Three Kiwi-Indians have been named in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours List released earlier this week

for services to ethnic communities and
women and have been honoured with the New
Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) and Engineer
Arthur Robert Ashan Amputch as Officer of the
New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for his
services to Engineering.

C ommunity worker Anjum Rahman is a
political and human rights activist working
for the right of Muslim women, especially
speaking against discrimination of Muslims.
Ms Rahman is based in Hamilton and
known for her roles in different community
organisations as board-member and has spoken
for diversity and inclusiveness of Muslims in
the community.
“The work I do is with various groups of
people, every achievement is the result of a
group effort, and I want to acknowledge all
the people I have worked with and who have
supported me, including my family and friends,
my employers and other community members.
It is a privilege to be recognised, but I could
have done nothing without them,” Ms Rahman
told The Indian Weekender.
Ms Rahman was just five years old when
she moved to Hamilton, New Zealand with her
family. Following her struggle with her cultural

identity in her childhood she looked up to her
parents as role models.
Ms Rahman was the founding member and
the first secretary of the Islamic Women’s
Council in New Zealand that brought women
of Islamic faith together since 1990.
Over the past two and half decades,
Ms Rahman has been a vocal on rights of
Muslim women and raised concerns of racial
discrimination against the Muslim community
and Muslim women in New Zealand, especially
after the 9/11 attacks.
But with her work with the community over
two decades, she considers that New Zealand
has witnessed many positive changes toward
different ethnic communities, especially
Muslim women, but there is still a long way
to go.
“Things are better and worse. There is more

About what next for her, she mentioned
working on a new initiative called ‘Inclusive
Aotearoa Collective’.
“With this new initiative, we plan to
bring a more strategic approach to ending
discrimination in Aotearoa New Zealand.
We hope to bring people and organisations
together so that they work more effectively,”

was named an Officer of New Zealand

List earlier this month. Arthur Amputch is
currently working as a Technical Director
with Riley Consultants Ltd. overseeing civil
and environmental engineering projects.
The ONZM recipient has over 25 years of
experience, over 30 awards and recognitions,

Mr Amputch came to New Zealand 40 years
ago and studied BSc in Pure and Applied
Mathematics, Bachelors in Engineering
(Civil) and later Masters of Engineering

engineering and mathematics. Had he remained
in academics, he would have been a professor,
but fate took a different turn for him, and he
moved into civil engineering as his next job at
Tonkin & Taylor.

as Muslim community
observes Eid-ul-Fitr

he holy month of Ramadan came to
an end after 30 days of fasting in New
Zealand and the community gathered
in hundreds at mosques and event centres on
Thursday, June 6 to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.
Eid is one of the biggest festivals for the
Muslim community when the fasting comes to
an end and feasting begins for the community.
On the cloudy and chilly morning of
Thursday, men, women and children came out
in thousands clad in their best ethnic dresses
chanting verses from the Quran glorifying the
Creator and proceeded towards their nearest
mosques or Eidgahs to make congregational
two-rakat special Eid prayers.
Once the Imam makes the special Eid prayer,
he delivers a sermon delving into deeper
meaning and significance of this day and how
to maintain the discipline of patience and
timeliness of prayers in the following months
to come.

made for male and female followed by an Eid
carnival arranged at the stadium for the families
to enjoy the day.

