the years until it is what it has become now, even today photography is still advancing. Let me
take you through photography history, Nicephore Niepce started this process called Heliography
invented in 1824. Heliography was used based off of light, natural sunlight, the sunlight is
reflected on a moveable mirror. For Niépce’s process he put the image obtained with bitumen
on a silver plate to be exposed for a few days. In 1832 they would put touches of lavender oil
distillation on the images which means it took the process an extra day. After this in 1833
Niépce died and his partner Daguerre invented the daguerreotype, which was the first process
A silver plate coated in silver iodide would be exposed in a camera obscura. Exposure time
was hardly 30 minutes. After a man named Hippolyte Bayard in 1839 discovered a way to
obtain positive images on paper. A sheet of paper covered with silver chloride was blackened by
light, then exposed to a camera obscura. Then the exposure time was 30 minutes to 2 hours.
To skip forward a couple years in 1888 Georges Eastman conducted the idea of a supple
base. Glass plates were replaced by celluloid rolls but photography was still missing color
reproduction. The first tries were in 1848 and 1851 but it was unstable. In 1896 Louis Hauron,
he made the first colorized photograph. For this process there were 3 filters red, yellow, and
blue. He obtained three positives that he dyed with the corresponding to each filter. Then he got
the restitution of the colors. The list of people goes on and on, the color process didn’t stop
there. It went on to Gabriel Lippman and R. Fisher. Which they got the process down and they
Composition sums up the regards of photography, the composition of a image is the way a
person puts their picture in frame to form the final image. You can alter the composition by
moving around, zooming in or zooming out, changing lenses, or changing your posture/position
think of. Here is a quick 5 tips for using composition: Movement Of The Eye, Rule Of Thirds,
Border Control, Leading Lines, Rule Of Odd Numbers, but here’s a bonus tip: Have Fun!
Some types of photographers that I think are pretty interesting are: Ansel Adams, Dorothea
Lange, Robert capa, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Steve McCurry, and Robert Frank. Let
me tell you about all of these amazing people. Ansel Adams was a American landscape
photographer and environmentalist known for his black and white images of the American west.
He lived until 1902-1984. Dorothea Lange was a American documentary photographer and
photojournalist. She was best known for her Depression era work for farm security
administration. She lived from 1895-1965. Robert Capa was a Hungarian war photographer and
photojournalist. He was considered by some of the best combat and adventure photographer in
history. He lived from 1913-1954. Richard Avedon was a American fashion photographer and
portrait photographer. The New York Times said that “ His fashion and portrait photographs
helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half century”. He lived
until 1923-2004. Annie Leibovitz is a American portrait photographer. Well known for her
engaging portraits, mostly of celebrities, which often feature people in intimate settings and
poses. She is still alive today, 69 years old, with children, and a amazing life. Steve McCurry is a
American photographer, he is a freelancer and photojournalist. His famous photo is the “Afghan
girl”, the girl with green eyes that sometimes appears on National Geographic. He is still alive
today. Lastly, Robert Frank, Robert Frank is a Swiss-American photographer and documentary
filmmaker. His most famous work is the book titled The American, about the outsiders view of
Photography has advanced since all of those people, today there is a way you can edit your
photos and it’s called photoshop. Photoshop is a digitally editing software, photoshop has
don’t delete or mess up any other layer. You can cut out objects, delete objects without starting
over, adjust images, flip them upside down, plus other features for adjusting people in photos.
Photoshop was created by American brothers Thomas and John Knoll who then sold it to
Adobe.
Photoshop has a lot of cool tools that helps unleash your creativity. Sometimes for the “best”
photoshop you can pay to get exclusive features and a lot more tools. While I’m talking about
features here’s some: they have brush management, brush stroke smoothing, lightroom photo
access, curvature pen tool, paint symmetry, group layering, quick share, and still much more!
Benefits of photoshop are you can apply any feature or effect you want and get consistent
results. A lot of people use this software to create a better quality image, because it has many
features that hardly are in any other photoshop. Also saying that photoshop can make you
create insane pictures and possibly make images look so realistic with non realistic features.
