I REPORT
PROJECT NO. 92J0479
GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION
I NEW OFFSITES AND UTILITIES AREA
YANBU REFINERY
KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA
I 1.O INTRODUCTION

I This r port presents the results of geotechnical studies performed by Saudi

Arabian Dames & Moore for the New Offsites and Utilities area of Saudi Arabian
Marketing and Refining Company's (SAMAREC) Yanbu Refinery. The general
I location of the refinery area in relation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is indicated
on Plate 1 .O, Vicinity Map.

I Saudi Arabian Dames & Moore was commissioned by SAMAREC t o

undertake a programme of field testing, drilling, sampling and laboratory testing
I and to provide an engineering report with recommendations relating t o the
proposed construction. The work carried out and described in this report forms part
of a broader scope of work, specified in Saudi Arabian Dames & Moore's proposal
I No. 921-126, dated December 24, 1992. This report covers the investigation
undertaken at the New Offsites and Utilities area only. Separate reports were
earlier submitted to SAMAREC for the other t w o project areas (Debottlenecking
I and New Process Units areas). Authorisation to proceed with all the work was
received in SAMAREC's letter, reference No. CE 93/107 dated January 1, 1993.
The field work for the entire investigation commenced on February 20, 1993 and
I was completed on April 26, 1993.

We understand that the new offsites and utilities area will contain arrays of
I tanks, land farm, impounding pit, blending area and other ancillary structures
needed for the increase in the production capacity of the refinery. The new offsite
and utilities area is located immediately south (based on refinery grid) of the
'I existing tank areas and roughly bounded by coordinates S I 3 3 0 t o S2320 and
W2675 to W300.

I The results of the previous geotechnical investigation at the site performed

for Stage I and II of the Yanbu Domestic Refinery and East-West Crude Oil Pipeline

I Project in 1979 and 1980 were reviewed and included in this report, wherever
appropriate.

I This report presents results of all the fieldwork and laboratorytesting, results
of the engineering analysis and general recommendations relating t o the foundation
design and construction for the proposed facilities. The recommendations
1 presented are of a preliminary nature, since the area is underlain by compressible
soils and tank specific borings were not performed. Field and laboratory test results
are presented in Appendices A and B t o this report, respectively.

I
I
I 2.0 SCOPE OF WORK

The purpose of this site investigation was t o evaluate the subsurface

I conditions within the new offsites and utilities area of the SAMAREC Yanbu
Refinery, and develop recommendations to assist with the design of suitable and
economic foundations for the proposed structures. In addition, t o provide advice
I on aspects of the construction that may be influenced by existing subsurface
conditions. The structures in the offsites and utilities area will mainly comprise
tanks and some ancillary structures.
I In order to achieve this purpose, the following scope of work was carried

I out:

0 The setting out of all test locations;

I 0 The drilling of 2 7 borings, designated 8-41 t o 8-67 at depths varying

from 7.5 to 15.5 metres with testing and sampling at 1 .O m intervals
I from 1.O m to 3.0 m below existing ground level, and at intervals of
every 1.5 m thereafter;

I 0 The collection of t w o bulk soil samples for compaction and California

Bearing Ratio tests;

I 0 Performance of laboratory tests on selected soil samples;

0 Engineering analysis and preparation of this report presenting the

I results of the studies, conclusions and recommendations.

The layout of the investigation points in relation to the existing and planned
I structures is presented on Plate 2.0, Investigation Layout Plan.

3.0 SITE CONDITIONS

I 3.1 SITE TOPOGRAPHY

I The area t o be occupied by the new offsites and utilities is located t o the
southern side of the existing tank farm. The ground surface is generally level with

I elevation varying from 2.6 to 2.8 m (MSL) except in the area east of the proposed
site (848 and 657)where the ground elevations vary in between 3.8 and 3.9 m
(MSL).

I A small area located to the south east (south of boring 832 from Stage I
investigation) of the proposed site is approximately 1 metre lower than the
I surrounding grade level o f the area.

