IEEE – Supporting Sustainable Development

IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.
Committed to sustainable development, IEEE utilizes its global network of forward-thinking technologists, scientists
and engineers to help drive breakthroughs that will improve lives, without compromising future generations.

IEEE HAC supports strengthening the capacity

and impact of IEEE volunteers involved in
sustainable development activities by
• Raising awareness of how technologists, scientists
and engineers can contribute
• Facilitating different levels of education and training
• Providing funding for projects and events across
the globe
• Supporting multi-stakeholder collaboration through
IEEE SIGHT
• Building strategic partnerships to better leverage
opportunities

IEEE SIGHT Program facilitates the co-design

and implementation of solutions addressing
local societal challenges through
• Collaboration between IEEE and non-IEEE
volunteers
• Partnerships with local communities and
stakeholder groups
• Adaptation and implementation of appropriate
technology
• Community capacity building to support local
sustainability

Projects and Events

IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee (HAC) supports strengthening the capacity and impact of IEEE volunteers, staff, and
organizational units involved in sustainable development and humanitarian technology-related activities around the world. To
achieve this objective, IEEE HAC facilitates appropriate education and training of volunteers with different levels of experience,
builds strategic partnerships to increase impact, supports IEEE Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT)
activities, and provides funding for relevant projects and events.

Project and Event Funding

IEEE HAC accepts proposals to support Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Technology related project activities and
events on a scheduled basis.

IEEE HAC Projects – Call for Proposals

The IEEE HAC Projects Committee will review proposals from experienced teams that (a) are based on consultation with target
communities and a clear understanding of the challenges they face (b) adopt a needs-driven approach to strengthening local
capacity through technology deployment. Proposals requesting funding between US$20,000 and $60,000 for activities over
12 months will be considered.

IEEE SIGHT Projects – Call for Proposals

Six IEEE members are required to form a SIGHT group but IEEE membership is not a requirement to belong to a SIGHT group.
In fact, groups are encouraged to seek out members from other disciplines and sectors.
IEEE HAC supports proposals from IEEE SIGHT groups taking a holistic, community-based approach to addressing local
societal challenges, taking account of relevant environmental, cultural, socio-economic & infrastructural issues and policy
priorities. Proposals must demonstrate a needs-driven approach to strengthening local capacity through technology deployment.
IEEE SIGHT Groups (sight.ieee.org) can submit proposals requesting funding between US$1,000 and $19,999 for activities
over 12 months.

IEEE HAC Event Funding – Call for Proposals

IEEE HAC accepts proposals to support sustainable development and humanitarian technology-oriented events (including
conferences, conference tracks and smaller scale workshops). Events that are focused on how technology supports the UN
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in an impactful way and bring key stakeholders together to share experiences and
strengthen capacity will be considered for funding.

IEEE HAC Conference Participation Program – Call for Applicants

IEEE HAC will provide a limited number of partial scholarships to support participation at 2019 conferences with a sustainable
development and humanitarian technology focus or component. The objective is to facilitate more extensive networking,
sharing of experiences and partnership building, and reduce potential economic barriers to participation by IEEE volunteers
active in the sustainable development space.
