PREAMBLE
The potential for mineral resources is well known in Kenya. In the 8 th Development Plan (Chapter 4), by 1996
over 90% of Kenya had been geologically surveyed. A wide range of mineral deposits are found in the country.
These include: Soda Ash, Fluorspar, Barite, Gypsum, Salt, Dimension stones, Silica sand, Kisii stone
(soapstone), Manganese, Zinc, Wollastone, Graphite, Kaolin, Copper, Nickel, Chromite, Pyrite, various Clays,
rare Earth elements and Phyrochlore. Others are heavy mineral sands (Titanium and Zirconium).
The country continues to spend large sums of money in prospecting and exploration of minerals including oil.
Unfortunately the contribution of mining industry to GDP is still less than 1%, and is mainly from non-metallic
minerals. The Government has embarked on an aggressive programme to promote mineral resources
development in the country.
For mining industry to flourish there is need for the country to have a sufficient number of engineers and
geologists amongst other cadres of staff. The roles of engineering and geology are complementary. The
University of Nairobi has since 1970 been producing over 20 geology graduates each year. Today there are
over 300 geologists in the public and private sector. These are involved in producing geological maps,
evaluation of mineral deposits, prospecting and in formulating relevant laws to regulate practices in mining and
geological sectors of the economy. However in terms of mining and subsequent extraction of the minerals to
the final usable products, there is deficiency of trained personnel such as mining engineers, mineral processing
engineers and metallurgists. Currently it is estimated that there are less than 20 indigenous mining engineers, a
few of them working in the Department of Mines and Geology of the Ministry of Environment and Natural
Resources. Specifically, the Department of Mines and Geology which is responsible for the mining sector has
less than 7 mining engineers and there is a deficit of over 20 engineers. The deficit in the private sector would
be much higher.
Having identified the potential for the mineral deposits in the country and in particular the impact it is expected
to create in the targeted industrialization ranking of the country by the year 2020 and the possible accruing
benefits, having noted some of the constraints prevailing in the mining industry; and the fact that the existing
number of mining engineering personnel is unlikely to make a significant impact in the development of
mining, JKUAT is proposing to train the personnel in mining engineering and mineral processing engineering.
Apart from the specialized courses, mining and mineral processing engineering draw courses from
mathematics, basic sciences such as chemistry and physics, social and management sciences, mechanical
engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, civil engineering, surveying, environmental engineering and
architecture. Therefore by locating the proposed department within the Faculty of Engineering the investment
in terms of space, basic equipment, staffing and library materials would be greatly reduced.
The in-house training of mining and mineral processing personnel will in the long run be an economically
viable project for the country. The benefits will include saving of foreign exchange needed for training
graduates; availability of expert lecturers and professors for mining and manufacturing industry; availability of
facilities for research and; increased exploitation of the mineral resources.
Amongst the employers are the mining industry, metal working industries, universities, research institutions
and the government ministries. Opportunities also exist in the Africa region with under exploited resources.

1. INTRODUCTION
Mining engineering is basically a process of taking mineral resources from the earth in response to man’s
needs. On the other hand mineral processing engineering involves separating valuable elements of material
from unwanted waste material from the ore body or ground in which they occur in the most economic way.
The extracted mineral must then be put in a form that is more easily usable. The department intends to prepare
the graduate conversant with both mining and processing. The candidate will however, have an opportunity to
specialize in the final years of study.
In addition to the theory classes the programme will have attachment sessions when students will work in
relevant mining industries within or outside the country. The course will be accredited by the Engineers
Registration Board (ERB) for the purpose of registration as professional engineers.
2. PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
The department of mining and mineral processing engineering will be training undergraduate and postgraduate
students as well as carrying out relevant research. The following will be the main objectives:
1. To provide manpower for the development of mining industry for both the public and private
sector;
2. To provide manpower for the mineral extraction and processing industry; and
3. To provide trained manpower for the manufacturing industry in general
4. to provide relevant manpower for the sectors involved in research in mining and subsequent
processing.
