THE ENEMY

1. Why was Sadao not sent with Japanese troops that were
in war with America?
Sadao was not sent with the Japanese troops even when
the country was in war as being a renowned surgeon; he
was highly required by the old general who was under
treatment. Also, Sadao was inventing a new medicine that
was supposed to clean wounds entirely.

2. Why did Sadao plot plans to kill the American?

Sadao was a kind-hearted doctor who considered saving a
life to be his duty. Though for this reason he took the
American in his home and treated him, later Sadao plotted
plans to kill him because the American was perfectly cured
and after all, he was his enemy.

3. What was the most remarkable instruction of his

American professor Sadao had taken into his heart?
Sadao’s anatomy professor used to remind his students
that the biggest crime of a surgeon is his poor knowledge in
human anatomy. If a surgeon operates a patient without
perfect knowledge of the human body, he would be killing
the patient.

4. What were the servants’ superstitions against keeping

the American soldier at Sadao’s home?
According to servants’ superstition, first the bullet, then the
sea and finally the sharp rocks in the sea tried to kill the
soldier but he escaped all of them. Now, if Sadao
helped the man then the bullet, the sea and the rocks would
turn against him and ruin him and his family.

5. How did Hana wash he wounded man? Why did she have
to do it herself?
After untying the knotted rugs, Hana soaked a small clean
towel with hot water and washed his face and the front body
carefully. She washed the wounded American soldier
because Yumi, the children’s nurse, had refused to wash
the dirty white man s she considered him her enemy.

6. How did Dr. Sadao get rid of the enemy soldier?

Dr Sadao got rid of the enemy soldier by planning his
escape. He arranged for him a boat, food, clothes and a
flashlight (to signal). He instructed him to go to a nearby
island and wait for Korean boat to run away further.

LONG QUESTION – 120-150 WORDS

What are your views about the indifferent attitude of the

general towards the presence of the American prisoner of
war in Dr. Sadao’s house?

General was a ruthless army officer who used to beat his

wife despite his victorious battles fought for the country.
Therefore it is surprising that he didn’t report to the
authorities or send the assassins to kill the American
prisoner harboured by Dr. Sadao. In my opinion, it was
partly self absorption as he was a selfish man who was only
concerned about his senile decay and deteriorating health
and so forgot to send his private assassins to eliminate the
American prisoner. Moreover, General did have a selfish
motive as well in not reporting the presence of the white
sailor to the authorities. Dr. Sadao was indispensable to
him as he only relied upon him for his impending surgery
and by sending the assassins or reporting to the authorities
he would get Dr Sadao in trouble; resulting in a decree of
criminal charges against him. Therefore, General was a
self-seeking traitorous who neglected his duty deliberately.
