Semi-detailed Lesson Plan

Mathematics 8

I. Objectives
Upon completion of this lesson, the students will be to:
a. Find the Least Common Denominator of rational expressions
b. Add and Subtract Rational Expressions with Different Denominator and;
c. Simplify the rational expression

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic: Addition and Subtraction with Different Denominators
b. Reference: Grade 8: Patterns and Practicalities
c. Materials: Power point Presentation

III. Procedure
A. Preparation
- Prayer
- Checking of Attendance
- Review of the past lesson
- Motivation

B. Lesson Proper

In beginning math, students usually learn how to add and subtract

whole numbers before they are taught multiplication and division. However, with
fractions and rational expressions, multiplication and division are sometimes taught first
because these operations are easier to perform than addition and subtraction it is
because as with numeric fractions that involves finding common denominator. There are
a few steps to follow when you add or subtract rational expressions with unlike
denominators.

Addition and Subtraction of Different Denominator

For any real number a, b, c and d, b ≠ 0, and d ≠ 0

𝑎 𝑐 𝑎. 𝑑 𝑏. 𝑐 𝑎𝑑 + 𝑏𝑐
+ = + =
𝑏 𝑑 𝑏. 𝑑 𝑏. 𝑑 𝑏𝑑
𝑎 𝑐 𝑎. 𝑑 𝑏. 𝑐 𝑎𝑑 − 𝑏𝑐
− = − =
𝑏 𝑑 𝑏. 𝑑 𝑏. 𝑑 𝑏𝑑

C. Generalization.

There are a few steps to follow when you add or subtract rational expressions with
unlike denominators.
1. Find the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of the unlike denominator of rational
expression and multiply it to get the LCD.
2.Write each expression using the LCD. Make sure each term has the LCD as its
denominator.
3.Add or subtract the numerators and simplify as needed.

D. Application
Group activity: (Each group must consist five members)

“WHAT’S SAUCE FOR THE GOOSE IS SAUCE FOR THE GANDER”

What does this expression mean?

To find out, write the word above the correct answer
