COMPONENTS TO BE DESIGNED:
1. Counter weight
2. Wire rope
3. Beams
CONSIDERATIONS:
Cage weight = 1000kg
Rope weight =60 kg
Speed of cage = 40 kmph = 11.1 m/sec
Distance required to obtain the speed = 10m
Beam span = 4m
Weight to be carried = 1000kg
I.CALCULATION OF COUNTER WEIGHT:
= 1400 kg.
II.DESIGN OF ROPE
DATA:
= 1000+1000+1400
= 3400 Kg = 34000 N
= 666 m/min
1. Assume FOS as 15
2. Rope diameter :
3. Drum diameter:
D = 70× 25 = 1750 mm
= 250 mm2
5. Wire diameter:
𝑑
dw =
1.5√𝑖
25
= = 1.56 mm
1.5√114
Standard dw = 1.63 mm
7. Calculation of loads:
= 34600 N
Wa = 34600×12.3/9.81
=43382.3N
Wea = Wd+Wb+Wa
=34600+18628.5+43382.3
= 96610.7 N
Ws = 2 × Wd =69200 N
Wes = wb + ws
The max. stress is less than 1250 N/mm2 .So the selected rope is
safe for the application.
8. Working FOS:
Rope diameter = 25 mm
Number of ropes= 3

r = 15.5mm
S = 31mm
C = 18mm
