As Nazi Germany was invading France in 1940

NO FACT OF CONTEMPORARY Western life is more evident than its growing

distrust of final truth and its implacable questioning of any sure word. The
prevalent mood, as Langdon Gilkey tells us, is “skeptical about all formulations of
ultimate coherence or ultimate meaning, speculative as well as theological” and
“doubts the possibility both of philosophical knowing and religious faith” (Naming
the Whirlwind, 1 p. 24). The “man from Missouri” long lampooned as a provincial
doubting Thomas has now found a well-nigh universal and sophisticated
counterpart. So widespread is the current truth-and-word crisis that, according to
some observers, the night of nihilism—a new Dark Ages—may be swiftly
engulfing the civilized world, and particularly the West which long has vaunted
itself as the spear point of cosmic progress.

INTRODOCTION WRITING

When you write, keep the following points in mind:

 Never begin to write until you fully understand the assignment.

 Ask question when you are in doubt

 Keep looking back at the title and the thesis stamen to be sure that you
are sticking to the topic.

 Always select a topic that is familiar to you when you have a choice. Ideas
will flow more freely, and it will take less time to write.

 Organize and regroup these ideas.

 Limit the number of ideas that you plan to develop.

 Make an outline, even a sketchy one, so that you have a plan from which
your ideas will flow smoothly.

 Spend time brainstorming to get enough ideas to complete the assignment

 Write down al the ideas that come to mind.

 Start with generalities and follow with supporting details.

 Choose words carefully. Incorrect word usage can lead to

misunderstanding, embarrassment, or a bad impression.

 Always keep a dictionary beside your desk to check on spelling, meaning,

word division into syllables, parts of speech, and idiomatic expressions.

It was Friday and I was looking forward to the weekend to relax. Despite some
gray clouds in the sky, I left my umbrella and raincoat at home. Because of a
sudden thunderstorm, there was a bad accident on the road, and I arrived late for
work. Consequently, my boss was very angry and disappointed because I was
not at the place where the meeting was to give my report at 8:30. When I put my
report in the copy machine, nothing happened, so I repeated the process again,
and as a result of a malfunction, it shredded my report instead of prim
