Update from Your Chief Steward May 2019 - Issue #15

CID Chief Shop Steward Marinos Marinos

I am sure everyone has heard about the Retroactive Pay that was
distributed to most of our members for May 25, 2019. I am also sure Update from the Council Page 1
that a large majority of the CID Union Shop has a lot of unanswered

questions, such as:

1. How were the calculations made for the members who did Calendar of Events Page 3
receive retroactive pay?
2. How do I ensure my retroactive pay is correct?
3. If I file an appeal, when will it be determined?
4. If the Department owes me compensation when will I be
paid?

Unfortunately it appears that MPD and DC Government do not take

collective bargaining seriously, nor do they care about compensating
Union members appropriately. As I have stated in the past, our
retroactive pay should have been paid within 60 days per Article 46
of our collective bargaining agreement being settled, and the Union
should have been monitoring this issue the entire time, not a week
before the retroactive payments were to be distributed.

To answer your questions, I will have to rely on information provided

to me by the Chairman in the Executive Council meeting, MPD
teletypes, and an email sent by the Chairman. Please sign up to receive this regular

If a member’s seniority resets what does that
mean?
Seniority as defined in our contract is not a MPD
policy, but a negotiated benefit. If a member
voluntarily leaves the Bargaining Unit for any
reason, a member’s seniority will reset and the
day the member returns will be his/her new
seniority date. That means a member’s ability to
select days off, vacations, and special
assignments will be effected (This is particularly
important when dealing with details like July 4th).

Does leaving the Bargaining Unit affect

longevity and BRD?
The answer to this question depends on a
member’s circumstances. If a member leaves the