Most importantly though we are talking about the camera here so let me explain how the
camera is operated and what’s inside. The basic camera parts and functions are mostly, image
The minute you look through a viewfinder or press the shutter button that’s operating the
insides of your camera. The shutter button is what tells the camera how fast to open the shutter
to let that light in, it’s measured in seconds. Either your camera automatically does it for you or
Now that mirror inside of the camera reflects the light coming through the lens up to a prism
(meaning a lot of mirrors). And in the viewfinder so you can view what you took a picture of.
When you press the shutter button the mirror pops up, the shutter opens, and then the light hits
assure you.
Next, the F-stop is where you adjust the aperture, the aperture is the size of the shutter
opening. The F-stop and Shutter are the most important because that will obviously let you take
ISO control basically is it’s reading how accurate the exposure is.
This is the best way to describe the most important things to remember. Higher the ISO lower
the shutter speed, then smaller the opening the bigger aperture. You’ll get the hang of it!
Next, the Flash is a built in light for either darker spaces or for a area that you think needs more
light. The flash isn’t on all cameras though they can be manually put on your camera if you buy
the camera and the flash separately, the flash usually pops out the minute you slightly hold on
metal ring on the front of the camera will allow you to change the lens, the way you know that
the lens is fully on is hearing a “click” sound and you’re ready to go! Then when you want to pop
If your a beginner it can be difficult to first get started and understand how everything works.
Also finding the right supplies can be overwhelming with a lot of options. But I do have some
recommendations, Canon has a kit full of lenses, lens caps, SIM cards, battery grips, filters,
macros, a monopod, a tripod, and most importantly the camera. You can buy this at a
convenient store such as Walmart they sell this kit for 530 dollars. And yes I know it can be a bit
pricey but it’s totally worth it in the long run without buying separate pieces. But for your first
time I’d say start off with a point and shoot camera, a point and shoot camera is smaller than a
Canon. A point and shoot is basically done for you, when you take a picture it will come out
perfect and it’s very simple to operate. It does autofocus, automatic systems, automatic
exposure, and flash units built in. Then as you progressively get use to the point and shoot
Different Types Of Photography Colleges consist of: of course there are still many different
options but here’s some suggestions if you want to make this a career!
•Pratt Institute:
Pratt Institute is a private, nonsectarian, nonprofit, school for higher learning. Located in
Brooklyn.
•Antonelli College:
Antonelli College is for profit training, with the main campus in Cincinnati. Located in Cincinnati.
•Massachusetts College Of Art and Design: Students can explore photography as art with
personal vision and experimentation. You’d begin with black and white film with other schools
•Columbia College: This College is the most competitive and largest in the nation. You get over
200 working stations for photography, and dark rooms, along with dark rooms with over 150
enlarging stations.
•Yale School Of Fine Art: Highly selective MFA program only admits 9 students per year. They
critique a panel for a final review each term. This college focuses on the broad definition of
photography.
of students, instruction and critique from the real world. Students are encouraged to take
•Arizona State University: Arizona State University is considered one of the finest institutions in
the country. Also, the got ranked in the top 20 in the country.

All these colleges offer great opportunities and interviews so you can get a photography career.
And let allow you to be yourself and learn new experiences. They might be difficult at first but I
bet you’ll do amazing no matter what happens in this process. Plus I want to be a photographer
as you can tell, it’s a different experience and you wouldn’t be sitting around all the time, you’d
Now I talked about the DarkRoom a little bit and I’m going to give you some “keys” to working
into it. Many photographers have tried using photoshop and adobe and found out the process
very difficult, intimidating, and annoying. As a photographer you know what you want your
photos to look like, sometimes technology can be annoying and frustrating so people use a
dark room to be that “photoshop”. Experimenting without fear is probably the best to do with
photography and using a dark room, often photographers are scared to excitement but you can
possibly do anything you think of. Basically, if you don’t know by now what a dark room is, it’s a
pitch black room you can go into and take as many photos as you want and you wouldn’t have
never had used one personally but I’ve been in one and seen pictures that were taken in one.
The pictures are very crisp and kind of unreal looking. But some people recommend using film
photos because they are better to process and the generally look better.
I’d like to show you some pictures and explain what they are and what type of medium:
This is a portrait. Called The Smokey Stoke. About adults who smoke cigarettes.
But this is just a little example of what people can do. A little secret though: I think you can do