The new offsites utilities area is bounded by wire fences and is accesible t o
I vehicles.
I
I 3.2 SURFACE CONDITIONS

The surface and near surface soils underlying the majority of the site area
I are generally silty sand with gravel, grey to brown coloured subrounded t o
subangular gravels and cobbles (metamorphic and igneous) and brown siltslclays.
About 50 percent of the site area is covered with silty sands with gravel and
I occasional cobbles and the remaining area with silts/clays and gravelkobbles.
Based on the ground levels measured from the present borings and the elevations
from previous investigations (1979-19801, it is understood that the majority of
I surface soils are imported fill material which was used for the site grading
operation.

I The distribution of the surface to near surface soils is indicated on Plate 3.0,
Existing SurfacelNear Surface Soils.

I The site area is free of vegetation.

I 3.3 SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS

Based on the boring data gathered in the investigation, the zoning system
I applied in the new process units can be likewise employed in the offsites and
utilities area. Zone 1, in which non-cohesive soil such as gravel, sand, and cobbles,
and zone 2, in which clay and silt layers were encountered are indicated o n Plates
I 4.0, Soil Zones, t o show the soil distribution underlying the site area. The zoning
was devised based on the physical and engineering behaviour of the on-site soils.

I Generalised subsurface section showing the typical subsurface soils in the

site area are prepared based on the results of borings and are presented on Plates
5.1, t o 5.6, Generalised Subsurface Section.
I The surfacehear surface soil layer in the site area is generally composed of
brown to grey silty sand with gravel and occasional cobbles (SM). This layer was
I encountered from the surface down t o about 1 metre elevation (MSL) and is
generally medium dense t o dense. However, occasional loose layers and very dense

I zones were encountered throughout the site area.

A brown low plastic silt/clay layer was encountered underlying the

I surfacehear surface sand layer. This layer occurs between elevation 2.5 t o -1.O
metre (MSL) and is medium t o stiff t o hard in consistency. The siltlclay layers
underlying the western portion of the site area are medium t o stiff, but siltslclays

I underlying the eastern portion of the site area are very stiff t o hard in consistency.
This observation is similar t o the earlier results as indicated in the previous
investigation reports (1979-1980).
I The thickness of the siltlclay layer is typically 1.0 t o 1.5 metres, but
thickens to about 2.5 metres within western portion of the site area (B-63).
I
I -3-

I
I
I Underlying the silt/clay layer is the carbonate layer generally consisting of
white, brownish white, or whitish brown coral detritus and calcarenite, moderately
cemented and usually recovered as sand (SM-RK) and gravel (GM-RK). This
I carbonate layer occurs approximately midway (B44, 53, 62 and 67) of the site
area and thickens westward to a maximum thickness of around 6.0 metres (B-63).
Generally, medium dense to dense with few isolated loose spots (B-42). This layer
I was encountered between 1.O to -7.0 metres (MSL).

The lowest layer encountered is the grey or brown, subrounded to

I subangular, very dense to dense clayey to silty gravel (GM) with some t o
occasional cobbles, and is encountered in all the boings in the site area. This layer
alternately occurs in some places with a grey to brown, medium dense t o dense
I silty t o clayey sand with some gravel. The gravel layer was encountered from 2.0
metres (MSL) t o -13.0 metres (MSL). A lower light grey to brown clay/silt layer

I was encountered within the gravel layers at elevations between -6.0 t o -12.0
metres (MSL). Typically the lower siltlclay thickness is around 1.O -1.5 metres, and
is hard in consistency.

I 3.4 GROUNDWATER CONDITIONS

I Groundwater levels were measured in all boreholes with the exception of

some borings which collapsed after the withdrawal of the casings. Groundwater
elevations varied from 0.2 to -0.3 m (MSL).
I The groundwater levels measured during this study are presented on Table
A I of Appendix A to this report.
I 4.0 GEOTECHNICAL MATERIAL PROPERTIES

I In the following sub-sections, summary of the engineering properties of the

on-site soils are presented. However, the details of the laboratory testing procedure
and the results of each individual test are presented in Appendix B, Laboratory
I Testing Programme to this report.

