Course Objective(s):
To acquaint the students with the construction, theory, and operation of the basic electronic devices
such as PN junction diode, Transistors and Opto-electronic devices
Course Outcome(s):
After completing this course, the student will be able to:
CO1: Explain the principles of semiconductor physics
CO2: Analyse the characteristics of p-n junction
CO3: Analyse the characteristics of MOSFET, BJT, and opto-electronic devices.
CO4: Describe the fabrication process of integrated circuits
CO5: Operate electronic equipment and hardware/software tools to analyse the characteristics of
electronic devices with an understanding of limitations and impact on environment
CO6: Communicate the technical information related to device analysis by means of reports

Unit 1: Semiconductor Physics
Review of Quantum Mechanics – Crystal lattices – energy bands – E-k diagrams – Charge carriers –
intrinsic, extrinsic semiconductors – carrier concentration – carrier drift and carrier diffusion – Hall
effect – Einstein’s relation – carrier generation and recombination – diffusion and recombination
Unit 2: P-N Junction
Basic p-n junction – equilibrium condition – forward and reverse biased junctions (steady-state) –
junction breakdowns – I-V characteristics – Small signal switching model –junction capacitances –
metal-semiconductor junctions
Unit 3: MOSFET and Nano-Electronic Devices
Basic MOS structure - MOS capacitor – C-V characteristics – MOSFET – I-V characteristics –
switching– Non-ideal effects – small signal models – FINFET structure and working – Introduction to
spintronics, quantum dots and carbon nanotubes
Unit 4: BJT and Special Devices
Bipolar Junction Transistor – I-V characteristics – Non-ideal effects – Equivalent circuits – Ebers-Moll,
Hybrid-PI Models – Switching characteristics – frequency limitations – Special devices: UJT, LED,
photodiode and solar cell;
Unit 5: Device Technology
IC definition and classification – Bulk Crystal growth – Doping techniques – Epitaxial growth –
Photolithography – Etching – Monolithic device elements fabrication – bonding and packaging
