killing 6 and injuring

at least 1,040 others.

- Abdulhakim Muhammad, a Muslim convert from Memphis, Tennessee, is

charged with shooting two soldiers outside a military recruiting center. One is

killed and the other is wounded.

- 9/11 At the World Trade Center 2,753 people were killed when terrorist hijacked

American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were intentionally

crashed into the north and south towers

- Fourteen people are killed and more than 20 wounded when two people open fire

at a holiday party at the Inland Regional Center, a service facility for people with

disabilities and special needs in San Bernardino, California.Officials say the

attack was terrorism related. It is the worst mass shooting in the United States

since 26 people were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary, while the couple was not

working with ISIS directly, their actions were inspired by the Islamic State.

● I know you all would prefer to live in a country where you don't need to worry

about a shooter walking into your place of business and opening fire on you and
your co-workers, or in the future sending your kids to school and a bomb going

off in the lunchroom while all the elementary schoolers are eating.

The most successful terrorism mission we pursued with the help of enhanced

interrogation was when we used it on Abu Ahmed al- Kuwaiti to capture and kill Osama

Bin Laden. The CIA was letting congress know that their interrogation program had led

them to a secret courier. Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti led the CIA to the doorstep of the

world’s most wanted terrorist. Even before the mission to kill Bin Laden in Pakistan in

2011, the CIA had planned to cite the manhunt as proof of the effectiveness of

techniques that President Barack Obama later described as “ torture”.

Waterboarding and other enhanced interrogation processes allow the United

States government to obtain information and prepare/prevent future terrorist attacks.

For example; waterboarding has been proven to successfully obtain information on

future terrorist attacks. "I can tell you that the enhanced interrogation techniques that
have since been banned by this administration — specifically waterboarding — work,"

states Ted Wilcox, a former CIA officer (objecting against the Obama Administration).

Upon capturing Abu Zubaydah the Bush Administration considered him as al-Qaida’s

chief of operations, he was waterboarded a number of times, which forced Zubaydah to

surrender the planned terrorist attacks on numerous shopping malls, nuclear power

plants, and the Brooklyn Bridge. 125,000 motor vehicles cross the brooklyn bridge per

day, which means that because of advanced interrogation an event was stopped that

could have been the highest terror death toll in american history.

The Iyman Faris case is an example why torture should be justified. In an attempt to
tear up the Brooklyn Bridge by cutting its suspension cables, fortunately this terrorist
attack was prevented by the C.I.A officials; How was this prevented? You might be
wondering… After going through the list of suspects of possible Al Qaeda members,
and one of them was identified as a member of this terrorist group, Majid Khan, was the
member, which by being tortured led the officials to Iyman Faris, he had been identified
as an Al Qaeda member, but he was not recognized by Majid at first, once Faris was
identified, this led to them figuring out about his terrorist attack. Iyman Faris served as a
double agent for the FBI before he was found guilty of attempting to destroy the
Brooklyn Bridge. The whole Brooklyn Bridge incident is part of a ticking bomb problem, if
you knew that there was a bridge about to be blown up, you would do anything possible
to try to stop it from blowing up and save all those innocent people, but how do you stop
this from happening, there aren’t many choices especially under pressure and knowing
that the bridge could blow up at any time, if you have one of the possible suspects the
most reasonable method would be torturing him, and make it as painful as possible so
that he would give you all of the information you need.

Counter Claims:

CC #1 Noime Gavarra (trials can’t be performed if torture happens)

It is said that trials can’t be performed if torture in performed, but really do we need a

trial? We know these people are guilty and if we can get more information through

torture than through trial then why even perform a trial? These people do not deserve

the same rights as everyone else because one they aren’t U.S. citizens, and two they

are mass killers. These people are proven guilty through the trials of enhanced

interrogation, so we wouldn’t even need a trial to prove that. These people do not

deserve to be in jail, because even in jail people are still mainly treated humanely, and

terrorists don’t deserve that treatment. Being punished in a legal way is an easy way out

for the terrorists and if they were going to kill themselves to kill us, then that proves how

physcotic they are. Enhanced interrogation may not be the most humane way to deal

with this issue, but it is protecting our country from death and destruction.

(Michael Rendon) CC #2 (truth is not guaranteed, and prisoners will say anything

to stop pain)

While it might seem true that people will say anything to make the pain stop even if its

false information, however that’s similar with saying the trickle down economy theory.

Reason being is that it sounds reasonable and correct, but was later proven wrong.

Same with getting false information for torturing terrorist, as it’s proven to disrupt attacks

on the U.S.. It also allows to better understand the enemy. Therefore interrogating the

enemy will get us information to prevent catastrophic attacks and save lives.
(Javyan) CC #3 (inhumane by nature and besieged american values, in

conjunction in being illegal under US and international law)

The thing is America lost most of its values when we started to invade countries. There

wasn’t much american values left after, and enhanced interrogation didn’t go against

that because one they are mass killers and two they aren’t citizens. You need to

remember what these people are doing. On September 11th, 2001 was a terrorist attack

on New York led by Osama Bin Laden. 2,977 victims were dead and 19 of the terrorist

killed themselves for the cause. Who in their right mind would kill themselves by driving

into the biggest business center in America to kill a bunch of innocent people who they

didn’t even know one of the victims names. If we didn’t perform enhanced interrogation

on Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti, then Osama Bin Laden would still be wandering the Earth

and killing more and more U.S. citizens. So really it doesn’t go against our values,

because one of our main values is to keep our country safe, and enhanced interrogation

gives us the ability to. These terrorists were going to kill themselves anyways, why not

get some information first before they die?

Closing statement (both sides

In terms of wrapping this all up I think we have all seen the different sides and I

think that both have been successful in proving the various pros and cons of enhanced

interrogation. What we are saying is that the pros significantly out weight the cons along

with the main arguments we have given they have also stated things like they don't get

a fair trial, they can give false information to make it seem as though they are complying

and we as americans abandon our values by doing this “illegally” under international

law. Again i'd like to reiterate that all of these reasons to not perform enhanced

interrogation are flawed yes a right to a trial is a law that we have in this country but it

only applies to citizens of the United States of America. Along with not being citizens
they forfeit the right to any law because they are mass murderers and they seek to harm

the civilians in our country along with other countries as well, Also in cuba methods like

torture and enhanced interrogation aren't technically prohibited. These extreme

measures are meant to prevent future attacks and to keep citizens like you and me

safe. Even with this you claim that the truth is not guaranteed because they can say

anything in order to make it seem as though they are complying to make the pain stop.

This is only an idea or a theory that americans have come up with, other theories that

we have come up with that have also been proven false on numerous occasions the

one we used was with the trickle down economics and there have been a number of

reports that enhanced interrogation has been proven to work with the case of osama bin

laden they might have gotten off of Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti but what is fail to

mentions is that in reports given by CIA told of how they were able to catch him

through enhanced interrogation. Terrorism is one of the most serious offences that can

be performed on another country and it could affect anyone of us in a catastrophic way.

So this isn't a matter of what we are doing to them, it's what they are willing to do to us

and if they are willing to kill countless of innocent people I think that it is safe to say that

a lot of us would say that sacrificing ethics to obtain information in order to apprehend a

greater threat to our lives than to let millions of people, people like those families that

were attacked during nine eleven \
