Scalable, flexible and open
Scalability and openness are the two
concepts which best define the SattGraph®
5000 SCADA system. Scalable in the sense
that it is easy to expand to a more complex
level without having to change system or
make a major, budget-crippling invest-
ment; open in that SattGraph® 5000 is fully
compatible with established software
standards.

This makes for a system which is easy to connect to

an existing PLC system, easy to upgrade whenever
process needs change and, because of its scalability
and flexibility, inexpensive in comparison with other
less flexible systems.
SattGraph® 5000 has been selected by users
throughout Europe and is rapidly becoming an es-
tablished name in Asia and other parts of the world.
Its unique qualities and open architecture have made
it the first choice for producers in just about every
type of industrial process and field of automation,
including geographically dispersed and complex,
sensitive industrial environments.
SattGraph® 5000 is an object-oriented graphical
HMI system based on true client/server principles
which give maximum flexibility and facilitate system
growth. It permits total integration between opera-
tors, the process and the needs of management for
historical data and information. It incorporates a
redundancy system which automatically transfers
control responsibility from a malfunctioning compu-
ter to a backup system. It also operates as a secure
environment and prevents unauthorized persons
from gaining access and activating commands.
Scalability -
from single node installations
to multi-server systems
SattGraph® 5000 is one of the most scalable and flex-
ible SCADA systems on the market. In designing it,
we have followed the motto that a customer should
never have to buy more than he needs.
Several levels of complexity are available (and
more are being developed) to ensure that you obtain
a system variant that complies as closely as possible
with your process needs. If you need to expand but
require only a single operator station, then this is
possible. Similarly, if you require several new servers
or several new operator stations then this too is
possible. You do not have to buy a system whose
complexity exceeds your needs. Rather, you expand
or upgrade SattGraph® 5000 as and when your needs
dictate.
Any version of SattGraph® 5000, from the sim-
plest to the most complex, can be connected to, and
communicate with, other I/O devices - PLCs, RTUs,
controllers, etc.
Open architecture for
complete freedom of choice
SattGraph® 5000 has completely open software
architecture. We have developed communication
protocols to enable it to communicate with the most
frequently used I/O systems. This and the fact that
SattGraph® 5000 has OPC certification means that it
can be installed in any existing automation system.
SattGraph® 5000 can communicate openly with
most databases. Using an ODBC interface gives you
the freedom to use databases such as Access, SQL
Server or Oracle and access them via your own appli-
cation.
The user can easily integrate standard Windows™
packages with SattGraph® 5000.
For instance:
Microsoft Excel for handling statistics and presenting
data graphically;
Microsoft Access for producing an application-
specific report from the alarm data;
Microsoft Word for producing formula-based
“Management reports”.
A further advantage is that your existing system
can communicate freely with SattGraph® 5000 com-
ponents via COM and OLE. This enables you to
adapt SattGraph® 5000 to your existing system and
program it with whatever special functions you
require, such as performing signal filtration or
programming an alarm to ring a GSM telephone.
Object-oriented data handling
Applications in SattGraph® 5000 are built up ac-
cording to object-oriented principles of design. This
enhances the quality of the application software and
reduces the cost of programming and maintaining
the application.
The configuration database in SattGraph® 5000
contains an icon for each process object supervised
by the system. An object in the configuration data-
base consists of a number of signals each of which
corresponds to a physical I/O signal.

When creating a new pump object, for instance,
you simply create a copy of the existing pump object
which then inherits all the specifications programmed
for the original object. This saves valuable time. You
do not have to create a new pump object every time
you want to add a pump to the application.
Object-orientation is used consistently through-
out the whole SattGraph® 5000 system, from
creating a new process object to the face plate in the
process graphics which is used by the operator to
interact with the process in your plant.

OPC - an industrial
communication standard
ABB Automation is a member of the OPC
Foundation, an organization established in 1996 by
companies in the field of industrial automation.
Its purpose, in the words of its charter, is to
“develop an open and interoperable interface stand-
ard, based upon the functional requirements of
OLE/COM and DCOM technology, that will foster
greater interoperability between automation/control
applications, field systems/devices, and business/
office applications in the process control industry.”

In addition to its own communication protocols,
SattGraph® 5000 is equipped with an OPC client
which enables it to read and write process values and
exchange data with other OPC servers on the market.
History and trends
Historical data is recorded
in an archive of signal
values. SattGraph® 5000
contains systems for
recording data over short
and long periods of time. The recorded data can be
viewed in real time or historical time, and can easily
be retrieved and used in an existing administrative
system.
Historical reports can be generated for a day, a
month or a year. The report is presented in the form
of a table of signal values for different time settings.
There are no fixed limits for the number of
recorded tags or for the duration of the recording.
Secure environment
The security system in SattGraph® 5000 prevents
unauthorized users from accessing functions in the
system. An operator with predefined user-privileges
must log on before he can enter the system.
SattGraph® 5000 has a number of predefined user-
privileges, and application-specific privileges can
easily be added.
Online backup
SattGraph® 5000 is equipped with a backup manager
to facilitate the safe backup of application data.
Backup can be made manually or programmed to
run automatically daily, weekly or monthly. Backup
takes place in the background while SattGraph® 5000
is running the functions, and does not interfere with
the normal running of the system.
SattGraph® 5000 integrates your
process, management and
operators into a single system
SattGraph® 5000 is more than an operational tool
for supervising and monitoring industrial machinery
and processes. It is a means to integrating your
process, operators and management into a single
operational and information system.
Operator know-how
Function keys, library functions, menus and other
functions put the operator in direct contact with the
process. Each function can be accessed and actions
performed via point-and-click icons. The informa-
tion zoom provides the right information when it is
needed the most. If the operator has authorization
and the requisite skills, he can rectify errors and
change production parameters to prevent
unnecessary stoppages.

into SattGraph® 5000. The system
contains all the functions necessary for
reporting, communicating, planning
and compiling statistics from historical
and event data. It makes tactical inter-
ventions and communicates by various
means - telenet, radio, field buses,
Ethernet and the Internet.
Management information
SattGraph® 5000 is designed to be an
integral part of a company’s information
management system.
Its historical data can provide users
outside the control center with valuable
information on which vital business
decisions can be based. SattGraph® 5000
brings the process, operators and manage-
ment together into a single system of
total information.

Platforms should be Pentium III system >=450 Mhz.
Operator Station requires graphic interface with 1024*768

SG 5000 family SattGraph 5000 is a client-server system with multi-server

function. Some components are dedicated server or client
components, while others can be used in a server and/or
a client.
Server station, handles all communication to PLCs, keeps a
record of all real-time process values, handles event and
alarm supervision and historical recordings.
Operator station, used by a operator to access all client
functions, e.g. Process Graphics, event list, reports, history
diagrams, controller displays etc.
Combo station, a system that contains both a server and a
operator station.
