Love in The Great Gatsby
Love is the topic I choose. This topic is important to consider when discussing this novel because
throughout the whole novel there was a lot of events where “Love” was shown. First, started
with the affair of Gatsby and Daisy, were Daisy’s has an affair of Tom her husband but little do
you know Tom is also having an affair with Myrtle. This also means Myrtle is having an affair on
Wilson which is her husband. Also the topic love is important because in the whole story it was
to show the event love in Scott Fitzgerald point of how he views “women.”
● The first examples are in chapter one “white
palaces, red and white, gleaming white, they
were both in white, white dresses, white race,
white star line, white girlhood, and beautiful
white.
● In chapter two it states “ whitewashed railroad
fence, white ashen dust, feet were startling
Color white
white, white sheep turn the corner, white cake,
complexion powered milky white, white spot of
lather, white shirt-front.
● In chapter three it states “ white flannels, and
white chasms”
● The color white indicates to love in the story
because it means purity, or marriage. In the
story Daisy and Jordan wore white dresses to
show their “purity” which in my point of view
the story is being ironic, so this connects to
Daisy and Gatsby being in “love” because he is
trying to view Daisy as something pure and
sweet but she really isn’t.
● In chapter one it states “ I’ll arrange a marriage, I
had no intention of being rumored into marriage.”
● In chapter two “ neither of them can stand by the
person they’re married too., I’d get a divorce and
get married to each other right away., I married
him because I thought he was a gentleman, and
“the only crazy I was was when I married him. He
Marriage ●
borrowed somebody’s best suit to get married in..”
Marriage indicates the love in this story because
marriage is a meaning of someone really trusting
you and also to be there to love and trust you for
the rest of your life. In the story Daisy and Tom
were married and also Wilson and Myrtle are
married. So this indicates the “love” because Daisy
had an affair on Tom with Gatsby and Myrtle had
an affair on Wilson with Tom. Also Tom was very
abusive to Daisy so that’s why she went to Tom for
the “love” she so called wanted to have.
● In chapter five it states “That’s my affair.”
● In chapter six it states “It was a halt, too , in
my association with his affairs.”
● Affairs indicates the love in this story
because, yes, first an affair isn’t love but then
the person falls in love with another. In the
story Daisy and Gatsby started an affair
The kiss
once he kissed her dark shining hair.”
● The Kiss indicates love because it showed the
connection between Gatsby and Daisy. So in
the story the first kiss happened in chapter
six which they made it so “magical.” But in
chapter seven and eight again they kissed
and there was “heat” and how “lovely” it was.
Which this shows the “love” because people
who really love each other kiss also Gatsby
and Daisy were in “love” with the kiss
because just how it was described.
● In chapter nine it states “Let me know about the
funeral, to postpone the funeral until he came, the
funeral’s to-morrow, the morning of the funeral I
went up to New York to see Meyer Wolfsheim, You
were his closest friend, so I know you’ll want to
come to his funeral this afternoon, and I don’t know
how he knew about the funeral,or even his name.”
● Funeral indicates “love” in the story because at this
Funeral point it really shows how Gatsby and Daisy weren’t
really in love. In the story no one showed up to
Gatsby’s funeral besides Nick. My question is “Why
didn’t Daisy go if she loved him?” Well at this point it
shows that the “love wasn’t real” because Daisy
would’ve been one of the first ones there, so Daisy
just used Gatsby.
[Theme]: Love is blind.
A Final Word...
Dear future juniors,
Reading The Great Gatsby is a big part of your junior year there is a lot of important and
meanings behind the whole story. We read this book to understand to point of where this story
stands in the American literature and what lens the story mostly fits. The different lens that it
theme can stand in is biological, sociological, and historical which you will learn about before
reading this book. By reading this book it really improved my reading and thinkings skills
because we did not just annotate what is going on in the story, we went more into details
worked on why did the author choose a word and what it means, for example the colors and
seasons are a big one throughout the whole story. The way we annotated will honesty help you
understand a lot more and make your mind really open up about what you feel it means and
have debates with your classmates on their opinion. So make sure you read the book and
understand every little detail and it will be easy.