FIANZ website hacked creating
nationwide confusion on Eid date

I
n a shocking turn of events, an almost
mundane and yet exciting news update
about the sighting of the moon of Shawwal,
to declare Eid or not, has created mass confusion
nationwide in the Muslim community.
Federation of Islamic Associations of New
Zealand (FIANZ), the apex body of the Muslim
community in New Zealand, saw its website
hacked and released a memo on the site that
said “Moon has been sighted and Eid-ul-Fitr
will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 5”,
which was actually not official nor valid and
without the knowledge of the FIANZ members,
Ulema board and the officials.
The exact date of Eid ul-Fitr is determined
by the first sighting of the new moon. The end
of Ramadan is marked on the 29th day if a new
moon is sighted, but if not, it extends to the 30th
day.
In this case, this year the Muslim community
had observed 29 days of Ramadan until
Tuesday, June 4, and were eagerly waiting for
the moon to be sighted so they can observe Eid
on Wednesday, June 5. This eagerness was due
to the reason that news was afloat in some of
the countries such as Saudi Arabia (UAE), UK,
Australia and Pakistan among others.
Just around sunset when the FIANZ members,
Ulemas and the officials from different mosques
across the country scan the sky trying the locate
the moon- the FIANZ website was hacked, and
a memo released creating mass confusion in the
country.
As soon as FIANZ became aware of the
malice act of hacking, it immediately informed
the community through its Facebook page that
“the news memo for Eid on FIANZ page is
fake” and instead to follow its Facebook page
for authentic and official update of the moon
sighting.
“We prepared two memos during this time
– one said the moon had been sighted and Eid
will be observed on Wednesday, June 5, and the
other said the moon had not been sighted and
Friday, June 7, 2019
Muslims will complete 30th Ramadan as per
calendar and Eid will be observed on Thursday,
June 6,” Dr Anwar Ghani, spokesperson from
FIANZ told The Indian Weekender.
“In the evening, we realised that our website
was hacked and the unofficial memo released
without FIANZ’s knowledge and the admins
were barred from entering the FIANZ website
for at least 40 minutes.
“Following this, we released a post on
Facebook about the ‘fake news’ on the website
and to avoid the website and follow FIANZ
Facebook for updates,” Mr Ghani added.
The Facebook post by FIANZ received over
600 comments where people expressed their
confusion, scepticism and connect the dots as

many social media pages related to the Muslim
community had already downloaded the ‘fake
memo’ and declared Eid to be celebrated on
Wednesday on their respective pages.
The second post by FIANZ stating the
same too received over 100 comments from
the people with some people frowning upon
the confusion created and questioning the
credibility of the information floating on social
media.
FIANZ just around 8:45 p.m. announced on
its Facebook page that the moon had not been
sighted and Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on
Thursday, June 6.
NZ Eid Day, the popular page and not-for-
profit community group organising the NZ Eid
Day at Eden Park too shared the news from the
FIANZ website- which was later deleted its
post and confirmed FIANZ’s final update for
Eid celebration on Thursday.
“We have contacted the police and lodged a
complaint, and the cybersecurity team of police
is looking into it,” Dr Ghani told The Indian
Weekender.
Dr Ghani further added that FIANZ would
investigate the incident along with the police
and release an official statement about the
whole saga after Eid to the community.
FIANZ later also released a document that
answers all queries and FAQs about the science
and process of sighting the moon.

from desires and control one’s urges

of ‘patience’ that we, the Muslim
community tried to learn this month
and it was supposed to be brought
into practice in our lives, especially
during testing times.
To explain the whole issue for
those who are not familiar with
what happened: Tuesday evening,
June 4, started on a very exciting

woman has died following
a car crash into a closed
retail store earlier on Monday
morning, June 3.
Police identified the deceased as
55-year-old Michelle Anne Key- a
Zumba dance instructor confirmed
by her friend and colleague at
dance class Sharon Harmer.
The incident was reported to emergency
services around 9:50 a.m. on Queen’s Birthday
morning after a red Nissan Tiida hatchback car
hit Batra Fashion Villa retail store on Great
South Road, Papatoetoe.
The owner of the shop said that the shop was
closed and was about to open in another 15-20
minutes for the day and had the shop been open,
the severity of the incident would have been
much higher given it is the Eid shopping period

“This was going to be one of the busiest days
for us because of Eid, if this had happened 10-15
minutes later, there would have been customers
and staff inside, and I am relieved that our staff
are OK,” owner of the shop Karandeep Singh

“We have suffered a loss of at least $30,000
to $40,000, we do have insurance that will
cover some, but we don’t know how much,”

mmigration New Zealand has announced
changes with respect to onshore chest x-ray
examination for applicants implemented
from May 1, 2019.
The new process requires applicants to first
visit an Immigration New Zealand (INZ) Panel
Medical Clinic to have their case created in
eMedical. They are then referred to a panel
radiologist to get the chest x-ray examination.
This change was confirmed with all onshore
panel clinics on 30 November 2018, who were
given until 1 May 2019 to adopt the process.
The change relates to chest x-ray only cases
and does not impact general or limited medical
examinations.
Reasons for change
The process change has been introduced to
ensure that the panel physicians at referring
clinics are responsible for following up any
abnormal findings with applicants.
Before this change was introduced, clients
could go directly to a panel radiologist for a
chest x-ray only examination. This is different
to the New Zealand health care model where
general practitioners co-ordinate any follow up
that may be required.
The previous process also offered no
assurance that appropriate healthcare would be
arranged where a condition was identified.
Changing the process means applicants will
be promptly informed about abnormal results
by medical professionals, instead of through
correspondence with INZ.
INZ consulted with New Zealand’s Onshore
Panel Physician Network before making the
decision to implement the change. Most clinics
that responded to the consultation welcomed
the change, noting the process will now align
with the traditional New Zealand health care
model.

