Centripetal force

1.A rock tied to a string is traveling at a constant speed of 4 m / s in a circle of radius 1.5 m. Calculate the
magnitude of the centripetal acceleration of the rock.
ac = v2 / r ac = (4 m/ s)2 / (1.5 m) = (16 / 1.5) m2 / s2 m ac = 10.7 m/s
2. Sophia, whose mass is 52 kg, experienced a net force of 1800 N at the bottom of a roller coaster loop during
her school's physics field trip to the local amusement park. Determine Sophia's acceleration at this location.
3. An airplane accelerates down a runway at 3.20 m/s2 for 32.8 s until is finally lifts off the ground. Determine
the distance traveled before takeoff.
Given: Find:
d = 110 m t = 5.21 s vi = 0 m/s a = ??
d = vi*t + 0.5*a*t2
110 m = (0 m/s)*(5.21 s)+ 0.5*(a)*(5.21 s)2
110 m = (13.57 s2)*a
a = (110 m)/(13.57 s2)
a = 8.10 m/ s2
4. A race car accelerates uniformly from 18.5 m/s to 46.1 m/s in 2.47 seconds. Determine the acceleration of the
car and the distance traveled.
vi = 18.5 m/s vf = 46.1 m/s t = 2.47 s Find:
d = ??
a = ??
a = (Delta v)/t
a = (46.1 m/s - 18.5 m/s)/(2.47 s)
a = 11.2 m/s2
d = vi*t + 0.5*a*t2
d = (18.5 m/s)*(2.47 s)+ 0.5*(11.2 m/s2)*(2.47 s)2
d = 45.7 m + 34.1 m
d = 79.8 m
(Note: the d can also be calculated using the equation vf2 = vi2 + 2*a*d)

5. An object is moving along with a velocity of 17.84 m/s. What is its final velocity if it has a mass of 2.79 kg and
experiences a force of 5.93 N over a time period of 16.46 s?
6. A swimming pool of width 9.0 m and length 24.0 m is filled with water to a depth of 3.0 m. Calculate pressure on
the bottom of the pool due to the water.
∆ P = d h g ∆ P = (1000 kg / m3 ) (3.0 m) (9.8 m / s2 ) ∆ P = 29400 kg m2 / m3 s2
1. 6. A pipe contains an oil of specific gravity of 0.9. A differential manometer connected at
the two points A and B shows a difference in mercury lever of 15 cm.
