Lesson Plan in Science IV

I. Objectives
At the end of the period the pupils are expected to:
A. Define heat transfer;
B. Differentiate conduction, convection, and radition; and
C. Give examples of each type of heat transfer.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Heat transfer
B. Concepts: Heat is a form of energy associated with the motion of particles and
capable of being transmitted through solid and liquid media by conduction,
convection and through empty space by radiation. As a thermal energy, it is
transferred between bodies of different temperature.
C. Materials: Activity sheets
D. References: Lozada, Buena A. and Agusto T. Mendoza. Science for Daily Use 4.

E. Process Skills: observing, and comparing
III. Developmental Activities
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity
A. Engagement
1. Checking of If I call your name, say present. Yes, Ma'am!
Attendance

2. Word Drill I have here a Word Search. I want you

to find the words on it.

Heat, conduction,
Read the words you've found! air, cold, transfer,
radiation, liquid,
convection, solid,
hot

Ok! You will encounter these words

as we discuss our topic for today!

3. Review As you can see, there are two pair of

magnets written on the board. What do Types of Magnets!
you remember?

4. Motivation Please read the poem.

Heat
Heat is
Hotness or coldness.
It passes from,
Hot body to cold body.
Metals are good conductors
While wood, plastic are some
insulators,
Air is a bad conductor,
Include rubber too in insulators
Heat can be passed in three
ways Conduction, convection and
radiation. Conduction needs a solid
body, And convection a liquid or
gas Radiation needs no body! Sea
breeze in the day, When wind from
the sea comes to the land Land
breeze in the night, When wind from
the land goes to the sea. Very
useful Is this heat, But in summers
Do beat the heat!
B. Explore
1. Setting of Standards Remember! During the activity you
should participate, work quietly and
clean when you are done doing the
activity.
2. Grouping of Pupils I have here a box and this box are
pieces of paper that have words heat,
hot, hat and hut.
Please get one and pass to the person
next to you. Yes, Ma'am!
Has everybody holding now piece of
paper?
Now go to your respective groups.
Each group should have a reporter and
a leader.

Start!
3. Group Activity Group heat will do the activity 1 Set
A, Group hot for Activity 1 Set B,
group hat will do the group 2 and last
group hut will so the Activity 3.
C. Explain
1. Reporting Time's up!
2. Discussion

Heat Transfer
It is the process of transfer of heat
from high temperature reservoir to
low temperature reservoir.
There are three types of heat transfer
1. Conduction
It is the transfer of heat between two
solid bodies. It depends on the
difference in temperature of the hot
and cold body.
Examples of Conduction Heat
Transfer Nail and the fire of
the candle, Ma'am!

Who can give me another example of

conduction?

Correct!

It is an example of conduction
because heat transferred through
direct contact.

2. Convection
It is the transfer of heat from one
place to another by movement of
fluids.
It is usually the dominant form of heat

transfer in liquids and gases.

It involves the motion of fluids in
currents.
Warm fluid rises while cold fluid
sinks.
Example of Convection

Now, What is the blue arrow Cool liquid

represents?
How about the red arrow? Hot liquid

4. Radiation
It is the transmission of heat across
the empty space.
The heat we received from the sun is
radiant energy.

All warm objects radiate heat.

Example of Radiation Bulb, lampshade,

aircon, etc.

We said that warm objects radiate

heat. Give me a thing that radiates
heat inside your home?

All of your answers are correct!

3. Generalization Tell me the things you've learned Heat transfer is the

about our topic today. transfer of energy
from hot body to
cold body.
Conduction is a
transfer of heat in
solid objects.
Convection is a
transfer of heat in
fluids or liquids.
Radiation is a
transfer of heat in an
empty space.
D. Elaboration Let's have an activity in which you
have to apply what you've learned.
So, what we need is shoebox, roll of
aluminium foil and piece of barbecue
stick and a hot dog that I told you to Yes, Ma'am!
bring today.
Is everybody has the materials?

Listen and follow to what I am going

to say.
First, get your shoebox and cover the
inside part of the box.
Second, make a hole on both ends of
the shoebox using the sharp end of
your barbecue stick. Be careful in
doing this.
Third, insert the barbecue to the
hotdog and place it inside the
shoebox, then cover it.
The set up should be look like this.

E. Evaluation Let's see if you have learned from our

lesson. Answer the following
questions. 1. A
1. What is the direction of heat 2. C
transfer? 3. C
A. from hot to cold 4. D
B. From bottom to top 5. A
C. from cold to hot
D. from side to side
2. How is heat transferred in solid
materials?
A. Through convection
B. Through radiation
C. Through convection
D. Through vacuum
3. What happens to a liquid when
heated?
A. It remains the same.
B. It increases in volume.
C. It increases in temperature.
D. It increases its water level.
4. What may happen to a solid when it
is continuously exposed to heat?
A. It may become heavier.
B. It may decrease in volume.
C. It may expand.
D. It may melt.
5. When heat is transferred through
gases it is called...
A. Convection
B. Radiation
C. Conduction
D. Roasting
IV. Assignment Get your notebook and copy your
assignment.
Cut out pictures showing the use of
light in daily life. Paste your output on
a clean sheet of bond paper.
