Lesson Plan in Technology and Livelihood Education


Dressmaking – Grade 7

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. Identify sewing tools and equipment and their functions.
b. Classify sewing tools and equipment according to their uses.
c. Understand the use and functions of basic tools and equipment.

 MOTIVATION

Class, I have here a picture, and I want you to


observe the picture.

It’s a tailoring shop and in this kind of work,
there are basic tools and equipment they are
using in making dress.

 ACTIVITY

This time, we will be having a fun activity. Let’s


name this game “Jigsaw Puzzle”. But before I (The student will count.)
give you the mechanics of the game, please
count form one to four.

This game will test your discipline and will


practice your speed because what you are going
to do is to solve the Jigsaw Puzzle that I would
give you in just three minutes.

As soon you finished solving the puzzle, post it in


the board and put into it the highest number Yes Ma’am.

Okey. These are the basic tools and


equipment that dressmakers are using when
performing their works.

 ABSTRACTION
Basic kinds of tools and equipment

MEASURING TOOLS

1. Tape Measure – A flexible measuring


device used in taking body
measurements.

2. Rulers - a useful tool to have for


measuring and drawing straight seam
lines and cutting lines.

3. Sewing Gauge - used for measurements


at hem lines, button holes and areas
where other small measurements require
checking.

4. L-square - used to transfer measurements


to the draft pattern. It also divides the
garment into the desired measurement.

5. French curve - used to shape the depth of


the neck hole and armhole of the pattern.

CUTTING TOOLS

1. Bent-handled dressmaker’s shears -


made of quality steel and hold a sharp
cutting edge. The blades move easily and
cut smoothly along the entire length and
the points should come together.

2. Cutting scissors - used for trimmings,


clipping threads and snipping slashes.

3. Thread Clippers - specifically used to snip


threads and they are not designed to cut
fabric.
4. Seam Ripper - specifically designed for
ripping out stitches from seams, either as
a result of an error or during alterations.

MARKING TOOLS

1. Chalk Pencils/Dressmaker pencil - used


to make fine lines on fabric. It has an
erasing brush at one end.

2. Tailor’s Chalk - this is essential as a


marker for use on materials. Tailor‘s
chalk is available in a range of colors and
is removed by brushing.

3. Wax chalk - used for woolen fabrics. Wax


can be removed by pressing.

4. Dressmaker’s Carbon Paper - also called


dressmaker‘s tracing paper is a specially
waxed carbon paper that transfer‘s the
tracing wheel‘s markings to the fabric.

PINNING AND SEWING TOOL

1. Pincushion - holds the straight pins and


needles while working to prevent
accidents.

2. Hand Needle - Used in making temporary


stitches and buttonholes.

3. Sewing Needle Threader - It aids in


putting the thread to the needle.

4. Thimble - small hard pitted cup worn for


protection on the finger that pushes the
needle in sewing.

5. Sewing Machines – an equipment used in


sewing dresses.

 APPLICATION
Now that you already knew what the basic
kinds of tools and equipment are, we are
going to have a group quiz bee. The group
will be raising the numbers that corresponds
to the classification of the tools and
equipment posted on the board.