4.1 CLASSIFICATION TESTS

I Classification tests, comprising moisture content, particle size distribution

I and Atterberg limits were performed on selected samples. The results of all the
tests are presented on Table 1, Summary of Classification Test Results.

I Atterberg limits tests on fine grained samples indicated all samples t o

contain low plastic silt andlor clay and are classified as M L or CL.

I The fines content of sandy soils varied between 8 and 39 percent, with an
average of 23 percent. Gravelly soils generally contained low fines and ranged from
8 t o 22 (average of 16) percent. The sand content of the fine grained soils
I averaged t o 38 percent.

I -4-

I
I
I 4.2 CHEMICAL ANALYSIS RESULTS

Chemical tests on soil samples based on a 2:l water to soil extract were
I undertaken on five soil sam'ples. The test results are presented in the Appendix B
t o this report. The results indicate the soil pH to be slightly alkaline at 7.88 t o
8.16,chloride content ranged between 0.14to 0.87 percent, and sulphate content
I ranged between 0.018t o 0.208 percent. According t o British Standard (BS 81 101,
the average sulphate content (expressed as percent of SO,) of the soil samples
generally represent a class I potential for sulphate attack on foundation concrete.
I 4.3 SOIL CONSOLIDATION CHARACTERISTICS

I A standard oedometer test was performed on an undisturbed soil sample

recovered from boring 8-56. The results of this test is presented in the Appendix

I B to this report. The results showed no sign of swelling. Consolidation parameters

such as initial void ratio, compression and recompression indices were found t o be
0.459,0.175 and 0.042 respectively.
I 4.4 SOIL COMPACTION CHARACTERISTICS

I T w o bulk samples of GC-GM (S-4)and SC 6-51 class material were

collected from surfacehear surface soils at locations within the proposed site area.
The sample designated S-4was also tested for California Bearing Ratio (CBR).
I Detailed results for the compaction and CBR tests are presented in Appendix B to
this report. In summary, the maximum dry density of the materials varied between
2.21 and 2.32 Mg/m3 at optimum moisture contents of 6.5 and 4.2 percent. The
I soaked CBR of S-4obtained is 35 percent at 95 percent of maximum dry density
(MDD).

I 5.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1 GENERAL
I The proposed locations of the tankage areas in relation t o other facilities
within the refinery site area are shown on Plate 2.0.The site area has already been
I graded during the construction of the existing plant. Site inspection revealed that
the proposed site was developed by filling operation utilising importedlonsite

I natural soils.

We understand that several tanks ranging in diameter from 10.0metres t o

I 86.0 metres would be built across the site area. Since w e do not have any
information regarding proposed tank loadings, analysis for the tanks were
performed based on loadings imposed by similar tanks at the site.

I The occurrence of the relatively shallow layers of soft t o medium stiff silt
and clay significantly effect the tank foundations. As described in earlier sections
I of this report, the characteristics of this material vary across the site area, being
generally weaker and more compressible in the western areas than in the eastern

I -5-

I
1
I portion of the site. The thickness of these layers also varies considerably across
the site area, and there may exist deep localised pockets between the boring
locations. Generalised Subsurface sections through the proposed tankage area are
I presented on Plates 5.1 to 5.6.

Further borings should be conducted to gain detailed information on the

I subsurface conditions, to perform further engineering analysis, and provide
structure specific recommendations. We recommend that the tanks of 28 t o 44
metres in diameter should be investigated by at least one boring, and tanks larger
I than 44 metres should be investigated by at least three borings. For tanks larger
than 44 metres in diameter, w e further recommend that at least one boring should

I be extended t o a depth of 20 metres.

5.2 FOUNDATION ALTERNATIVES

I If soft soil conditions are encountered, when loading the tanks it is possible
to induce shear stresses in excess of the shear strength of the underlying soils,

I thus causing local yielding, excessive displacement and possible catastrophic

failure of the tank bases.

