1.1.1 Terminology
Description In this manual you will regularly encounter terms whose meanings may not be
immediately clear.
You will find a description of these terms in this section.
Terms The table below contains an overview and a description of the terms in this
manual.
Term Description
LCU or FCC-II is the process computer that controlls the milking

parlours.
Tauruskoppeling handles data exchange between an external

management package and the program STRANGKOFARM MANAGEMENT PRO.
This takes place using the fixed Taurus II protocol.
SMP handles communication between the program

Communicator programma SMP database and the process computer.
The customer must ALWAYS have SMP Communicator

active
Firebird gives the program SMP access to the database.

1.1.2 PC Requirements and Settings
Minimum To be able to work properly with the program SMP, the PC you are using
System must meet the following minimum requirements:

• Windows XP or Windows Vista
• 256 MB RAM
• Minimum 2 GB free disk space - 10 GB recommended
• Pentium III 500 MHz processor - Pentium IV 2 GHz recommended
• Network card - only for use in a client installation
• Screen settings: 800x600 pixels or

higher resolution
• Minimum 256 colours
Check Some Windows settings can cause the PC not to perform at optimum speed, or
Windows can cause problems in SMP.
Settings Always check the following settings:
• The virtual memory or swap file must always be controlled by Windows. A
fixed virtual memory can become inadequate in time, so the programs will
no longer work properly.
• The hard disks and the system must NEVER switch automatically to
Standby.
• The PC must NEVER switch automatically to Hibernate.
• The system performance must be optimised (settings such as “Show
content of window while dragging” must be disabled).
The locations of these settings differ from one operating system to the next.
The settings can usually be accessed in Display and System in the Control
Panel. You can also use Windows Help to search for the settings.

1.1.3 Installation options

Description The program has three installation options, namely:
• installation on new systems (Complete Install).
• installation on second PC (Client Install Network).
• demo-installation (Demo Install).
Complete Het SMP installation program contains the COMPLETE INSTALL option, which you
Install should use to install SMP on a new system.
Use this installation to install SMP on the management PC with an empty

database. SMP CONFIG configures a number of default settings during
installation.
Client Install You can install SMP as a client in a number of different places (e.g. in the
(Network) living room).
The client must NOT contain an SMP database. SMP COMMUNICATOR must
NOT be active on this PC. These workstations can connect to the database on
the server, which could be in the milking shed or office, for example, by means
of a network.
De Server-PC is connected with the process computer. The program SMP

Communicator ensures that the data from the process computer is saved in the
database.
IP-address of Before you begin installing the client, you must know what the IP address of the
Server server PC is.
To find the IP-address, proceed as follows:

Demo You can use the Demo installation for demonstration purposes at trade fairs or
installation for presentations to customers.
The program DEMOMAKE creates an empty database which is then filled with
data.
You can configure the number of cows, milking places and months to be
entered in the database yourself.
Taurus Link The installation of SMP (Complete Install, Client and demo) contains the
TAURUS option, which provides a link for Taurus.
The TAURUS option installs Taurus in the folder C:\TAURUS1.

This folder must be on the same hard disk as the external management
package.

Introduction The SMP installation contains 3 installation types. Each typ contains a
number of specific installation screens. However, a large part of the screens
is virtually to each other right.
This chapter contains a description of the screens that occur in all installation
types.

2.1.1 General Installation Buttons
Description The installation program contains a number of buttons that occur in almost
each installation window.
This section contains a descripton of these buttons.
Description The table below contains an overview and a description of the general

Next> saves the settings in the window and opens the next
window.
<Back scrolls back the the previous window so that you can
change the data.
Cancel stops the installation program.
Finish ends the installation program.

2.1.2 INSTALLATION DIRECTORY Window
Description In the INSTALLATION DIRECTORY window you can select the SMP installation
folder. The window shows the default location, but you can select another folder
from this window.
Default The default location is the folder C:\PROGRAM FILES\SMP.

Description In the INSTALL TYPE window you select the installation you want to execute.

Description In the ADDITIONAL OPTIONS window you check a number of additional options.
Each install type contains this window, but the contents differs per install type.

