specifications below for details.

Performance objective
You must demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to design an
innovation system for a small business.

Assessment description
Many business leaders can explain how quality is embedded in systems
and processes. Despite its current ‘buzzword’ status, however, too few can
explain how ‘innovation’ is integrated into business systems. In fact, when
it comes to innovation, most businesses don’t know where to start!
In this assessment task, you must research and design an innovation
system that could be implemented in a range of small businesses. You will
develop a research report and deliver a presentation to your fellow
learners.
You will need to make sure that your innovation system is easy to explain,
easy to understand and easy to implement. This is important because you
will be implementing it in the next assessment task!

environment

Procedure

Part A: Research report

1. Research and develop a profile of a great innovator, include:
○ a description of the innovation/innovator
Jose Maria Reynaldo Apollo Arquiza, Ph.D. is a Filipino chemical
engineer who earned his Ph.D. in Biological and Environmental Engineering
at Cornell University, New York. He also has an MS in Chemical Engineering
from University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman and a BS in Chemical
Engineering from UP Los Banos. He placed first in the Chemical
Engineering Board Exam and us a UP Los Banos Outstanding Alumni
Awardee.

○ the type of innovation (product, process, marketing or

organisational)
Dr. Jose Maria Reynaldo Apollo Arquiza has done research on Advanced
Life Support for Human Space Exploration, with studies on energy
conservation, waste treatment, and resource recovery and contaminant
release.

○ how their innovation led to benefits for their organization

Dr. Jose Maria Reynaldo Apollo Arquiza along with his research team were
the first on record to cook by frying in Moon and Mars on the G-Force One
plane under the NASA reduced gravity program using a prototype space
galley designed and fabricated by his research team.

○ challenges and problems faced by the innovator

The result of the research was described as “a bit messy,” with oil
splatters floating away. The biggest challenge of the research was how to
control the oil splatter from travelling. But to further enhance the research,
the team placed strips of paper inside the fume hood of the galley, and
dyed the oil bright red in order to help them detect and collect splatter
patterns.

○ an explanation of how they developed the innovation with

specific reference to idea generation and idea evaluation.
Idea Generation
The idea of coming up with a homemade space food is the great idea that
Dr. Apollo Arquiza and his team had. Looking on the idea of “cooking in
space” is really rare that no one could ever imagine. But because of this
mad scientist, he created a way that spacemen (astronaut) could still enjoy
a homemade food in space rather that sticking on their normal freeze
dried space food. Based on the research alone, this can be considered as

skunk works because, this is an idea which everyone thinks that is not
possible to happen. Dr. Apollo Arquiza and his team explore the wild
possibility that even with unstable gravity you can still cook your favorite
homemade dish in space.
Idea Evaluation
Since NASA is now preparing for mission to planet Mars in 2030. Dr.
Arquiza along with his team came up with the new cooking innovation for
space missions that is significant to astronauts. The team evaluated this
idea whereas astronauts would not be able to experience some kind of
food fatigue if they are going to be on Mars for a long time. That is why
this idea was generated, ideas were combined and evaluated, a point
person was chosen to take the whole responsibility for this research,
rigorous research and multiple testing were conducted, until this research
was launched and now being used. The “a bit messy” part on the cooking
was the greatest challenge on the research. The homemade space food
idea started since 2011 and eventually became successful and was
launched on 2014.
2. Research and identify innovation system features under the following
headings (dimensions of innovation):
○ a managed innovation process
 it is the combination of non-traditional and traditional which
approaches to business strategy or it is the management of
innovation through art and science
 answers the question “How do we innovate?”.
 As for Dr. Apollo Arquiza motive on how he shall innovate,
his scheme was improving the space food into something
that astronauts could enjoy also different homemade
cooking rather than sticking on their traditional freeze dried
space food.
○ strategic alignment
 building support
 answers the question “Is everyone engaged and
supportive?”
 During the time of generating the idea of the innovation of
the space food, Dr. Apollo Arquiza and his team were all
focused in improving the space galley for their customers,
the astronauts, to really enjoy the homemade space food.
○ industry foresight
 understanding emerging trends
 answers the question “Where are we headed?”

environment

 To this point, Dr. Arquiza and his team make it to a point

that the research is some sort of lifetime that even the
astronauts will take up to months or even years in Mars.
○ consumer/customer insight
 understanding articulated and unarticulated needs
 answers the question “What do our customers wants?”
 Astronauts coming in and out of earth are the customers in
this research. Since Dr. Apollo Arquiza was already engaged
with advanced life support for human space exploration,
were he was able to be improve the waste treatment,
energy conservation, and etc in the space. His work was
not focused on that part but rather that he was able to
leverage his study where astronauts could get a taste of
homemade cooking in space.

