Introduction

According to Borgen (2018), the total time that the average person in the United

States of America spends on social media is over 230,060 years. This illustrates that social

media has become an important part in human’s life, and it is growing rapidly. Presently,

many things have changed including the way of learning and communication. Nowadays,

adults and teenagers are using social media to interact with each other which is very

helpful to people, but there are some negative impacts with social media that people

should not overlook. In consequence, this research will demonstrate the effects of social

media on people’s behavior.

Methodology

The purpose of this research is to investigate and explore impacts of social media

by collecting the data from a survey and internet. Therefore, my role is to discover how

much time that each person spends on social media and examining the relationships

between the uses of social media and people’s behavior. The first method to collect data

was by using an electronic survey. According to Petersen (2019), a constant distraction of

social media contribute to shortened attention spans. I made the survey (appendix A)

using a google form because it was easy to make and collect data. It’s link was sent to

many people. In this report, this electronic survey was taken by people who were over 8

years old. Moreover, the information that I collected from the survey were the number of

hours that individual spent on social media each day, the impacts of social media that

affects people’s daily routine, and the people’s opinions on social media. The second

method was gathering the data from internet which could be in the form of graphs and

statistics. In this method, my aim is to collect the information about behaviors and

3
emotions of people resulted from using social media. (Appendix B), (appendix C),

(appendix D), and (appendix E) are the information or data that supports this research as

well as the articles and presentation that I found on the internet. This will help readers to

analyze the data visually because it shows range, percentages, maximum, and minimum

of the information clearly. Furthermore, readers can compare multiple continuous data

sets from graphs and statistics easily. These methods will help reinforce how social media

can impact people’s behavior in the following paragraphs.

Findings and discussion

In this section, I will discuss and analyse the data that I have collected from this

research process. As I have previously mentioned in the above section, I did a survey and

collected the data from internet by reading graphs, statistics, and articles about impacts

of social media on people’s behavior. In this research, I will refer to the samples from the

survey (appendix A) and the data from graphs (appendix B, C, D, and E). Therefore, I will

summaries the results that I have investigated. According to the results that I have

explored, social media can affect people’s behavior. The survey (appendix A) shown that

most of the people who use social media have problem with studying performance and

emotional control. Liggett, Ueberall, and Jackson (2016) stated that the unique features

of social media including, unlimited access, disjointed communication, and lack of eye

contact will lead to self-interest behavior, low impulse control, and low empathy which all

affects harmful behavior. This shows that social media can affect both physically and

mentally. However, the data from the graph (appendix D) demonstrate that social media

can reduce teenagers from feeling lonely and depressed. Moreover, cyberbullying is a

behavior that can be occurred from social media (appendix C) which can hurt people’s

feelings. This illustrate that negative behaviors can be occurred from social media. The

evidence from charts (appendix E) indicated that cyberbullying has affected certain

amount of people in the United States and Australia. According to Russell (2017), because

of the sites of social media that can be accessed freely, cyberbullying is easily to be seen.

If I have a chance to improve the research, I would increase the number of people that I

4
am going to survey because it will make the data more accurate. As a result, these data

conclude that social media can affect studying performance and emotional control, but it

can reduce some negative thinking. In addition, it can create bad behavior, such as

cyberbullying which can harm others.

Conclusion

In a final consideration, the aforementioned details demonstrate the impacts of

social media on people’s behavior. From what I have explored and analyzed, I can

conclude that there were evidence of both advantages and disadvantages of social

media. It affects people’s emotion and working abilities which can cause bullies. On the

other hand, it can reduce their stress from feeling depressed.
