Science 5

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:
A. name and describe some physical features of Venus
B. explain how greenhouse effect works on Venus
C. propose a solution on how we can avoid the excessive warming of the Earth

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic – Planet Venus
B. Materials – visual aids, pictures, textbook and other resource materials
C. Science Ideas
1. Venus is the second planet from the Sun.
2. It is often called “the twin sister of Earth” because of its almost similar size
and mass.
3. Venus is also the hottest planet due to the warming effect caused by its
atmospheric composition.
D. Valuing – Taking Care of the Earth

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Pupils’
A. Preparatory Activities
1. Prayer  (The pupils will stand and pray.)

2. Greeting
 “Good morning Grade 5!”
 “Good morning Teacher Elmo!”
3. Quarterly Routine Song/ Checking of
Attendance/ Health Inspection
 (The teacher will check their
attendance while the pupils are  (The health inspectors of the day will
singing.) check the nails of their linemates.)

All About That Space

I see the skies at night
(Tune: All About That Bass)
Burning the meteor down
We know there are comets
(Chorus) Come on, now make ‘em stop
Because you know An asteroid belt so vast
*I’m all about that space, Just raise them up
‘bout that space, eight planets ’Cause every planet is perfect from the
(repeat * 3x) bottom to the top.
I’m all about that space, (Refrain)
‘bout that space, space, space, space, Yea, my teacher, he told me,
space. “Don’t worry about the space,”
He said, “God created Solar System
Yea, it’s pretty clear for you and me.”
We have eight planets You know I want to come out and explore
But Pluto’s coming back the space
Like he’s supposed to do So if that’s what you’re into
‘Cause the big, yellow Sun is heating up Then go ’head and come along.
All the right sides and all the right places (repeat Chorus)

I’m bringing Pluto back
Go ‘head and tell them Science teachers, hey!
(But wait, there’s more!)
There are satellites
They’re known as moons
’Cause every planet is perfect from the bottom to the top.
(repeat Refrain and Chorus)

4. Review
 “Last time we have talked about which  “Mercury!”
planet?”
 “That is correct! Mercury is the first
planet from the Sun.”
 “Now, describe Mercury. What does it  “It looks like our moon. It is full of
look like?” craters and has no water.”
 “It is the smallest planet and it is the
second hottest planet in the Solar
System.”
 “Mercury has no moon and
atmosphere.”

 “Why doesn’t Mercury have a moon?  Because it is too close to the Sun that
Atmosphere?” its atmosphere evaporated. Its moon
would be sucked by the Sun because
of its great gravitational force.

B. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation
 “But before we travel to our next  “Yes, Teacher Elmo!”
destination, let me ask you this:
Have you ever seen a pair of twins?”

 “How did you know that they are  “They are very much look alike.”
twins?”  “Their height is the same.”
 “They are of both genders.”
 “They have similar mannerisms.”

 “Did you know that our planet has a

twin sister?”
 “Let me show you their pictures.”
 (The teacher will show pictures of
Venus and Earth.)
 “Now, compare the two planets.”  “Venus is yellow in color while Earth
has blue and green colors.”
 “They are almost the same in size and
shape.”
 “They are rocky worlds.”
 Earth has water while Venus has
none.

2. Discussion
 “Let see if your answers are correct.  (The pupils will listen to the presented
Let us now go to our next destination lesson by the teacher.)
which is the planet VENUS.”

Prepared by: Mr. Guillermo D. Sabio III Page 2 of 5

 (The teacher will introduce Venus and
will further explain the facts of the
planet.)
 Why do you think Venus is called the  Venus is called the morning star or
morning star or the evening star? evening star because they appear
very bright in the sky after the moon.

 (The teacher will now discuss the

outer features of the planet.)
 “Is the shape of Venus similar to that  “No, Teacher. Earth is an oblate
of Earth?” spheroid while Venus is almost
circular.”

 “Why do you think Venus has a  “Venus’ shape is circular due to the
circular shape and not like the Earth?” absence of a tidal force exerted by a
celestial object that should be orbiting
it.”

 “How about the rotation of Venus?  “It rotates clockwise or in a retrograde

How would you describe it?” manner. Unlike the other planets,
Venus’s rotation is from east to west.”

 “Now, let’s talk about the orbit. Again,  “Orbit is the imaginary path of a planet
what is an orbit?” around the Sun.”

 “Moving deeper into the planet, you’ll

see landforms like that on Earth.”
 (The teacher will continue discussing,
but this time, about the inner features
of the planet.)

 “What are landforms?”  “Landforms are bodies of land created

through natural process or by man.”
 “Give me examples of landforms?”  “mountain, volcano, hill, plateau,
island, continent, archipelago,
peninsula, etc.”

 “Why do you think Venus is hotter  “Venus is hotter than Mercury

than Mercury?” because of the thick atmosphere that
is mostly made of carbon dioxide
which traps the heat.”
 (The teacher will further explain how
greenhouse effect works and will
compare it to Earth.”
 “If volcanoes and solar winds are  “Smokes from factories”
responsible in making things worse on  “Burning fossil fuels like coal and
Venus, how about on Earth? What natural gas”
contributes to the excessive heating  “Emissions from vehicles”
on our planet?”  “Improper disposal of garbage”
 “Cutting off trees”
 “Using materials with CFCs”
 “Now, would you like our planet to
become like Venus?”  “No, teacher.”

 “Then, what should we do to prevent

that kind of event? Let us have our
activity.”