I The results of the field investigation, laboratory tests and the engineering
analysis performed indicate that, in some parts of the tankage area, stability may
be critical during initial loading.
I Various foundation options (as discussed below) may be considered in order
to improve the stability of the tanks and minimise the likelihood of failure.
I 0 Piled foundations: These may be considered but are likely t o be very
expensive. The recommendations presented in Section 5.3.5 of the
I Geotechnical Investigation Report for the New Process Units may be
used.

I 0 Excavation and removal of weak materials: This alternative may be

practicable in areas where the weak materials exist above the water
table. However, in parts of the proposed tankage area as indicated o n
I Plate 6.0, Occurence of Clayey Silty Soils Below Gravel Water Levels,
this is not the case, and considerable problems could be expected if

I large excavations below the water table were undertaken. In addition,

volumes of earthworks would be large, probably making this
alternative very expensive.

I 0 Preloadina prior to tank construction: Embankments imposing

foundation loads approximately equal t o the tank loads could be built
I over the tank area and left t o consolidate the underlying soils prior t o
construction of tanks. Embankments up to 7 metres high would have
t o be constructed with side slopes of 1 vertical to 2 horizontal. Thus
I considerable volumes of material are involved. However, such
material could. be reused elsewhere as general fill. Double handling

I -6-

I
I
I and embankment construction would entail additional costs.

On removal of embankments the underlying materials would be less

I compressible and exhibit higher shear strengths. Consequently tank
settlement would be less and their stability would be improved.

I This is a feasible alternative if the construction, consolidation and

removal periods of the preload embankments can be accommodated
within the critical path of the refinery upgrading construction
I programme as a whole, and that the material handling costs can be
shown t o be competitive with other alternatives. Further discussion
of this alternative is presented in a subsequent section.
I 0 Preloadina bv controlled water testina: A controlled water testing

I programme is a normal prerequisite in tank construction and may be

necessary even if one of the previous alternatives is adopted.
However, such a programme may also be used to improve the

I subsoil.

The rate of water loading may be chosen, commensurate with an

I adequate factor of safety against stability failure, such that any

excess pore water pressure generated by load application will
dissipate leading to consolidation and a gain in undrained shear
I strength of the underlying soils.

This is frequently the least expensive alternative but may involve an

I extended period of water testing and a high level of monitoring and
supervision. It has been extensively used worldwide in the
petrochemical industry when tanks are built overlying soft soils.
I However, when compared t o the piling alternative, there is a small
but finite risk of tank mal-performance which may result in the need
for relevelling. Further discussion of this alternative is presented in a
I subsequent section.

Other Dossibilities: Other foundation possibilities include stabilisation

I
0
of the compressible materials by chemicals or cement grout, use of
reinforced earth foundations to spread applied loads over a larger

I area; and densification of the subsoils by mechanical means

(vibroflotation or dynamic consolidation). These alternatives have
been reviewed but we do not consider that they would offer

I practicable or economical solutions in this situation.

5.3 PRELOADING BY CONTROLLED WATER TESTING

I In the following Section, we discuss this foundation alternative and present

preliminary recommendations. A controlled programme of integrity water testing
I may also be used as a preloading method of improving ground conditions.

I
I
I
I 5.3.1 Tanks

An array of tanks are proposed to be constructed for the Refinery upgrade

I programme. The location of these tanks is shown on Plate 2.0. From an
examination of Plate 4.0, it could be seen that the majority of the tanks are
underlain by the clayey/silty soils classified as Zone 2.
I 5.3.2 Proof Rolling

I We recommend that the surface soils be proof rolled prior t o construction

of the tank pad.

I The purpose of proof rolling is threefold: to densify the surface and near
surface sandy soils; to detect the occurrence of any soft cohesive soils which may
require removal; and t o provide an even working surface for construction of the
I tank pad.

I Proof rolling should be performed over the tankage area and should extend
t o 5 metres beyond the edge of the tank.

