Prompt: The people we are surrounded by and the things we go through in life change how we
see ourselves. In the text, how do social influences and experiences shape the protagonist's
attitude towards herself? (Type your response in the space below).

The speaker's experiences at camp has changed her attitude towards herself by
teaching her to be comfortable in new situations and now feel shy. The text states “My fathers
stories made one fact abundantly clear: I did not want to go to camp” This shows that she was
nervous about the new experience and was having second thoughts about it proving that she
does not feel comfortable in new situations. The text also states “all the other kids have signed
up with at least one friend.. I have no friends” This shows us that she is shy when it comes to
socializing. In conclusion the speaker's experience at the camp changed her attitude about
herself by helping her confront her shyness and ability to talk to new people in new situations.
