GENERAL SAFETY WARNINGS
PERSONAL SAFETY
■ Everyone is responsible for safety.
■ The installer/service personnel should be trained and authorized to complete the required work.
■ Ensure that the machine is safely isolated during installation and testing to protect all personnel.
■ Complete all required risk assessments and job safety analysis (JSA) before commencing work.
■ Observe all site specific and machine OEM procedures regarding the following:
– working at heights
– working in heat
– working in confined spaces
– all other site specific occupational health and safety (OH&S) procedures

MACHINE
■ Carry out all prestart operations as per site and machine OEM procedures.
■ Ensure the machine is safely isolated during installation and testing to protect the machine and other
equipment in the area.
■ Do not operate any machine with a known fault and report all findings to the supervisor in writing.
■ Test and operate machine as per machine OEM and site procedures.
■ Read and understand machine and site specific operational and testing instructions.

PRODUCT
Before applying power to the equipment, the user/repairer/ installer must read all product instructions. If in
doubt, seek assistance.

■ Ensure electrical connections are made as per RCT’s recommendations. Test circuits prior to connecting
power to any component.
■ The equipment contains no user serviceable parts inside. Return the unit to RCT for repairs.
■ Retain product and installation instructions for future use.
■ Ensure that RCT’s recommended service procedures are included in the machine’s service routine.
■ Observe all machine, site and RCT product warnings.
■ Follow all machine, site and RCT product operating procedures at all time.

The application of safety should not be limited to the above recommendations.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

®
The Muirhead Multi-Voltage Coolant Level Module, part number 1739, is designed to monitor engine
coolant levels on motor powered equipment to prevent premature engine failure. In the event of a blown
hose or cracked seal, most engine temperature gauges and protection systems will not detect loss of coolant
fluid.

The coolant level module eliminates these concerns by warning the operator that the coolant has reached a
dangerously low level. This warning allows the operator enough time to take preventative action before major
engine damage occurs.

FEATURES AND FUNCTIONS

 Multi-Voltage 12–24 V
 Audible and visual warnings
 Reduces costly engine repairs
 Extends service hours of equipment
 Extends engine and equipment component life
 Reduces operator responsibility
 Guards against engine failure
 Environmentally sealed – IP67

OPERATION AND USE
On detection of coolant loss (when the coolant level falls below the level of the sensor causing it to open
circuit), the blue wire switches the output to the purple wire, activating the individual warning indicator and
alarm (the indicator on the 1739 control unit will be illuminated when the correct coolant level is detected).

Once the coolant is replenished to the correct level the alarms will cease.

THE MANUFACTURER ADVISES THAT THE INPUT TO THE

COMMON CIRCUIT OF THE CHANGEOVER RELAY (BLUE
WIRE) MUST BE PROTECTED FROM CURRENT
OVERLOAD. THE RELAY IS RATED AT 10 AMPS
CONTINUOUS USE. WE SUGGEST UPON INSTALLATION
THAT AN INLINE 10 AMP (MAX) FUSE BE FITTED IN THE
RELAYS COMMON CONTACT CIRCUIT (BLUE WIRE).
PLEASE REFER TO THE SUGGESTED FITTING
INSTRUCTIONS DRAWING No. 121b.

WARRANTY WILL BE VOID

IF IT IS FOUND THAT A UNIT HAS FAILED DUE TO
CURRENT OVERLOAD, i.e. (CONTACTS DAMAGED OR
PCB TRACKS BLOWN) AND SUFFICIENT CIRCUIT
PROTECTION HAS NOT BEEN INSTALLED.

INSTALLATION GUIDE
1. Fit the control unit in a suitable location, preferably in the instrument panel area.

2. Refer to the wiring table below and the wiring diagram in this manual to connect the control unit. Ensure
the loom is in a protected area as possible and is away from moving machine parts.

1. The coolant level sensor should be installed in the top tank of the radiator as close to the top of the core
as possible, do not allow the tip of the probe to touch any metal. A suitable sealant should be used when
installing the sensor.

 The coolant level sensor is best located near the centre of the top of the tank to reduce the false
indication of coolant loss due to the tilting of the vehicle (when going around corners).
 The pictures below show examples of the location of the coolant level sensor installed in a VDJ and
HZJ LandCruiser.

VDJ HZJ

Notes:

 For the system to operate correctly, a conductive coolant must be used.

 If the top of the tank is of the shallow type, it is recommended that two coolant level sensors be installed;
one coolant level sensor on the far left of the top tank and the other on the far right of the top tank. Wire
sensors in parallel; this will reduce the false indication of coolant loss due to vehicle tilt.
 Always ensure that the radiator tank is earthed, do not allow the tip of the probe to touch the baffles in
the radiator. If installed into a plastic header tank, a second sensor may be required to provide a ground
circuit.
 For radiators with very thin walls, a light duty coolant level sensor is available.
 A hole should be tapped at the sensor location only if there is sufficient metal to produce enough
threads, if this is not possible then a bushing can be soldered into the top tank.