I We recommend that a heavy vibratory roller (static weight a t least 3 tonnes)

be used t o achieve a density not less than 90 percent of the ASTM 01557
compaction test maximum dry density. We estimate that several passes of this

I equipment will be necessary. Compaction will be assisted by moisture conditioning.

The number of passes, optimum operating frequencyand degree of moisture

I conditioning will depend on the type of equipment used and should be determined
on site.

I The proof rolled surface should be inspected and any soft patches that may
be detected should be removed and replaced. Additional rolling will be necessary
where adequate densification has not been achieved.
I We recommend that the above work be performed under the direct
supervision of a qualified soils engineer.
I 5.3.3 Tank Pad and Rinowall Construction

I We consider that the edge detail shown on Plate 7, Proposed Tank Edge
Detail, will be suitable for the tanks. However, as a temporary measure during
water testing it would be advisable to extend the berm width 2 metres as shown
I on Plate 8 , Increased Berm Width. The additional material may be removed on
completion of the water testing programme.

I In the past, at locations around the world, a significant proportion of tank

failures have been traced t o incorrectly constructed ringwalls. The ringwall material

I should be of a high quality, hard, angular, crushed rock t o be approved by a

competent geotechnical engineer. The supervising engineer should pay particular

I -a-

I
I
I attention both t o accurate setting out of the ringwa'll and to compaction of the
crushed rock.

I 5.3.4 Settlement

We have performed settlement analysis of all the proposed tanks based on

I geotechnical parameters available from the most adjacent borings, assuming a
uniform profile across the tank diameter.

I The estimated total centre settlements of these tanks, under full height of
water testing, are as follows:

1 Edge settlements are expected t o be of the order of 60-70 percent of the

estimated centre settlement values.

I On emptying these tanks after water testing, a permanent settlement will

have been induced under the tanks primarily due to consolidation of near surface
clays/ silts. Subsequent reloading during operation will result in relatively small
I settlements.

Rate of settlement may be used as an indicator of degree of consolidation.

I Plates 9.1 t o 9.4, Proposed Preload by Water Test Progamme, present estimates
of settlement against time throughout the proposed loading periods. Actual
settlement rates may be expected to vary from those shown depending o n local
I variations in soil composition. For most loading conditions the rate of settlement
under constant applied load will decrease with time.

1 5.3.5 Stability

The shallow layers of medium t o stiff siltlclay which occur in the tank area
1 place a limit on the initial load that can be applied in order t o maintain an
acceptable factor of safety against instability. Therefore, a stage loading program
is required during water testing.
I The critical stability condition is one of failure of the subsoil at shallow depth

I close t o the edge of the tank. Our analysis indicates that the critical failure mode
is in effect independent of tank diameter and thickness of silt (for thicknesses
greater than 1 metre) within the limits of tank sizes under consideration and

I thicknesses of claylsilt encountered.

We have performed tank stability analyses using the data available from
1 widely spaced borings in the tankage area and have developed preliminary
recommendations for a preloading water test programme. Our preliminary
recommendations are as follows:
I
I - 10.

I
I
I Filling may take place at a rate of 2.4 metres (one plate height) per
day, up to a height of 7.2 metres. Thereafter the rate of filling should
not exceed 1.2 metres per day. This would allow a sufficient period
I of time for instrument readings to be taken and processed, and any
incipient failure identified before the situation became critical.

I Tanks should be filled with water to a height of 7.2 metres. This

initial water height should be held until 90 percent consolidation has
taken place (or a minimum period of 48 hours).
I The water height may then be increased to 1 2 metres and again held
at that level until 90 percent consolidation has taken place (or a
I minimum period of 48 hours).

1 The water height may then be increased t o the maximum height of

water test of 15.0 metres and held at that level for 48 hours or until

I 50 percent consolidation has taken place, whichever is greater.

The tank may then be emptied.

I 5.3.6 Tank Performance Monitoring durincl Water Testing

I In order t o perform a satisfactory programme of water testing, w e

recommend that the following procedures should be adopted.

