TITLE:
“ FACTORS AFFECTING SLEEPING PATTERNS AND ITS EFFECT ON THE
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE STUDENTS”

THE PROBLEM
Sleeping is a natural repetitive state of rest for the mind and body which is essential to life.

Sleep is an exactly a time when your body and brain shut off. While you rest, your brain stays

busy, overseen a wide a variety of biological maintenance that keeps your body running in top

condition, preparing you for the day ahead. The sleep-wake pattern is driven by circadian timing

system, which is influenced by some factors such as physiological function, school and work

schedules, and many others. Most healthy adults need between seven and half to nine hours of

sleep per night to function at their best. Sleep serves several different functions such as growth and

repair, learning or memory consolidation, and restorative processes and all these occur throughout

the brain and the body. Cognitive functions related to academics such as memory consolidation,

learning, decision making and critical thinking are all related with adequate sleep. Sleep

deprivation and symptoms related to sleep disorders have not only been ignored but also

inadequately understood. Sleep loss is in fact one of the most striking problems of modern society,

and sleep deprivation is a common finding in students’ academic life. A study with a healthy

sample showed that sleepiness may have a substantial adverse influence on general health, and

quality of life. Sleep deprivation can be harmful to students. The sleep wake cycle is characterized

by insufficient sleep duration, delayed sleep onset, and occurrence of napping episodes during the

day. Studies have also demonstrated that insomnia might cause psychiatric disorders, psychosocial

stress, and dysfunction such as decrease work efficiency and learning disability. Sleep is clearly

an important aspect of successful, academic, and personal in the life of a student, yet very little

attention has been given to finding an appropriate sleeping pattern.

This study will aim to determine the factors that affects the sleep deprivation of Junior

High School student of Laboratory High School, Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur, and its effect to their

academic performance. The researchers want to find answers on different questions. First, the

researchers will have to determine the profile of the students in terms of their age, sex, grade level,

and number of siblings. Also, the researchers have to know the different activities or habits the

students do before they go to sleep, and their sleeping patterns. The researchers also need to

determine the level of performance of the students. After further verifications, the researchers will

correlate the significant relationship between the profile, sleeping patterns, habits before going to

sleep, and the effect of sleep deprivation to the academic performance of the students.
