Basic Response Procedures to Fires

 Content Standard
The learners demonstrate understanding of the causes of fire and the fire
triangle.
 Performance Standard, The learners shall be able to:
Develop a family emergency preparedness plan to guide them on what to do
before, during, and after a fire incident.
 Learning Competency
The learners are able to: Apply basic response procedures during a fire incident
(DRR11/12-IIe-f-40)
 Specific Learning: At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
1. ~learn about the phases of fire;
2. apply basic response procedures during a fire incident;

 If you were inside the room, up until what time it was still
possible to put out the fire? Would you have survived if you
stayed that long inside the room?

MAKING RIGHT DECISIONS: FIGHT or FLIGHT?
TIME
There is little time!
In less than 30 seconds a
small flame can get
completely out of control
and turn into a major fire. In
minutes, a house can be
engulfed in flames.
MAKING RIGHT DECISIONS: FIGHT or FLIGHT ?
VOLUME OF FIRE
Room temperatures in a fire
can be 100 degrees at floor
level (below knee) and rise to
600 degrees at eye level.
A room can get so hot that
everything in it ignites at
once: this is called flashover.
MAKING RIGHT DECISIONS: FIGHT or FLIGHT ?
THICKNESS OF SMOKE
Inhaling harmful
smoke can inflame your lungs
and airway, causing them to
swell and block oxygen.
BASIC RESPONSE PROCEDURES
INSIDE OF A BURNING AREA
 If you see a fire, pull fire
alarms as you exit the area.
Inform other people present
in the area that there is fire.
 Once you hear the fire alarm,
evacuate to a safe area right
away.
INSIDE OF A BURNING AREA
 Touch closed door/door knob first
to check if they are warm before
opening them (Touch the door first
before the door knob) If they are
warm, do not attempt to open and
proceed to a different route.
 Confine the fire, whenever possible,
by closing doors/windows and
keeping them closed.
INSIDE OF A BURNING AREA
 If there is smoke, stay as low as
possible. Also, try to cover your nose
to prevent inhalation.

 Do not hide in washrooms/restroom.

Make sure to evacuate
IF YOU CAUGHT FIRE, ALWAYS REMEMBER
DECIDED TO FIGHT THE FIRE?
• Has someone called the fire department?
• Are there two ways to exit the area quickly and safely if I
attempt to extinguish the fire? (The first priority for you is
your safety.)
• Do I have the right type of extinguisher for the type of fire?
• Is the extinguisher large enough for the fire?
• Is the fire small and contained (like in a trash can)?
FIRE EXTINGUSHERS
 A fire extinguisher is an active fire
protection device used to extinguish
or control small fires, often in
emergency situations