I 0 The programme should be performed under the full time supervision

of a qualified geotechnical engineer who is fully familiar with the
ground conditions and the limiting tank deformation criteria.
I The duties of the engineer would involve monitoring tank performance
in order t o detect any incipient failure condition and recommending
I suitable remedial measures if such circumstances were t o occur.

Arrangements should be made to take levels at a number of equally

I 0
'
spaced peripheral settlement points attached t o the outside of the
tank shell. For a 10 metres diameter tank this typically may be 4
points, and for 14 to 28 metres, 44 t o 64 metres and 8 6 metres
I tanks, 8, 12 and 20 points respectively. Measurements at the level
points should be taken during construction of the tank and a final

I measurement taken immediately prior t o water test. The details of the

settlement monitoring points are indicated on Plate 10.0, Proposed
Method of Tank Instrumentation.

I 0 Tanks should be filled with water t o a pre-determined level as

discussed in earlier sections. Levels should be taken daily and

I checked against the initial. readings when empty. Out-of-plane

settlements should also be calculated and plotted. From the time

I - 11 -

I
I
I when the pre-determined water level has been reached it will be
necessary to allow a consolidation period during which monitoring
should continue. When the rate of displacement indicate that an
I acceptable degree of consolidation has taken place, filling may
continue until a second pre-determined height of water is achieved.
Measurements should continue throughout. Provided the tank
I performance remains satisfactory, filling may continue in subsequent
load steps following similar procedures until full height is achieved.

I Provision should also be made for performing emergency remedial measures

should a potential failure condition occur or limiting differential settlement be
reached. This could involve the following:
I 0 Provision for rapid lowering of the water level within tanks.

I 0 Provision of a stockpile of fill, suitable handling equipment and

suitable access t o tank edges for the construction of counterbalance
I berms.

I 0 Tank relevelling.

5.4 PRELOADING BY EMBANKMENTS

I In the following section we discuss the alternative preloading the tankage

areas by means of embankments. This alternative is technically feasible but

I requires considerable volumes o f earthworks which may prove uneconomic.

Individual embankments or embankments covering several tanks may be

I constructed. The final height of the embankments should be such that stresses are
induced within the underlying soils at least equal the maximum stresses which will
be imposed by the tanks (during integrity water testing).
I Assuming that the material used to form the embankments is that specified
for general fill then the embankments should be built t o 7 metres height. The area
I at the top of the embankments should extend t o cover the plan area t o be occupied
by the tanks. Side slopes t o embankments should be 1 vertical t o 2 horizontal.
Necessary embankment heights may be calculated assuming a bulk density for the
I compacted fill material of 2.2 tonnes per cubic metre. This density should be
confirmed during embankment construction by the performance of in situ density
testing. Final embankment heights should be adjusted t o reflect field densities.
I Settlements of embankments should be monitored by the supervising engineer
throughout the construction period and during the consolidation period. One

I method of accomplishing this is by the use of rod settlement gauges, a typical

detail of which is presented on Plate 11.O, Rod Settlement Gauge Typical Detail.

I
-
I 12-

I
I
I 5.5 EXCAVATION & REMOVAL OF SOFT AND/OR LOOSE NEAR SURFACE
MATERIALS

I An alternative to preloading would be to excavate and dispose of the near

surface silts, clays and loose silty sands.

I These materials should be removed over the full area of the tank, and
extending beyond the edge of the tank by 4 metres, down t o a depth where a
competent bearing stratum is reached. A suitable bearing stratum would be the top
I of the carbonate layer or the top of a dense gravel strata.

Volumes of material that would require excavation is expected to be large

I in addition to the problems in excavations below the groundwater level.

5.6 BUNDS
I Spillage retention bunds may be built using general site fill in accordance
with the recommendations stated in Section 5.2.2 and 5.2.3 of the Geotechnical
I Investigation Report for the New Process Units.

I 5.7 EMBANKMENTS

L o w embankments used t o support roads and pipe tracks, and the formation

I of tank pads and bunds may be constructed using the general fill material as
specified in Section 5.2.2 and 5.2.3 of the Geotechnical Investigation Report for
the New Process Units.