○ core technologies and competencies

 leveraging and extending corporate assets
 answers the question, “What are our strengths?”
 The strength of the research is improving the space galley
in the manifestation of the “a bit messy” impact of the
research. And none other than that, the team also focused
on the long time use of this research where their customers
could enjoy this research for months, years, or even
lifetime.
○ organisational readiness
 the ability to take action
 answers the question, “Can we take action?”
 The strategy that Dr. Apollo Arquiza and his team
implemented is that they could come up with a product or
a process that will eventually help their customers, the
astronauts to be able to catch up with the culture of
experiencing cooking in space not just merely going with
their regular practice of taking up those freeze dried space
food.
○ disciplined implementation.
 Managing the path from inspiration to business impact
 Answers the question, “Can we get results?”
 This dimension of strategic innovation characterize the
work of Dr. Apollo Arquiza that he came up with the
methodology and experiments to finish the research in
such a way that he followed set of instructions, systems,

processes and strategies. Going through this innovation, he

captured the hearts of everyone whereas that everyone
could really enjoyed cooking even in space.
3. Research the ways that organisational and team dynamics can effect
workplace innovation systems. Explain:
○ how different approaches to management and leadership can
support or hinder innovation
○ challenges and barriers to innovation within teams and
organisations and ways of overcoming these.
Answers to this questions:
Listed below are the approaches to management and leadership that
hinders innovation as well as how to overcome this hindrance.
Empowerment and motivational drive for employees to
innovate
Internal innovation requires the support of leadership and managers
to take hold across the organization. Once employees are
empowered, they must also feel motivation to innovate. Motivation
initiatives like inventor incentive programs, contests, or even
unstructured time can help encourage employees to spend time
innovating.

Missing of an strategy for innovation

Creation of concise innovation strategy is very crucial that is why it
is in need that one must possess the direction that every step or
every idea must be taken cared of for one must not encountered
risk in the future.
Innovation is centralized to one functional group
Usually innovation is taken care of by a research team, this culture
is very known to most of the organizations, resulting to another
hindrance in the pace of innovation because every department
provides unique idea and solution to problems of customers.
Lack of collaboration and diversity
Collaboration is the key to innovation. While many organizations
understand the importance of collaboration internally, collaboration
externally can be equally important. Innovation ecosystems bring
together industry partners, customers, and even competitors to
drive innovation in the industry forward. Hiring for innovation and
subsequently building diverse teams can provide the organization’s
innovation initiatives with a wealth of ideas generated from different
perspectives.
Current product offerings are successful

environment

To be able to achieve success in a long term run, constant

innovation is the real key, even current product offerings are
successful because creating something that is needed for all will be
some sort of high key in the near future.
Customer connection
Deep customer empathy is the key to understanding changes in
demand and staying abreast of future trends; it provides the
organization with a roadmap for what problems to solve next.
Utilizing customer feedback sessions regularly can help keep your
organization tuned in to the needs of your customers.
Measuring innovation incorrectly
Measuring and benchmarking innovation is core to constantly
improving its success. However, traditional KPIs, like sales volume or
revenue, may not give your organization the best insight into
success. Instead, try measuring on the amount of new ideas
generated, percent of time spent on innovation, or the investment
value of innovation-related initiatives.
4. Develop five to ten innovation principles, based on your research.
Explain:
○ why you chose these principles
○ how you could apply and promote them in a business context.
Answer to this number
Listed below are the chosen principles based on my research
 Facts – using evidence and data
 Futures – Exploring multiple possible futures
 Problems – identifying and framing an issue
 Systems – taking a holistic view, identifying intervention points
 People – understanding people’s experience, building empathy
 Solutions – Developing and testing solutions, mapping existing
assets and solutions
I have chosen these principles because these were the key
innovative principles that Dr. Apollo Arquiza take into action and
consideration while doing his research. Facts, he might not be able
to finish the space galley if gathered data and evidences were not
sufficient.
Futures, the research was not for this time use but for the long term
use as well because he was able to come up with the idea and
putting out data that this space galley can be used for their travel on
Mars for years.

environment

Problems, the identified problem on the research was already

provided a solution to be able to cope up with business and for long
term use.
Systems, while mapping the context of this research, the team was
able to create a whole pace that this research will be successful and
be able to use as another stepping ground for advanced life support
for human exploration.
People, understanding the experience of the astronauts in space
was one of the variables that Dr. Apollo Arquiza looked unto in
developing the space galley for them, other than that he was already
creating several ways for space exploration to be successful.
5. Develop or outline at least two processes for idea generation and idea
evaluation.
Idea Generation, identify the market opportunities and technology
response on the idea.
Concept Design, evaluate and select a winning
technical/commercial concept
Concept Development, challenge the market opportunity and
analyze the technical feasibility and risks.
Prototype Construction and Development, demonstrate
commercial and technical
capability of the developed
concept.
Manufacture Design,
demonstrate production capability
and commercial sign-off of the
product and evaluating the design
in taking the quality aspects for
massive production
Production Assistance, produce
in quantity and deliver to
customers with integrity and this
is the time to audit and react on
the product.
