Introduction

According to research on 3 million children from schools in California and Texas,

shows that having a high physical activity also improves academic scores.

Correspondingly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, recommends that

the amount of physical activity during adolescence is at least 3 hours per week (CDC,

n.d.). While physical education, PE, is designated to provide students to become physically

healthy, according to the CDC, participating in PE can also influence academic

achievement, such as concentration and attentiveness in the classroom (National Center

for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2010).

Methodology

Now, I’m going to analyze my methodology presenting my methods of research.

The topic of the benefits of PE on high school students interests me, because I usually see

a lot of controversy about the importance of this subject. As an effort to fight against

obesity and other future health concerns, schools across Britain stress the importance of

participation in PE classes (Dent, 2016). I am a high school student myself, and have

heard peers debating if they should participate in this particular class. To acquire the most

accurate data, I surveyed highschool students in MUIDS asking them how much physical

activity they participate in each week. Surveys were sent out to my friends and classmates,

and all of the data gathered are collected on google forms where the students were

surveyed about their physical activity. The students were asked about how many hours of

physical activity they participate in each week and depending on their hours, they were

brought to a different section of the survey which inquired about their academics. The

mentioned aspects were questioned because it’s quite a straightforward idea, where I can

use the data I’ve collected to backup and provide a better understanding for any

researches done. The data of each section are represented by pie graphs which compare

all the data as a whole. In addition, I explored numerous researches from reliable sources

4
covering the topic of the positive effects of high school PE and have cited all information

which are used in this research paper.

Discussion

In this section, I’m going to discuss about my findings on the benefits of PE to high

school students and their social life. According to a study by (Godman, 2018) “The benefits

of exercise come directly from its ability to reduce insulin resistance and stimulate the

release of chemicals in the brain that affect the health of brain cells, the growth of new

blood vessels in the brain.” This study agrees to the data that I’ve gathered from my

survey (appendices A, B, C and D). According to the survey, 53.1% of students

participated in activities involving physical activity other than PE classes during school

time. Students who participated in more than 2 hours of physical activity each week were

59.2% more likely to achieve an A in their academics compared to students who

participated in less than 2 hours of physical activity in a week (appendices A, B, C).

Furthermore, if we also include B grades in our percentages then we will be able to see a

clearer impact of PE on the academics of students. 77% of high school students who

participated in at least 2 hours of physical activity each week achieved a B or higher in

their academics. This data indicates a big difference in the grades of students who exercise

regularly. If I happen to revisit this process again, I would also focus my research on the

benefits of PE to students social life because in this research report, I’ve only been able to

acquire information on the effects of PE on student’s academics. To conclude my findings

and discussion, data from the survey (appendices A - F) and other several reliable sources

suggest that high school students should take PE classes and exercise in their own time to

increase positive effects on the brain, which can help improve academics.

Conclusion

To conclude my research, exercising more than two hours a week improves the

health, and the growth of brain cells which in turn enhances brain activity. Therefore,

students who exercise more than two hours a week have a higher chance of achieving

5
high academic grades. Further research should be done to analyze different areas of the

effects of PE.