Zee TV and a recent two-time Filmfare Awards

She is a known powerhouse on stage, having
performed 1000+ concerts all around the
world and is ready to rock Auckland with her
mesmerizing voice and ground-breaking vocal

songs presented in a beautifully arranged

Indian man racially
assaulted in
broad daylight in
Sandringham

M
onday, Queen’s Birthday was an
afternoon of horror for an Indian
man as he was brazenly assaulted by
three men in an empty Sandringham street.
The man spoke to NZ Herald narrating his
ordeal of being beaten by three strange men and
hurled racial slurs and for no apparent reason.
The Indian man who chose to remain
anonymous said that he was strolling the streets
looking for a house to buy in the suburb when
he was pointed at by a group of men driving in
a car while crossing a pedestrian crossing on
Fowlds Ave and into Locarno Ave.
The men hurled racial slurs on him, but the
victim chose to ignore them kept on his way.
A little while the victim realised he was being
followed by the car and before he could react or
alarm anyone the three men got off the vehicle
and started punching and hitting him.
The victim was hurt on his neck, chest, head,
stomach and other parts of the body while he
screamed for help.
The men kept hitting him for 10-20 seconds
before cursing, shouting abuses and words that
the victim said are ‘too unspeakable’ even to
narrate to a reporter.
The men rushed off after hurling racial abuses
at him, and the victim hurried to the safety of
his house. He narrated the incident to his wife

to note down the registration number of the car.
The couple is still in shock and finds it hard
to believe that a safe and peaceful place like
New Zealand where such racial incidents are
rare, and he had to experience it first-hand.
The victim said he wants to create awareness
about racism so that people are more cautious.
The victim is also puzzled trying to
understand what would have led those men to
racially abuse him without any provocation
or reason.
“What makes them have so much anger
inside them that they beat someone, hate
someone who is not a part of their community?
What makes them feel that they should do this?
I don’t have the answers,” the victim said in a
conversation with the NZ Herald.
The victim also said that ever since he
moved to this country from New Zealand from
India two years ago, he has found Kiwis very
welcoming and ‘really generous’ and hopes
such incidents do not happen with anyone else.

two islands,” with a relatively buoyant
South Island while the North Island appears
largely to be in a holding position, says

Real-time statistics show that nationally,
the average asking price in May lifted 1.1
per cent to $656,685 when compared to the
previous month, however more than half of the
North Island regions registered asking price
falls (seven of twelve). The exceptions were
the Waikato and Wellington regions with all-
time highs, the Bay of Plenty and Gisborne
remaining static, while Taranaki saw an
increase of 2.2 per cent.
“This is in stark contrast to the South Island,
with five of the seven South Island regions
registering lifts in average asking prices. An
active Central Otago/Lakes region tipped
back over the one-million-dollar price tag and
two other regions hit new record asking price
highs,” says Vanessa Taylor.

he Labour coalition’s Wellbeing Budget announced last week has been hailed in 7 June 1976
many parts of the world as being a path breaking one, some commentators even
calling it the budget of the future.

There is no doubt that the Wellbeing Budget has the wellbeing of less fortunate New
Zealanders at heart.

Macs were priced at 75 cents (equivalent to about $6 today), cheeseburgers 40 cents and
hamburgers 30 cents.
In its very look and feel, it tries hard to set right the long neglect of many facets of the

For instance, the approaches to tackling the deeply concerning situation of mental
health infrastructure and services in this country have been half-hearted and desultory

