Journey Through English

English class, a class that follows you from elementary school all the way up to college. Teaches

grammar, spelling, punctuation, writing essays, and, much more. I took English 101 this semester

and I must say it was an interesting experience. This experience involved what I learned in class,

what I learned about myself as a writer, and what I wish to keep improving upon throughout my

school career and life.

My in-class experience was quite interesting to me. The class started with going over the

basics of how to write. The reason this was interesting was because of how it correlated with the

first essay we wrote. Every lesson we would go over we would use the next day in setting a

layout for our essay. What really made this a learning experience was how the professor set up

our very first essay. She broke them down into small assignments. Now this may not seem like a

big deal and some would say you could have done all of that yourself which is true it wouldn’t

be the same. The reason is that most teachers just assign a due date and say good luck this is

when the final draft is due. That was what I was expecting. I wasn’t expecting a teacher that was

willing to go step by step with every student help them in reviewing each step and continue to

give each student advice on how to improve and stay on the right track. It was all these little

thing I learned about in this amount of time that made a big impact for me and allowed me to

continue to strive and get better.

Throughout this entire class I learned a lot about myself as a writer and about where my

strengths and weaknesses lie. With the first essay assignment I came to realize one of my

weaknesses and managed to turn it into a strength. The problem was outlining, to go more in

detail it was how to outline. In the past I would think of a bunch of random topics and try and

merge it all together to try and make sense. This led to the ideas being everywhere and not

properly being laid out. With the lessons we were given I was able to make a personal strategy

when it came to outlining and was able to make leaps and bounds in my writing. I also found a

strength through this strategy, it was coming up with more and by that I mean the second I got

one or two ideas down it let the ball start rolling and I was able to keep coming up with more and

more. These new strengths allowed me to better myself as a writer and helped me get rid of some

weaknesses. This class taught me a lot about myself as a writer.

The ways to keep improving my writing skills is to use what I’ve learned in the class as

well as what I’ve learned about myself as a writer and to keep practicing them. I want to take the

lessons I have learned in this class and continue to use them, this in turn will give me better

results as well as helping me spot any corrections I should make that might have not spotted or

been able to spot in the past. These skills will be very useful for me when writing future essays

and just general things such as resumes and little side projects. This is just a repeating cycle

because by writing more while using these skills will cause me to improve which in turn will

make me write more to see how much better I have gotten.

This was the experience that involved what I learned in class, about myself and my

writing skills, and what I wish to keep improving throughout the rest of my school career and

life. All these ideas and lessons are what gave me such an interesting experience In my English

101 class.
