Fort Rotterdam (Benteng Ujung Pandang as it is now called) is an Old Dutch colonial fort in
Makassar, overlooking the harbor. It is one of the top attractions in Makassar.
The current fort was built by the Dutch around the year of 1667 but the first defensive
structures consisting of a simple dirt wall were built here a century before, in 1545 by Raja
Tunipalangga. The Dutch Admiral Cornelis Speelmanconcurred the fort in 1667 and renamed it
after his birthplace, Rotterdam. Soon the fort was rebuilt with 6 meter high and 2 meters thick
walls. Inside the fort there are Dutch houses and a church. The fort became the center of Dutch
colonial power on the island of Sulawesi.
Fort Rotterdam kept its function till 1937 after which it got other functions. In the 1970s the
fort was restored and renamed to Fort (Benteng) Ujung Pandang. It is one of the best preserved
Dutch buildings in Indonesia.
Fort Rotterdam consists of five towers, four on each corner and one at the main entrance.
Inside the fort there are thirteen buildings, eleven of them were made by the Dutch and two were
built by the Japanese. The oldest building was built in 1686 and is called the Speelman's house.
The house was used by Dutch governors till mid-19th century. Currently a museum is housed
here. Other structures were used as sleeping quarters for officers, prison and warehouses. One
of the leaders of the Java war (1825 - 1830), the Indonesian National Hero Prince Diponegoro,
was imprisoned here for 26 years till his death in 1855.
Fort Rotterdam is open every day from 08:00 till 18:00 hour. The museum is open on Tuesday
to Sunday in the morning from 8:00 till 12:30 hour and the entrance fee is about Rp 7,500.
Located right in the heart of Makassar, it is not difficult to get to Fort Rotterdam. You can
take the local public transportation or pete-pete, or taxi to get to the fort. If you are happen to be

The Four Dragons

Once upon a time, there were no rivers and lakes on earth, but only the Eastern Sea, in
which lived four dragons: the Long Dragon, the Yellow Dragon, the Black Dragon and the Pearl
Dragon. While playing, the four dragons were looking down the earth seeing many people
murmured, "Please send rain quickly, God of Heaven, to give our children rice to eat. The Long
Dragon nodded suggested, "Poor them, let's go and beg the Jade Emperor for rain." Being in
charge of all the affairs in heaven on earth and in the sea, the Jade Emperor was very powerful.
He was not pleased to see the dragons rushing in. "All right. You go back first, I'll send some rain
down tomorrow."
The four dragons went happily back. But ten days passed, and not a drop of rain came
down. Seeing the vast sea, the Long Dragon said that he had an idea, "Look, is there not plenty
of water in the sea where we live? We should scoop it up and spray it towards the sky. The water
will be like rain drops and come down to save the people and their crops," said Long Dragon.
The Black Dragon and the Pearl Dragon were not to be outdone. They flew to the sea, scooped
up water in their mouths, and then flew back into the sky, where they sprayed the water out over
the earth. The four dragons flew back and forth, making the sky dark all around. Before long the
sea water became rain pouring down from the sky.
The Jade Emperor was enraged, and ordered the heavenly generals and their troops to
arrest the four dragons. Being far outnumbered, the four dragons could not defend themselves,
and they were soon arrested and brought back to the heavenly palace. "Go and get four mountains
to lay upon them so that they can never escape!" The Jade Emperor ordered the Mountain God.
The Mountain God used his magic power to make four mountains fly there, whistling in the
wind from a far, and pressed them down upon the four dragons. Imprisoned as they were, they
never regretted their actions. Determined to do good for the people forever, they turned
themselves into four rivers, which flowed past high mountains and deep valleys, crossing the
land from the west to the east and finally emptying into the sea. And so China's four great rivers
were formed -- the Heilongjian (Black Dragon) in the far north, the Huanghe (Yellow River) in
central China, the Changjiang (Yangtze, or Long River) farther south, and the Zhujiang (Pearl)
in the very far south.

Javan rhinos are the most threatened of the five rhino species, with 58-68 individuals surviving
in Ujung Kulon National Park in Java, Indonesia. Vietnam's last Javan rhino was poached in
2010. The Javan rhino is a dusky grey color and has a single horn of up to about 10 inches.
Their skin has a number of loose folds giving the appearance of armor plating. This species is
very similar in appearance to the closely-related greater one-horned rhinoceros, but has a
much smaller head and less apparent skin folds.
A foundation concerning wildlife conducts ongoing research on the Javan rhino, which
continues to reveal critical information about behavioral patterns, distribution, movement,
population size, sex ratio and genetic diversity. It also works closely with the Ujung Kulon National
Park Authority to keep track of rhino populations. In 2010, it received camera trap footage of two
Javan rhinos and two of their calves in the dense tropical rainforests of the protected area. The
videos prove that one of the world's rarest mammals are breeding. Before these camera trap
images surfaced, only twelve other Javan rhino births were recorded in the past decade.
The foundation also supports habitat management in Ujung Kulon National Park. The efforts
focus on the removal of Arenga palm, an invasive species that leaves the area barren of food for
rhinos, and support for antipoaching patrols.

The Buginese people are an ethnic group-the most numerous of the three major linguistic
and ethnic groups of South Sulawesi. They live in the southwestern province of Sulawesi, third
largest island of Indonesia. The Austronesian ancestors of the Buginese people settled on
Sulawesi around 2500 B.C.E. There is historical linguistic evidence of some late Holocene
immigration of Austronesian speakers to South Sulawesi from Taiwan. It means that the Buginese
have "possible ultimate ancestry in South China", and that as a result of this immigration.
Despite the population numbering only around 6 million, the Buginese are a very powerful
people and they have heavily influenced the politics in the present day states of Malaysia,
Indonesia and Singapore. Although many Buginese people live in the large port cities of Makassar
and Parepare, the majority are farmers who grow wet rice on the lowland plains to the north and
west of the town of Maros.
The Buginese people speak a distinct regional language in addition to Indonesian, called
Basa Ugi, Bugis or Buginese. In reality, there are several dialects, some of which are sufficiently
different from others to be considered separate languages. Buginese language belongs to the
South Sulawesi language group; other members include Makassarese language, Torajan, Mandar

A gigantic, suicidal palm tree has been discovered in Madagascar, researchers announced
today. The palm represents a genus seen nowhere else in the world--and a unique conservation
challenge for a nation with a poor environmental track record.
"This palm really is an amazing discovery," says palm biologist Scott Zona of the Fairchild
Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables, Florida. "It adds a completely new branch to the palm
family tree, something that happens very rarely." It's a spectacular find, adds research botanist
James Miller of the New York Botanical Garden in New York City. "It makes you wonder how much
we've already lost."
Xavier Metz, the French manager of a cashew plantation in remote northwestern Madagascar,
found the flowering palm while picnicking with his family 2 years ago. His photos of it eventually
made their way to John Dransfield, a palm expert at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in Richmond,
U.K. Dransfield was astonished by the palm's appearance, but he was even more surprised by a
study of its DNA: Lab tests showed that the palm was a previously unknown genus and species
within a family of palms found primarily in Afghanistan, Thailand, and southern China.