Install Taurus Handles a link between the SMP database and other extern management
programs.
This option is ONLY available when installing a COMPLETE INSTALL and a

CLIENT INSTALL (NETWORK).
• DO NOT check the INSTALL TAURUS option if the

extern management program is on another PC. A
client version of SMP, with the Taurus option
checked, must be installed on the other PC.
• To ensure that the Taurus link works properly, a
number of settings must be configured in both the
SMP package and the external management
package.
You will find instructions on how to do this in the
TAURUS LINK chapter.
Conversion Converts KMW-data to SMP-data.

2.1.5 PROGRAM FOLDER Window

Description The installation program puts all SMP program shortcuts in a program folder.
You will find this program folder name for example in the list which appears, if
you select the ALL PROGRAM option from the Windows Startmenu.
You select or enter the program folder name in the PROGRAM FOLDER window.
Default The default program folder name is SMP.

2.1.6 OVERVIEW SETTINGS Window

Description The OVERVIEW SETTINGS window shows how you configured SMP in all
previous installation windows. You can check all settings concerning from this
window and can scroll back to a window to make any changes.
Subsequently you start the effective installation from this window.

2.1.7 LANGUAGES Window
Description You select the language for all SMP programs in the LANGUAGES window. You
will see the selected language during the rest of the installation. Besides all
programs will start in the language you select in this window.
Select other The installation program does not only install the language you select in the
language in LANGUAGES window, but also all other available languages. By this you can
SMP switch the languages when working with the SMP programs.

Description You enter Name and address and other details concerning your company in the

settings in the COMMUNICATION SETTINGS window.

The window is secured with a pass word, which is only known by the installer.

Pass word Is the pass word which the installer enters, befor he checks or unchecks the
options.
CKDal Link Downloads through internet with a external animail details from the central
cattle database of the danish government.
CKDal means Central Kvæg Database link. This module is only available in
Denmark.

2.3.3 SETUP DATAGROUPS Window
Beschrijving The SETUP DATAGROUPS window shows which KMW datagroups the installation
program converts to SMP. It is also possible to convert a number of extra KMW
datagroups to SMP.
It is not obliged to convert extra extra KMW-data

groups. Besides you must take into account that the
conversion procedure takes much longer by this.

Milk data Is an optional datagroup with regard to milking details.
Activity data Is an optional datagroup with regard to activity details.

2.3.4 AUTOMATIC CONVERSION Window
Description The AUTOMATIC CONVERSION window shows the progress of the conversion
from KMW naar SMP.
Illustration The figure below shows the AUTOMATIC CONVERSION window.
Explanation The illustration show the window when the conversion has finished. The
to illustration window contains then buttons, which are not present at the beginning of the
conversion procedure.
Errors en Shows a number of errors and warnings detected during the conversion

detected by the conversion program during the conversion procedure.
You can also open this file afterwards from the location, shown on the left of this
button.
Close Closes the conversion program and continues the rest of the installation
procedure.

Beschrijving In the DEMOMAKE SMP window, you enter the number of animals, groups,
barn groups, milking parlours and months.
In a few days the demo data will disappear from the attention lists. By re-
starting the demo installation program you can generate a new demo
database with fresh data.
The more months or animals you select, the longer

2.6.1 Installing Server-PC (Complete Install)
Description This section contains a description of the installation of the STRANGKOFARM

MANAGEMENT PRO program on the Server PC.
Windows On a Windows Vista PC you have to carry out the following actions, before
Vista you start the installation:
• Enable User Account Control (UAC),
• Restart your PC.
You can find the USER ACCOUNT CONTROL setting at USER ACCOUNTS in the
CONTROL PANEL.
Starting The installation of SMP starts automatically, when you place the installation
Installation CD in the CDRom drive and closes this drive.
CD You can also start the installation yourself, if the CDRom is already present
in the CDRom drive.
In this case you start the program with the SETUP.EXE program, which you
can find in the root of the CDRom.
Steps To install SMP from the installation CD, proceed as follows:

The installation program starts automatically. You will see the

welcome window on your screen.
2 Click Next> to open the Installation directory window.
3 Specify the folder in which you want to install the SMP programs in the

5 Check the desired additional options in the ADDITIONAL OPTIONS

6 Specify the program folder name for the SMP icons in the

3.1.1 Configuring the System

Introduction SMP can only work properly with the milking robot if the program is properly
configured.
In this section you will find information on the settings you will need to check
and, if necessary, adjust.
You will find more information on the various options in the SMP User Guide.
General In the GENERAL SETTINGS tab in the main SYSTEM window, chech the
Settings settings in the following fields:

Feed reset time Enter the start time.