I Side slopes may be formed at 1 vertical to 2 horizontal and should be

protected from erosion using one of the alternatives discussed in Section 5.2.9,
I Erosion Protection of the Geotechnical Investigation Report for the New Process
Units.

I 5.8 USE OF CONCRETE

The soluble sulphate content of the soil samples tested varied from 0.08 t o
I 0.208 percent by weight (average of 0.09) and could generally be categorised as
Class 1 (BS 81 IO) potential for sulphate attack.

I The soluble chloride content of the soil samples tested was found to be up
to 0.87 percent, and the pH values ranged between 7.98 and 8.16.

I The use o f concrete for construction purposes is addressed in the Concrete

Studies Report.

APPENDIX A
I
I FIELD INVESTIGATION PROGRAMME

I This appendix presents the results, records, and methods employed for all
the field investigation work conducted at SAMAREC Yanbu Refinery. The field
work for the entire project commenced on February 24, 1993, and was completed

I o n April 26, 1993. All these field investigation activities were directed and
supervised by Saudi Arabian Dames & Moore engineering geologist. The Project
Manager in-charge monitored the progress of investigation t o ensure a high quality

1 of work, and kept SAMAREC informed of the progress. In addition, during the field
work operation Foster Wheeler representatives were present on site.

I The scope of field work for the offsites and utilities area included the
following:

I 0 Setting out of all testing locations;

0 Drilling of a total of 27 borings t o a maximum depth of 15.5 metres

I with the performance of Standard Penetration Tests in soils, a t
intervals of every 1 .O metre within the first three metres and every
1.5 metres thereafter;
I 0 Measurement of groundwater level in the borings and backfilling o f
the drilled borings; and
I 0 Collection of bulk samples for compaction and CBR tests.

I The above activities are discussed in detail as follows:

I A I Location Survey

All boring and bulk soil sample test locations were set out by a Saudi
I Arabian Dames & Moore’s engineering geologist during the progress of the
fieldwork. Locations were determined based from the drawings provided by the
Foster Wheeler representatives t o Saudi Arabian Dames & Moore showing the co-
I ordinates and setting-out data of the test locations. A summary of the setting out
data for all boring and bulk sample test locations is presented on Table A I . A plan
showing all setting out points is shown on Plate 2.0 of the main text.
I A 2 Borehole Drillinq, Field Testinq and Samoling

I Twenty seven (27) borings were drilled, with insitu testing and soil sampling.
The borings were terminated a t depths between 7.5 and 15.5 metres with a total
metreage of 314. The main purpose of the drilling was t o assess the subsurface
I conditions underlying the site area.
-AI -

I
I
1
Adel Engineering Office, a subcontractor to Saudi Arabian Dames & oore
I performed the drilling work, but was directed and supervised by a Saudi Arabian
Dames & Moore engineering geologist. A truck mounted CME 75 rig equipped with
soil samplers, helical stem augers, and accessories was utilised t o drill through soil
I and rock. The method employed t o drill through the subsurface materials was by
continuous flight helical hollow stem augering. In this sytem, a cutting head
(tungsten-carbide bit) is attached to the augers with a center bit plug (fish tail bit),
1 and the hole is advanced. A t the desired sampling depth, the plug is removed and
standard penetration test or Dames & Moore 'U' type undisturbed soil sampling is

I performed. Auger flights are added as required and the hole is advanced to the
desired depth.

1 Standard Penetration Tests (SPT's) were performed in accordance with

ASTM D1586 in the soil at appropriate depth intervals as directed by the Saudi
Arabian Dames & Moore engineering geologist. Testing interval was 1.O metre for
I the upper 3.0 metres, and 1.5 metres from there down to drilling termination
depths. These tests were conducted by dropping a 63.5 kg hammer (safety
hammer type) falling from a height of 0.76 metre. The number of blows required
I t o drive the split spoon sampler into the soil for every 0.15 metre increment (total
of 0.45m) was recorded. The SPT N value is calculated as the sum of blows for
the last 0.3 m o f penetration.
1 Most of the borings were drilled with the 100 m m (4 in) diameter helical
augers. Drilling was difficult especially in the gravellykobbly soils. In fact, at the
'I completion of drilling investigation, most of the helical augers used were extremely
abraded, resulting in the reduction o f the auger diameter (outside). Regular
replacement of drilling bits was necessary. Despite the difficulty in drilling in the
,I gravelly /cobbly soils, there was no standby days attributed t o the breakdown of
the rig during the entire fieldwork operation.