But in its zeal to counter the long neglect of the social sector by previous governments,
this government needs to guard against going overboard on over-correcting the imbalance
by showing any signs of neglect of the economic sector, which indeed is the lifeblood
of any successful nation.
Spending on wellbeing is great. But then you can’t spend and expect to build your
surplus if you don’t have the right avenues and strategies to earn at the same time.
The Wellbeing Budget does little by way of stimulating business sentiment in this
predominantly small and medium enterprise driven nation.
What it perceives as socially responsible measures that it has adopted since coming to
power haven’t exactly been music to entrepreneurs’ ears.
The economy hasn’t faltered so far but anecdotally the business sentiment is far from
gung ho and is all but resigned to a slow growth or even a no growth outlook – at least
for the remaining term of this government.
Moreover this government’s much touted pet schemes like Kiwibuild and free tertiary
education are threatening to come unstuck and inspire little confidence in the business
community about the leaders’ commercial nous.
Running coalitions in never an easy task even for the most astute of politicians. And
nothing shows it better than the Wellbeing Budget itself.
Feted as it has been for the new age ring it has, with its much-needed emphasis on the
social sector and the wellbeing of the deprived sections of New Zealanders, it has raised
many an eyebrow on its spending on defence, which has anything but the same new age
ring to it.
Quite clearly, the enhanced defence allocation and the one for the tree planting
initiative are to mollycoddle Labour’s coalition partner New Zealand First for their
ongoing support.
That belies a strong streak of realpolitik on the part of Labour and actually undermines
the great deal of goodwill that it would have earned from its otherwise trend setting
Wellbeing Budget.

Modi’s second term: Need to replace
FEAR with HOPE

P
rime Minister Narendra Modi’s re-
election by such large margins in a
sweeping victory is testimony to his
popularity across India. Many media articles
during the seven-week long election process,
however, expressed fear that a Modi victory
would disenfranchise tens of millions and
threaten Indian democracy itself.
This perspective is attributable to what I
call the FEAR (False Events Appearing Real)
syndrome. This syndrome is caused by thinking
that the past is a prologue and believing that
only bad things will happen in the future.
Modi’s challenge in his second term will be
to replace that FEAR with HOPE (Healing,
Opportunity and Progress for Everyone).
Modi’s comments in his first speech after
winning the election indicate that he is aware
of this need and committed to addressing the
challenge. In that speech, he stated, “We are for
the 130-crore (1.3 billion) people of the country,
we cannot differentiate between anyone.
We cannot differentiate on the basis of caste
or religion or race or region. We have shown
how to achieve Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas
(development for all) and now we have to win
Sabka Vishwas (everyone’s trust).
Modi went on to declare, “We are for the
people who trusted us and those whose trust we
need to win. Nobody should be ‘other’ for us. It
takes a lot of strength to try and win the hearts
of people.”
What will Modi need to do to show that
strength and win those hearts? What will be
required to replace fear with hope? It will be
necessary to confront and combat three primary
factors that created the sense of fear among
many based upon Modi’s first term in office.
Those factors were: the killing and
mistreatment of Muslims and other minorities;
an emphasis on Hindu nationalism in
the governing process; and, an economic
development and reform process that was only
partially completed. 
There have been numerous incidents of
killings and mistreatment of minorities during
Modi’s five years. Early in his tenure, there
were several lynchings of poor Muslims in
the Hindi Belt due to cow slaughter. Modi did
not condone those lynchings or other vigilante
violence on religious minorities and Dalits
during his tenure.
On the other hand, he did not speak out
courageously and authoritatively against those
heinous actions either.
In his second term, the Prime Minister should
do so. He should call for and take steps through
his administration to rein-in the fringe elements
of his supporters who endanger the lives and
livelihoods of others. This will start to drive

There is much that remains to be done. That
is why Modi in his second term should advance,
intensify and accelerate the critical reforms

comprehensive agenda as outlined herein, five
years from now HOPE will reign for India and
the only thing to fear will be fear itself. With
that accomplished, India will stand as a global
leader and a role model for democracy.

Amarinder Singh urges PM to waive farm loans
P unjab chief minister Amarinder Singh Wednesday urged Prime Minister
Narendra Modi to waive off loans of distressed farmers at the national
level. In a letter to Modi, the chief minister said that a one-time agriculture
debt waiver for farmers was essential to reduce distress among the farming
community and help in putting agriculture sector on a path of high growth
trajectory.
“The government of India should bite the bullet once and for all,”
Amarinder Singh wrote in the letter. It was widely acknowledged that most
of these ‘anndaatas’ (growers) of the country were facing severe debt stress,
as a result of which some of them had even taken the extreme step of ending
their lives by committing suicides, the CM said. He also emphasised on
the need to rectify the situation, not with slow and small measures but with
carefully thought-out steps to mitigate their distress and improve their living
conditions.

• Add chicken stock and bring the soup
to a boil, then simmer and cook for 2
