Lesson Plan in Science IV

I. Objectives
At the end of the period the pupils are expected to:
A. Describe how light travels;
B. Infer the light travels in a straight line; and
C. Show through various activities that light travels in a straight line.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: The Path of Light
B. Concepts: As light does appear to travel in straight lines then light is usually
modeled as straight lines in drawings. This can sometimes be very confusing
because to make the explanatory diagrams easier to understand the light from
source is usually depicted as just coming from the top and bottom of the source
when it is in fact coming from the whole source.
C. Materials: Flashlight, illustration board ( 1/8 size) with 2 " diameter hole in the
middle, Science (LM)

flashlight. Can the light bend around No.
my hand and shine onto the wall?

Ok! Do you think that light travels in Straight line,

a straight line or curve line? Ma'am.
B. Explore
1. Setting of Standards In doing the activity, what are the Cooperate with the
things you should do? group and
participate to the
activity.
2. Grouping of Pupils Everyone please stand up!

If I will say 2, you form a group with

2 members.
When i say 3, group with 3 members.

Ok! Let's start!

4!

5! The pupils will form

a group with 5
members.
Freeze!

That will be your group now!

Each group must have a leader and
reporter.

3. Group Activity Did you have the materials that i have Yes, Ma'am!
assigned you to bring today?
Ok! Listen to my instruction.
1st, get your flashlight and aim it at a
distant wall or at the ceiling. Secretary
please takes down the observation of
your group.
2nd, ask one of your classmates to
block the light with a thick illustration
board. Record your observation.
3rd, ask your 3 group mates to hold
each of the cardboards with hole. Ask
them to stand 1 foot away from each
other.
4th, aim the flashlight at the first hole.
5th, ask your group mate who is in the
middle to misalign the cardboard he's
holding. Keep the light aimed at the
cardboards. Observe what happened.
Now, answer the following questions
written on the board on a piece of
paper. Write your answer only.

1. Did the light form a straight line 1. The light travels a

other cardboards? Why is this so? The cardboard

way.
C. Explain
1. Reporting The reporter of each group must be
ready for the presentation of your
work. Let’s start with group number
9, next is group 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and
last is group 1.
2. Discussion Let's discuss your answers.
When we aimed the flashlight on the
wall or ceiling without blocking the
light, we saw that the light travels in a
straight line.
When we blocked the light with a
thick cardboard, the light was not able
to pass through.
When the cardboards were aligned,
the light was able to pass through it.
When one of the cardboards was not
aligned, the light was blocked and
couldn't pass through it.
3. Generalization What can you say about how the light Light travels in a
travels? straight line. It can't
travel in a curve line
and pass the things
blocking it.
D. Elaboration With the same group in our activity a
while ago, draw objects that you saw
in your house or inside this classroom
that emit light. After five minutes,
say something about your work in
front of the class.
E. Evaluation Get your paper.
Write TRUE if the statement is
correct and FALSE if it is not correct.
1. Light travels in a straight line when 1. True
it passes through a single medium. 2. False
2. The light that strikes a thick 3. False
cardboard bends and find another way 4. True
to pass through it. 5. False
3. Light rays could not be blocked and
they could pass through all types of
materials since they travel on a
straight line.
4. A laser is a narrow but powerful
beam of light capable of travelling far
distances on a straight line.
5. Light can travel in a zigzag line not
in a straight line.
IV. Assignment Get your notebook and copy your
assignment.
1. Why is it not advisable to aim a toy
laser to the eyes of a person?
2. Do you think it is possible for
humans to breathe and speak at the
same time underwater without any
gadgets? Give your reasons.