Detaching Select the desired detaching strategy.
Attenties The attention list settings determine which cows appear on the attention lists
instellen and which do not. Go through the settings with the user and adjust them as
required in the ATTENTION tab in the main SYSTEM window.
The most important attention list parameter is hourly production. By means of this
setting SMP calculates the expected milk production, which you can see on the
keyboard.

3.1.2 Instructing the Cattle Farmer on the Use of the

Software
Introduction Once SMP has been installed and configured, the cattle farmer can start
working it.
However, first they will need some general instructions on how to use the
package.
In this section you will find guidelines on how to instruct the customer about
the use of the package. Use the User Manual as much as possible.
Main Windows Explain the following with regard to main windows:

• the use of main windows and tabs,
• main ANIMALS window is at animal level, so any changes apply to the
animal selected.
ANIAML DATA Demontrate the following in the ANIMAL DATA tab:

Tab • use of buttons (save, change, etc.)
• entering a new animal.
MILKING Tab Explain the following with regard to the MILKING tab:
• the separation information determines whether or not the cow is separated.
• The cattle farmer has to cancel the milk separation. The system will NOT
do this automatically.
SMP Control issues an alert after X days (days are adjusted by the cattle farmer).
Tabblad Explain the following with regard to the FEEDING tab:

VOEREN • SMP activates new or adjusted feedings after the feed reset time. If this setting
is to be available immediately, the cattle farmer has to use the TRANSMIT
IMMEDIATELY button. In this case SMP will send the details immediately to the
process computer.
COW When you have entered a new cow, use this to show how the whole calendar
CALENDAR Tab works.
ILLNESS Tab Explain the following with regard to the ILLNESS tab:
■ First define the illness in the ILLNESS AND TREATMENTS tab.
■ Demonstrate how an illness is added to a cow.
■ This window is for the historical overview only.

Main SURVEYS Explain the following with regard to the main SURVEYS window:
Window • print attention list -> select the list you require and click Print (to printer or
screen).
• You can create custom reports from the REPORT GENERATOR tab. There are
some predefined reports.

used by the dealer for verification purposes.
Programma Explain the following with regard to the SMP COMMUNICATOR program:
SMP • sends and retrieves data to or from the process computer,
COMMUNICATOR • must therefore always be active.moet dus altijd actief zijn.
If SMP COMMUNICATOR is not running, the process computer will not be able to
transmit its reports. When the process computer report buffer is nearly full an
alarm (Octa) is issued.
SMP CONTROL Explain the following with regard to the SMP CONTROL program:
Program • it is a online monitor to view attention lists,
• show how the cattle farmer can create and save a list of different overviews
himself.
Shut Down If the PC is being shut down when Firebird still has one or more connections
PC with the database active, a message about this will appear. In this case the PC
MUST NOT be shut down.
Shutting the PC down now can irreparably damage the database. A program
such as SMP COMMUNICATOR may still be active.

3.2.1 General Information on Taurus
Description The Taurus link (the program TAUPRO2.EXE) links the SMP database to an
external management package like Uniform.
The external management package starts the Taurus link periodically, after
which it exchanges data between the two databases.
The user can also start the Taurus link manually from the management
package.
The user must not start Taupro2.exe by double clicking on the program
icon.
This will start the program but it will not transfer any data from or to the
external management package.
Taurus II Taurus uses the Taurus II protocol. Only data that this protocol supports is
Protocol transferred.
Invoer van The Taurus link is designed in such a way that all the data must be entered in the

