Shakespeare’s Life

William was the older brother of the Family with three younger brothers and two younger
sisters with his father as a leatherman and married Mary Arden. Shakespeare as the son of a
leading Stratford citizen almost certainly attended Stratford grammar school most likely until
he was 15. William married Anne Hathaway at the age of 18 and Anne being at the age of 26.
Anne spent the rest of her life in Stratford with their twin children and William spent
partially of his life working in London on theater then coming back home. The Shakespeare
family eventually died out and left no descendants of the family. In the London theater
Shakespeare had multiple roles as a actor, a play writer, and in time a business partner in a
major acting company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men. Prospering greatly from the company
and his writing and acting he bought the second largest house New Place. The cause of death
is unknown and there are many memorials in honor of Shakespeare and his works while he
was living.

Shakespeare’s theater

In 1576 Shakespeare was 12 years old in Stratford England. James Burbage built the first playhouses in England
since Roman times built just outside London. Like other playhouses, is was multisided with a central uncovered yard
for those who were not as wealthy as others were. Shakespeare’s company the Lord Chamberlain’s Men was one of
several to perform at the theater appearing in about 1594. A few years later, the Burbages lost the lease on the
theater and construction of a new and bigger playhouse, the globe, was built South of the Thames. The globe opened
in 1599, becoming the playhouse where audiences watched Shakespeare’s best known plays. A new theater was built
on the same site and opened in 1614. Playhouses like the globe are amazing in good weather but indoor ones can
operate year round out of the sun, wind, rain, and give an intimate setting with artificial lighting. William’s company
planned to own and operate its own indoor playhouse which was finally achieved in 1609 when the Burbages took
over London Blackfriars Theater. Audiences were charged a penny to stand in the yard being known as the
groundlings. Or two pennies for a balcony seat. Because acting was mainly a male profession the female roles were
played by males. The actors did not entirely aim to have historically accurate costumes because costumes were a
major investment to the company. The stage had little to no scenery except for objects required by the plot such as a
throne, a grave, etc. Entrances and exits were in plain view of the audience but actors could descend from “heaven”
or enter and exit from “hell”. After Shakespeare’s death theaters were demolished for building materials during the
English civil war but once the english monarchy was stable, theater returned this time with female actors this time.
Shakespeare’s performance are performed around the world

Audience Experience

Up in the gallery’s the genteries, city

merchants, and lawyers would be there because
of the amount of wealth the individuals had.
And in the pit, right in front of the stage were
the “groundlings” that paid one penny because
the theater was an open roof so they stood rain
or shine to watch the performance. The sort of
people that were down there were the
apprentices, journeymen, and tradesmen and
women stood in front of the stage to watch the
performances.

16
Actors, costumes, and staging

Everybody was involved in the plays even the groundlings where no

umbrellas were allowed so if you get spat on that would be a problem.
People felt as though they were apart of the play. There was a trapdoor
that led to the roof that represented heaven with the zodiac signs on it
and a trapdoor through the ground that represented going to hell. In the
plays during this time period the acoustics were more important. So
wherever you sat had a different sound quality so the ones with the best
sound cost the most. The round shape of the building increases the
sense of participation to the audience.
