Chicago has the highest rate for unemployment since the year of 2016.In the
year of 2017 there was 4,096 individuals that was in shelters and 1,561 individuals living
on the street(Insights july,2018).If people continue to be unemployed homelessness will
continue to be a growing problem that may never be solved. If homelessness in Chicago
is related to unemployment in Chicago, Then a decrease in unemployment means a
decrease in homelessness.
Homelessness has been a major problem in the city of Chicago. 80,384 Chicagoans
were homeless in 2016(Chicago coalition for the homeless, 2016). This is a large number and
that is a problem because that means there's a chance that they are unemployed. CPS served
almost 9,000 additional families experiencing homelessness in other types of living
arrangements (Insight july, 2018).With shelters helping individuals find a place to sleep it helps
lower the percentage of people living on the street. Chicago reported that the homelessness
rate has increased(Chicago coalition for the homeless, 2016). This shows that this is a growing
problem.
People are left homeless because they aren’t giving enough job opportunities.
40% of 5,000 city jobs was cut for predominately black zip codes(Emmanuel november,
2016). With jobs being cut in predominantly black zip codes they have no access to no
job opportunities whatsoever. The unemployment rate in Illinois for the first quarter of
2018 was just over 9 percent as opposed as to about 4 percent overall in March(Npr
illinois, 2016).If if the rate continue to grow then the unemployment issue is going to
continue to grow.25 percent of its African-American residents jobless, Chicago has the
highest black unemployment rate among the nation’s five most populous
cities(Emmanuel november, 2016). If people remain jobless then people are going to
continue sleeping on the streets and begging for money.
Unemployment has led to people being homeless living in shelters and in need for
money.Approximately 1,200 families will likely access shelter or other homeless
services while experiencing literal homelessness in the coming year(Insights july,2018).
Having no job will lead to individuals living in shelters causing people to continue being
unemployed.. In the year of 2016 76% blacks was living in shelters (Chicago coalition
for the homeless, 2016).due to lack of access to jbs it’s cause individuals to have to live
in shelters or even worse having to sleep on the streets in the cold(Tincan 2018). Many
factors that led to homelessness was because of not having a job. This forces
someone to be homeless.