3.2.2 How the Taurus Link Works
Description TAUPRO2.EXE is part of the Strangkofarm Management System.
Taupro2.exe receives data from the external management package and

processes it in the SMP database.
After it is processed, Taupro2.exe decides which data to return to the external

management package on the basis of Tau_MS.2.
Data File The data is transferred via Taurus in data files.
The following files are created during the link:

• The external management package creates the files TAU_MS.2.
• Taupro2.exe creates the files TAU_PRC.2.
Phases Data is exchanged in the following phases:

Error Errors may occur during the link. These are saved in the file ERR_PRC.2.
Messages During the link, both parties check whether the data (send by the other party) can

requirements specified in the protocol.
Required Some fields (data) in the Taurus link protocol are required for the transfer.
Fields These are:

■ Date of birth
■ Transponder number.
This data must therefore be the same in both packages so as to avoid error
messages.

3.2.3 Configuring Taurus
Introduction When the SMP installation procedure is finished, you must configure and test
Taurus.
Taupro2.ini The figure below shows the settings in the TAUPRO2.INI file.
Database The database location mus be correct. This

location location should contain the next values:
PC Value
Server PC Database fle location.
Client PC • IP address of the Server-PC,

• location database file.
ErrorReport The ERRORREPORT is defaulted to “output 0”.

Select a different output type if required.
Milk events The settings in MILKEVENT send information on milk yields to the external
management package. The milk yields transferred depend on the MODE you
select and the factor N. The default value is mode 3 with N = 2 days.

3.2.4 Dumpfile creëren

Description Taurus first has to create a dump file.
The external management package uses the dump file to specify what data
we can process and transfer.
Once the dump file has been created, our part of the Taurus installation is
finished. Afterwards you only have to complete the installation.
Illustration While the dump file is being created, the TAURUS II window opens.
Steps To create a dump file, proceed as follows:

1 Open the Windows Startmenu.
2 Click RUN.
3 Enter the following path in Open:

C:\TAURUS1\TAUPRO2.EXE /D
4 Click OK.
Taurus will start and create the dump file.
The TAURUS II window will open.
When the window is closed, the next files will be present in the
Taurus1 directory.

The dump file has now been created.

3.2.5 Completing the Taurus Installation
Installation There are three different types of Taurus installation:

Installation The methods for installation types 1 and 2 are relatively straightforward and are
Type 1 and 2 basically the same.
Installation It is quite difficult to link SMP and an external management package when
type 3 both databases already contain animal data.
This can happen if the cattle farmer decides to buy a Taurus link at a later
stage.
The two packages can only be linked correctly if the next details are the
same in both packages.

The customer must align the data in the databases themselves because they
know what animals they contain. The data can be checked and aligned if
necessary in livestock overviews.
Settings To ensure that the link between the two management packages works properly,

3 • Make a backup in SMP.
• Give it the name SMP_for_Taurus.GBK.
4 If necessary, make a backup of the external management

package as well.
5 Start the link manually via the external management package.
Select the appropriate options and data to be linked.

3.2.6 Known Taurus Problems and Facts
Introduction During installation and when the software is being used by the customer,
problems or errors may occur and the customer may have questions about the
Taurus link. These will often be caused by an incorrect setting or incorrect use.
We will provide as many answers as possible in this chapter.
Exchanging Data can only be exchanged between the two databases if they are connected.
Data when Data exchange will only happen if the Taurus link is started manually or

If the user enters the animals as calved in the external management package
today, this data will only be transferred during the automatic connection. If it has
to be transferred immediately, the customer will have to start the link themselves
manually via the external management package.
Transponder Some external management packages only transfer the animals when the

New Animals A new animal entered in SMP can be deleted from the SMP database while
connected. This is because the animal is not known in the external
management package. You should therefore always enter an animal in the
external management package and transfer it manually.
Group Number Check whether the group number is being transferred during the connection. A
Errors 0 (zero) will probably be transferred as the group number; this will not be
accepted by the Taurus protocol. (Err_PRC.2: known in Uniform). The
connection is still working !!
The SMP CONFIG program has an option to exchanges group numbers as barn
numbers.
