Breast Cancer in African American Women

Did you know that breast cancer is found mostly in women of color? Breast cancer is more
common in African American women and white women, but it’s most likely to be found
in an African American women than anyone else. Black women should make an effort to
get monthly check-ups to prevent finding out that they have breast cancer after it’s
already too late and it starts spreading. That can give you the chance to find the cancer
before it spreads to other parts of the body. African American women diagnosed with
breast cancer usually find out that they have the cancer after it’s too late and they have
no choice but to get the breast removed. It’s up to them to actually do something because
in the end it’s them who face the consequences.

African American women should make the effort of getting checked up monthly so they
won’t run into problems such as the obvious which is finding they have breast cancer.
Women can go as much as their whole life before they find out that they have breast
cancer. “The crossover from higher to lower age-specific incidence rates in African
American women at age 45 cannot be explained by current data on the distribution of
risk factors.” (CDC) African American women have a better chance at getting breast
cancer at any age at any time than any other race or gender. “Tumors in African American
women are more likely to occur at a younger age,”. African American women can get
breast cancer at a young age; there should be a program everywhere which would have
women go monthly for check-ups so they find out when it’s too late to do something
about the tumor.

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer among women. You can get breast cancer just
from any everyday activity so it’s really hard for a woman to tell if she has it. Doctors don’t
always find the tumor in the breast before it’s too late to do something about it. There
are certain things a woman (or man) can do to prevent getting this form of cancer such
as starting healthy diets and just simply taking care of themselves. “Being overweight can
increase the risk of many different cancers, including breast cancer, especially after
menopause.”(Siteman Cancer Center) Not taking care of your body or watching
everything you eat can give you the opportunity to get this disease.

Breast cancer can affect women majorly and can stop them from doing everyday normal
activities. Having this cancer can drain you physically and mentally. Breast cancer leaves
long term symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, pain and numbness, dental issues, etc.