I Specifically, the drilling in the offsites and utilities areas were conducted
from March 31 to April 18, 1993.

1 In general, granular soil samples were recovered from the SPT split spoon
samplers. The cohesive soil samples were collected using a Dames & Moore 'U'-

I type sampler, and was driven in the same manner as the SPT sampling.

Soils were logged and classified in accordance with the Unified Soil
I Classification System (USCS). The USCS system of classification is presented on
Plate A I . The field soil classification was revised (if necessary) in the final logs
based on the laboratory test results. A key to log of borings is presented on Plate
I A2, and the classification, description, and relevant details of the subsurface
materials are indicated on Plates A3.1 to A3.27 Log of Boring.

I
I - A2 -

I
I
I
A3 Bulk Soil Sampling
I Two (2) bulk soil samples, designated S-4, and S-5 were collected from the

I surfacehear surface soils at t w o separate locations within the offsites area and
were tested for compaction. California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test was also
conducted on sample S-4.

1 A4 Groundwater Measurements

I Groundwater measurements were carried out in the majority of the borings

using a battery operated electric dip meter. Measurements were usually taken a
f e w hours or after a day had elapsed upon completion of each of the borings.

I Groundwater monitoring was not possible in eight borings (842, B45; 846,
847, B48, B57, 860 and B62), drilled due t o collapse of the holes after the
I withdrawal of the auger flights upon the completion of the borings.

The groundwater data are recorded on each of the individual logs presented
I in Plates A3.1 to A3.27.

The following Tables and Plates complete this Appendix.

I LABORATORY TESTING

I Representative samples of soils from the borings were transported t o Saudi

I Arabian Dames & Moore’s materials laboratory in Riyadh for testing. The testing
programme was performed during the months of March to May 1993. All tests
were assigned by the project geotechnical engineer and performed under the

I supervision of Saudi Arabian Dames & Moore’s Laboratory Manager.

B1 Classification Tests

I Gradation, Atterberg Limits (plastic and liquid limits), and moisture content
tests were carried out on selected soil samples as an aid in the classification. All

I the tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM standards (D4318 for liquid
and plastic limits, D422 for gradation, and D2216 for moisture content).

I Collectively, the said tests are called classification tests. The test results are
presented on Plates B1 . I t o B1.5. A summary of the soil classification tests is also
presented on Table 1 of the main report.

I B2 ComDaction and CBR Tests

I T w o bulk soil samples 6 - 4 and S-5) were tested for compaction and
classification tests. Compaction test was carried out as described in ASTM D1557.

I California Bearing Ratio (CBR) was conducted on sample S-4 in accordance

with ASTM D1883. --

I The results of compaction and classification tests are presented on Plate

B2.1 and 82.2, while the CBR test result is presented on Plate 83.

I B3 Consolidation Tests

I A one dimensional consolidation test, was carried out o n a selected

undisturbed soil sample obtained from boring B-56. This undisturbed sample was
recovered from the boring using a Dames & Moore ‘U‘ type sampler. The sample

I was tested on standard oedometer in general accordance with ASTM D 2435. The
test result is presented on Plate 84, Consolidation Test Result.

I B4 Chemical Analvsis

Analyses were performed on selected soil samples to determine pH, sulphate

I and chloride contents. The tests were undertaken t o determine the deterioration

- B1

I
I
I potential of the foundation concrete and reinforcing steel. Tests were performed
in accordance with BS 1337 and other recognized international standards. Sulphate
concentrations quoted in the results summary are expressed as percent of SO,.
